Little Kingswood emerge as the Eastern Cape big guns

26 Mar 2023. Unbeaten Kingswood College, the little Co-ed private school from Makanda in hot property at the moment.

They are busy setting themselves up as one of the surprise packages of the season.

Perhaps too soon to dream big – there is a chance they could go through the entire season unbeaten?

The Kingswood match against St Andrew’s set to take place over the weekend was cancelled by St Andrew’s due to injuries in their camp.

James Winstanley – Kingswood head coach:

“I’m sure there is enormous disappointment for many that the 1st team fixture is off, particularly for the supporters and for the pupils of each school for whom this game matters a great deal.

However I also understand how much Andy Royle has invested in the tour to the USA and in the bigger picture, his players would be more disappointed to miss a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate meaningfully in that experience”

@Wyvern: @Ploegskaar: So sad that they had to change the wording in their official letter as well. Disrespectful on all accounts.

@R n P: Incredibly bad optics. Not playing is worse than losing, a loss lingers but fades, a cop-out clings for ages. Just my opinion

@The Beast: The reason is clear, no way of sugar coating it. My concern is what message are they sending to 2nd team boys? Injuries are part of any SBR season, doesn’t mean you can cherry pick your fixtures. Man, this is so weak

@Ploegskaar: hahahaha I suppose that was warranted. As a SAC supporter you would hope there is more to it. The fellows are struggling this year. Rumour mill aside, KC looking dangerous.

@Ploegskaar: I honestly fail to see the reason for pulling out of a fixture. If they are concerned about the players well-being surely they would not be playing in the Saints Festival before going on their US Tour? Why did they accept this fixture in the first place? Surely this is an opportunity to give the rest of their “Rugby Club” players an opportunity at playing for the First XV? Or is it simply the case of not wanting to lose against “Little Kingswood” despite having only lost about 5 games against Kingswood in the last 30 years at First XV level?

@R n P: Sounds like Wyvern hit a nerve and it enraged you. Surely you just play with the best team available?

@Wyvern: not sure about convenience. I heard they had some tough injuries and lots of niggles. If I remember correctly this was an added fixture created by covid. Surely it’s important that all the club teams play. The 1st XV teams will get their chance, when the old boys can bask in the glory of their bought product. And conjur up memories through a one eyed lens. So important to Bragg, celebrate and claim these ‘short term’ visitors as yours. Whinging aside should be a lekka season for the KC boys and their gifted group. #eggsinonebasket. #thinkingabouthudson.

@Wyvern: Apparently St Andrew’s have pulled out of the 1st XV match. All the other teams will still play.

The reason appears to be a number of injuries amongst the 1st XV players.
