Exciting news coming out of the Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria is that 16-year coaching experienced Sylvester Booysen takes over as Director of Rugby at at the start of 2023. He replaces Hendre Marnitz, who took up a key rugby post at Maritzburg College.
Booysen headed up the HTS Drostdy Donkeys from Worcester not too long ago but being an Eldoraigne Old Boy and having paid his dues as a coach on the Highveld, the former frontranker knows the Noordvaal rugby scene really well.
Booysen will be roped into the 1st XV coaching setup immediately, where he will take charge of the forwards.
In an interesting switch versatile head coach and Garsie alumni Johan du Plessis will now revert to working with the backs, a responsibility he has assumed in the past. And why not? During his playing days, this “rugbyman” played no.8 and wing – a bit Pierre Spies-esque. 2023 marks Du Plessis’ 10th season with the first team.
Between the two mentors they pack 44-years of rugby coaching.
Another well-known face at Rolina Street is that of 1st XV team manager Gustav Theunissen, who plays a key part in the Co-ed high school’s overall rugby player development via HP coaching.
@Arend: 5 plus jaar by Menlo gewees. Top aanstelling vir die Bere.
Wetter maar die man kan travel. Ek wonder of Garsies weer na vanjaar soveel aanstellings sal moet maak. Manne travel kwaai hier.
