Paul Roos backs on fire against Boland Landbou

There was a setback for detractors hoping to pin the “#HockeySchool” label on Paul Roos following decisions not to play at the Monnas Centenary Festival, Noord-Suid and Wildeklawer in 2021.

Instead Paul Roos added value to the theory that the key to a successful schoolboy rugby campaign is a hot backline. Some on-fire plays opened holes for finishing of a high standard as part of a 45-21 away win against Boland Landbou on the Farm outside Paarl.

Without taking anything away from the Maroon forwards who had to provide the stable bases from which they could launch devastating attacks, their backs were clinical and awesome. A combination of speed, handling and good understanding  turned the a good deal of the match into a nightmare for Boland Landbou defence.

Amongst the threats on the pitch was Lomwabo Mfikili. The muscular inside centre is a top academic and started his Paul Roos rugby career as a small under-14D player.

Having the equivalent of Boland Landbou’s pack in senior rugby would have been yielded good rewards. They were generally patient and good at ball protection, and able to make ground gains during these periods of retention. After going 28-0 down, their forwards rallied to help the next 40 or so minutes end 21-17 in the home team’s favour. When the Western Cape fields get wetter, they are bound to become more of a headache to opposition.

The eye-sore on Friday was the Boland Landbou backs. They seemed to crumble under the pressure with BIH (ball-in-hand). When questions were asked of them on 1v1 defence, they found it very difficult to read or respond quickly to the threats Paul Roos posed.

    @PRondersteuner: Yes the name that I immediately recognised as missing was that of Tristan van Dyk. I think he is the brother of that yster Philip van Dyk who played for PRG a few years ago.

    Daar is ‘n voorspeler wat moet terugkom van ‘n besering af. Dit gaan die pak baie beter gaan maak. Dan is daar 5 agterspelers ook wat nog moet terugkom. Waar hulle gaan plek kry, weet ek nie, maar die kompetisie vir plekke gaan kwaai wees. Dit voorspel net baie goeie dinge vir Bituas.
    Ek dink dit was PRG se suksesvolste dag nog op die Plaas!! Well done!!!

    @Strepie: Verseker. Covid en lock down het als meer perspektief gegee. Ek kry ouers en skoliere in die nuwe lewe baie jammer. Myself het lyne dof geloop langs die sportveld. Voordeel nou is dat ek alle sport kan volg vanaf die boksie en Boelie se gat kan krap.

    @PaarlBok: Goeie antwoord :)
    Hierdie bly tog net n skolesport en deel van die ontwikkeling van n skoolseun.
    Party skole vat dit n titseltjie te ver as dit by die euforie om te wen kom.
    Jarelange wenrekords en die absolute obsessie om te wen is regtig nou nie die alfa en omega nie.
