@McCulleys Workshop: Yes, I had a suspicion that they would do well this year as they have a very good spirit in that age group, which was strengthened by so many of last year’s grade 11s attending the rugby tour to Europe. Of course, they were also very strong as u16s in 2017 and had many grade 11s in last years 1st team, which was pretty decent.

However, what might make this a great season is their depth, as a lack of depth is often the achilles heal of small private schools. I say this because the 1st team easily beat SACS while missing the flyhalf and fullback, who were at the national schools T20 cricket championships. Also, the 2nd team has fairly comfortably beaten Nico Malan and Grey High’s 2nd teams and Clifton’s 1st team, thus far.

Interesting to see some of the comments around the referees. One should remember that these guys are almost never professionals, and are mostly trying their best to call a situation as they see it.

Just as players knock on, make poor judgement calls, miscalculate their timing on tackles, over-kick, miss tackles, over cook a pass etc.etc.etc. , remember the referee is also prone to error. Unfortunately a reffing error hurts a lot more if it is to my teams detriment.

Referees belong to societies and those societies will evaluate each referees performance (just as coaches look at players) and they will coach them.

There will always be a spectator who sees something a ref doesn’t. Just remember that while you are seeing the ref facing the crowd, there is a chap on the other side who is looking at the ref’s back. Likewise the ref cannot see a 360 view.

We should all be a little more tolerant – after all its just a game and if your kid can stand up from an unfair situation and learn that life is exactly the same – guess what – you will have a strong individual.

@Rainier: With a lot of the season left, it’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds. Kingswood have a good side and Dale came back well in the second half. From the little I’ve seen it seems that Grey, Selborne, SAC and Framesby are all in the running.

@PaarlBok: Dankie!

@boerboel: Asseblief tog! Outeniqua is ‘n trots en goeie skool. Waarvan Rugby ‘n klein deel is.

Moenie daaroor worry nie, hy sal jou gou genoeg inlig. Asof enige iemand buite die Paarl omgee in watter skool jy was.

@Knight: aaaaah so you not happy the ref missed a knock you & others saw! If a ref listened to every spectator in a match would he be objective? Outeniqua received plenty penalties. But did you see the Boishaai scrummy being taken out which became turnover ball & led to Outeniqua 2nd try? Which gave them momentum. Like I said last night had ref blew time when you suggested it should have been blown then Boishaai would have won 24-17. But you claiming cheating to help Boishaai. Perspective is required.

@linespeed: Agree, it was a great game to watch! It’s a pity we dont play against our brother schools on a more regular basis.

Kearsney definitely had a much more dominant tight 5, the loosies was even and our backline seemed to do more with less. Let’s see how it goes against Dale tomorrow…

@AntonT: @Rainier: That Kwagga u/14 group is very strong. They are going to be very competitive and with the depth it can only be good. The u/14 B team had a very good win, I think they were the only team that managed a win which is something they should be proud of. I see an u/16 boy left to play for Garsies, let’s just hope Outeniqua can keep all those u/14 boys?

I think these two u/14 groups are going to have good battles over the next few years.

Net n paar feite. Daar trek so 30 nuwe gesinne per maand George toe.

    @Knight:

I think you are very unfair on the Boishaai u/14 team. They played very well and to have lead by 24-5 at one stage was very impressive. To put that down to the ref is baffling to me. I know the refs at schoolboy level is not the greatest but to say that ref was blatantly cheating is a different thing. Maybe it will be better for you to go to the school and make your complaint there. I am sure they would like to know what he said to you. Especially that the ref did not know how long the game should be? How did he know when to stop the first half, never mind the second half? You can phone the sport office tomorrow so they can get this sorted out. Luckily the game was recorded so they will be able to look at it.

Just bare in mind that the ref missed many more things than what you mentioned on both sides. Even the Outeniqua linesman missed quite a few things in their 22.

    “Sometimes less is more!”

Welkom Gimnasium speel vanjaar by Wildeklawer teen onderskeidelik Waterkloof en Stellenberg.

I actually spoke to the ref about the time he did not even know how long a under 14 half should be. He also apoligised for ” not seeing ” the clear nock that everybody else saw before the 1st try .

Vir Stellies was Tarquinn Manuel (heelagter) deurentyd baie gevaarlik.

Nico Malan and Kearsney /16’s played yesterday to a 14-14 draw. Players from Kearsney that caught the eye was their 2, 7, 10, 11 and 15. Very entertaining match and a good result for the NM /16’s who was also unbeaten at the N-S tournament and played trails the previous day.

@beet: Let’s hope that the weather holds for tomorrow! It’s going to be a tough 3 games for KC, which was always going to test the depth. If there’re no injuries, i think we could be okay.

I think the matches are going to be on Digitv, so the boys need to rise to the occassion

Durbanville vs SACS. Mmmm! I wonder how many times Durbanville has beaten SACS in the past? Durbanville have a good team this year. Maybe they will make history on Saturday? Can anyone confirm what the head to head is?

The St John’s vs Jeppe game has the chance to be interesting if SJC can up their game. They have a big pack and decent enough ball skills but no real game breakers to compliment the effort. There’s a Grey PE centre nicknamed Slow Poison but the whole Jeppe team can be like that. I was so impressed by their composure against Selborne. It was almost unSouth African to see a team put together phases like that. They played with a great deal of maturity. On Saturday their little fullback will be at flyhalf. He looks like a real livewire. It will be good for spectators to see what the plan for him is in this role will be.

For the KZN teams. I think the Westville pack will get the upper-hand over DHS and that will pave the way for a reasonably comfortable home win. DHS really needs their backline to come good. They have a lot more experience in that department but it just hasn’t been functioning well.

Glenwood hasn’t lost to College since 2010, so the Law of Large Numbers is going to prove itself soon perhaps unexpectedly. On paper the College team looks decent and with Hlophe back they might have extra oomph as well. The big question might be how well can they defend against this high tempo Glenwood team. The Glenwood coach Derek has done a phenomenal job when it comes to creating scoring options and making his team a 5-point threat from anywhere on the park. When I watched their Wynberg matches even the frontrow forwards were able to make some sweet passes when it mattered. One was even their inspiration for their great start against KES. Uphill battle for MC for sure but if they can rely on their own go-to players they have the ability to make life difficult for the GM.

I suspect Hilton will have it relatively easy against St George’s at Kingswood and they should clock up a big number.

Kearsney against Kingswood promises to be very good contest. Kingswood had a good win against St John’s without really producing their best form. I suspect they will find the Kearsney defence more committed for the full match and Kearsney will have a couple more X-factor type threats. Kingswood based on their more varied game style are likely to be Kearsney’s biggest test this season and who knows the upped tempo and might ask a few more questions and also expose more weaknesses than the likes of Hilton, St Charles and even Pionier were able to do.

I expect Graeme to perform well on the scoreboard against Clifton.

It would be really nice to be at Kingswood as its their 125th plus a festival so more than one 1st XV in action but excluding them I was thinking where would I most like to be this weekend if I had that choice. I can think of 4 games that should be great:

Helpies vs Affies. I think this is going to be a cracker. Helpies have a good team this year and Affies tend to get more flak than they deserve every year are a good team this year as well. I was surprised to read on Affierugby.co.za just what a good head-to-head record Helpies has against Affies having won 20 matches in the past. I’m going to go with Helpies to sneak home here.

Monument vs Menlopark. This has the potential to be a thriller as well. A good Menlo team got beaten by two teams with insanely high tempo flaring attacks at Noord-Suid. It’s not that Monnas don’t pose a danger out wide but their style might be more to Menlo’s liking. There is bound to be a titanic battle up front as well. I’m sure both schools will be in it to win it come the business end of the VB Cup.

St Andrew’s vs Grey PE. Much anticipated after watching both schools in action at the recent Grey Fest in PE. SAC are one of those schools that are capable of playing the style of rugby that’s a pleasure to watch and they have some useful players this year. Grey had a bit of a mare with injuries last year but even still they are overdue for a good season now. They have a nicely balanced team. Personally I think they will have too much firepower for SAC even away in Gtown. Interesting the Grey fetcher who’s earned his share of praise for his pilfering ability is related to the Andy the SAC coach who’s done such a fine job ever since arriving there from KES.

Paarl BH vs Outeniqua. I’m sure I’ll look back at Boishaai’s game against Monnas as a highlight of this season. That was hectic battle and an incredible finish. The Kwaggas were very competitive at Noord-Suid but just couldn’t turn their efforts into wins. The way they played that first half against Affies proved just how dangerous they can be. Word is that Brug Straat is wet underfoot (again) this weekend. I expect that to favour Boishaai. Still it should prove to be one of the best contests of the weekend.

Glo Helpies staan goeie kans in paar wedstryde, maar Affies strukture by seniors altyd baie goed a.g.v. goeie afrigting.

As dit in George was sou ek gese het ons het ‘n baie groot kans…nou… my hart se Outeniqua , my kop HJS.

Waterkloof maak sy terugkeer in Virsekerbeker teen Transvalia. Met amper al die skole wat vereis het dat Hulle tuiswedstryde het, gaan dit n lang seisoen “ on the road” wees. Moet sê Transvalia lyk nie so sterk nie.
