Reghardt Botha, the lauded coach who left a bit of vacuum behind when he joined Menlopark (Pretoria)from Dr EG Jansen (Boksburg) in 2017, has been given relieved of his 1st XV coaching duties just a week and a bit into the 2018 regular season.
Botha’s recruitment was met with approval when the news broke. He’d been described as a forward thinker and therefore one who is always prepared to try new things with the aim of bettering his team through it.
With roughly ⅔ of Menlo’s current 23-player squad being under-17 still, indications seem strong that they are perhaps a season away from doing great things, however expectations for 2018 remain high in Pretoria’s eastern suburb.
The 45-5 preseason short version game defeat to Boland Landbou at Loftus was a hard pill to swallow. It was followed up by a less than unconvincing 32-29 victory over Rustenburg. However in the context of a bigger picture, these results were not good enough reason to panic or signal crisis mode.
But the pressure told and Botha was out before he really had a chance to prove himself.
Dean van der Walt has taken up the reins.
Menlo have now had five different head coaches since 2014.
Somehow they have to realise that stability and being able to implement longer term plans play a role in success as well.
