@Roger: a few years ago Helpies would have been classified as “Kindergarden” relative to others. People must really be less sensitive.

@beet: Point taken on terminology – meant to be an artistic approach to indicate relativeness and NOT specific to any school. Pity that obvious tongue in cheek comments are being vilified. Point remains that some players look like stars when playing against poor opposition and/or when play is very loose. Specifically players that have a very loose and unstructured approach but continuously stand out to put themselves in a better playing position. Play of some teams are actually built around specific players who then get all the opportunities and the hard workers get NO mention, although they actually play better rugby. During the really tough games the unstructured players many times come unstuck and cannot contribute. BUT also very important that structured players can adapt to different forms of play. So, apologies to those teams that feel they should not be referred to as “Kindergarden”.

@Roger: Howzit Roger, you holding onto your seat as we approach 70:1?

@Vleis: House gave Helpies some points two years ago at Saints! That being said we have Sacs and Saints looming large at the Saints festival. That will test the House metal, and then the annual derby later in the season against St John’s will be a great game to watch. House has dominated that derby for the last 5 or so years, but I noticed St John’s had the better of some of the age group games last year.

@McCulleys Workshop: hello MW – I was referring to the Lions set up – obviously nationally there are many deserving candidates. However, with this particular player what stands out is his leadership abilities – might be a factor.

@Vleis: I wasn’t sure who BB was referring to so chose to ignore but as you alluded to, people have very short memories. Helpmekaar have a great team this year and are obviously doing a lot right in their set up but it wasn’t too long ago that they were playing in the same league as Linden, Randburg, Voorentoe etc. Good on them and good for the Lions but remember – swings and roundabouts

@beet: Well said. I’m sure that BB would not enjoy people calling Helpies a Kindergarten school because they conceded over 50 points to a smallish soutie private school less than two years ago.

Also, the player in question from Saints already played in the Lions Craven Week team last year as a 17 year-old, so he’s certainly no flash in the pan.

@beet: In the House Wville game two weeks ago the Wville 10 stood out. The House defense was superb, the packs evenly matched, and yet this guy was their only player who frequently found space.

Great virtual reality app. Part of my problem with KZN CW selection has been exactly the point you describe, too many GW players, and while they may have dominated as a school side, an average player has been made to look good because of a few good players around him or a big pack. Come CW they are shown up.

@Roger: He’ll have some tough competition, Franke Horn comes to mind. Greenblood banked his lunch box on Richardson a dead cert for SA Schools this year at 7/8. Im not sure we’ve seen enough of this season yet.

@BrotherBear: Look the message you’re trying to convey isn’t lost on me but I do think the kindergarden term is uncalled for. There are a few select schools at the top who enjoy a measure of consistency over a longer period of time and somewhere below that are a host of schools that go through various stages and sizes of peaks and troughs over the same length of time, Helpmekaar being one of them. If you want to brand another school’s rugby team a kindergarden, make sure your school has been beating them or schools in their league comfortably for the last 10 or so years. :-D

From my experience barring the odd disgruntled 2nd XV parent, generally supporters/old boys/parents are proud of their schools, love celebrating the school’s achievements no matter how big or small and when kids from their schools perform well, a few like to let people know about it . The kids don’t pick their opponents and no good coach or mentor ever tells a kid not to reach for the stars or do his best.

Some of the pedigree kids are going to go all the way in rugby no matter how good or bad their team or the opponents they play against are. Occasionally these pedigree kids might come unstuck against a stronger team because their team is just not as strong or good as the opposition’s or because they had a bad game and this trait will recur throughout their very successful rugby careers and won’t be limited to just the time they spent playing SBR. Other pedigree kids are not going to go all the way – a small % of them may not even realise their SBR dreams while for others SBR will mark the ceiling of their achievements. And then there are going to be a few unknowns and/or relatively unknowns who surprise all and end up becoming the real deals.

It’s all part of a common sense reality that unfolds all the time for those who have been following SBR for a long time.

Sometimes it’s worth looking at a player in a match and asking yourself how would that player have performed in a stronger team and maybe other times we should be considering how a player would perform in a weaker team.

Over this last weekend I watched a school player who was receiving poor service and his opponents ruthlessly placed him under pressure all game long. He struggled and for many watching the verdict may have been that he’s not the right player for that possie yet I was sure that I saw things in his play that made me think he could succeed in his designated position if circumstances were different. His opponent produced what I think for me personally will be one of the best individual performances for a player in that position for the whole season. The opponent player is gifted, he was cool headed and had that rare ability to seemingly make time stand still around him so that he had extra seconds to decide what to do and do it really well but he also had some good platforms to work off and he didn’t ever have a defender in his face a nanosecond after receiving the ball. Maybe one day in the future we’ll have smartphone simulators that allow us to switch players around and see how they perform under different scenarios and then perhaps we will be able assess players competing for the same honours with true equality.

@beet: let’s see how these so called “wonder-kids”, with pedigrees surpassing the Queen, perform against some decent opposition. Easy to shine against the kindergarden. But then, consistent performance must be rewarded. Early days.
Absolutely amazing how normal kids can be elevated to Gods through self-fulfilling comments.

@BrotherBear: he was out most of the season last year with torn ligaments hence my comment “if he stays fit”. Those injuries have a nasty habit of reoccurring …..

I would love to see Snyman and Gordon in the same loose trio – dynamic!

@Roger: what a really strange comment. Why on earth would he not stay fit? Or do you mean able? Punters saying Mark Snyman to captain Lions, but Spilhouse has veto. No better loose trio combination in country at moment – Go Helpies. Let’s see if Jeppe can get any loose ball to run with tommorrow.

@Ringo: @Vleis: the Reds were in fine fettle on Saturday. Score at halftime was 11-0 but in the second half the passes started to stick and Boys High did well to keep the score to a reasonable level. This is a very good KES team – solid front row, great loose forwards, excellent fly half, pace to burn out wide and an inspirational captain. The line out does need work though …

The fly half unfortunately went off with concussion so he may miss the festival.

@coach: I guess I am clutching at any excuse I can find…. losing to a private school is not palatable….. I think maybe my comment was more along the lines of while the Jeppe boys are big they seem to have what for want of a better word what I would call water muscles no blame opined on anybody though maybe just me being clumsy with my words….. I am quietly optimistic about the team though must say, the pieces are there just need them to be more clinical in their execution which maybe the skills deficit that you are talking about….

I guess with time our young team should come together better….

@Vleis: Sure we can do that…. Maybe the Saturday game at KES fest if it suits you. But closer to the time we can arrange like you say. Cheers and goodluck to Saint Albans tomorrow early evenings in Hillbrow are extra chilly and that might make the game harder for them.

@Speartackle: Ek hoor Vrede het laas in 2009 verloor toe jy as 35 jarige in matriek was. As ek my somme doen is hulle 3324 dae onoorwonne. Hoekom het jy ons nie gesê nie? Jy altyd tog so beskeie.

@Ringo: I think KES at KES will be very difficult this year – especially now that St Alban’s are missing their big lock (vice-captain) and giant prop (120kg).

No problem to buy you beers, but we’ll have to set up an exact time closer to the fest, as I’ll be spending a lot of time at Saints because St Alban’s are playing there and my son wants to go there. That said, KES is very close to my home now, so will definitely pop in at some point.

@Vleis: Hi Bud I am counting down the days to my free beers at KES Fest from you. You may get lucky and offering free booze to a Jeppe old boy might not be a financially ruinous decision this year as I currently training for comrades so I am not in fine drinking shape as I have lessened my drinking.

SJC seemed well drilled on the weekend (the effects of excellent coaching) and I was also impressed by their conditioning. Size wise Jeppe matched them. The SJC boys seemed a bit harder. ( Although I fear badly for all our foes once the Spilhaus effect grips Jeppe rugby, mark my words the man is gunning for Affies next year)

I was not at the Saints Jeppe game as I was running Om die dam on that day… but caught about ten minutes of it on the live stream. Great initiative that is. But that tighthead from Saints looked like a man among boys. If it is indeed that they were missing starters when they pushed Jeppe to the brink of breaking. Then the battle of the cheeseboys on the 8th April may be a riveting affair.

St Albans are playing the school I will not name tomorrow. It will be interesting. I think that will be a nice indication of the strengths of both teams. That might be a good marker of were Gauteng English Boys’ rugby is laying.

I am just happy rugby season is back.

@Smallies: Objection your Honour. Calls for speculation. And it’s a bit disrespectful as well, not like GCB at all.

Both teams played on the same field in the same rain, which stopped at 1/2 time anyway. No matter, it’s the scoreboard that matters. And the 2nd team score would seem to indicate that the depth is not lacking either.

I’ve said my piece to other members of this blog in private, I think GCB are a really good team, smaak the #15, great player. They’ll do well.

@Ringo: A bit harsh to lay the blame on the S and C person Ringo. The last S and C person, who in fact was more the defense coach of the team, departed from Jeppe in August 2016 with the replacement person only arriving at the start of term one 2017. The team have been training since October 2016 under the watchful eyes of the 1st XV coaches. The conditioning phase is surely from Sept – January every season? The S and C person has nothing to do with skills training and this is where Jeppe were overshadowed on Saturday.

@Ringo: Hello Ringo. SJC have a very good coach and are looking very promising, as I predicted, but I wouldn’t rule out a loss at Saints in two weeks. The latter pushed Jeppe very close away from home and were missing a few players who were in their cricket team that won the national T20 championships on Sunday. Also, St Alban’s may fancy their chances.

@Riempies: Is the game on Wednesday… I saw on their fixture list the game was scheduled for Tuesday. Maybe Wednesday then it will be an interesting matchup. It should be an interesting game. But I fear that Helpmekaar will be heavy favourites as moral and confidence will be low after losing to a private school. But may be we bounce back with a big scalp.

    o/16 17-0
    o/15 33-15
    o/14 102-0

@Skywalker: NW won 2 rugby games ( the U16A 26-12 and the U15A 12-3). The 1st team hockey result was a bit one sided with Westville winning 5-1. NW did pick up the 2nds 1-0 and the U14A with a similar score.

@Ringo: It would be interesting to see how they go against Helpies on Wednesday. The Helpie motor have not fired on all cylinders yet. This is mostly due to not enough training together as a team.
I hope that we are in for some good rugby on Wednesday.

I watched SJC v Jeppe on the weekend not as fan by an impartial observer and very close to the action. Must say from the onset and again I stress that from a physical specimen perspective the SJC team looked menacing. I again lament the conditioning of our boys (Jeppe that is)…… I really think that we are solely missing the services of the strength and conditioning chap who moved to the UK. I think his replacement has not gotten into his stride and hence the boys are still a little soft. I love the expensive game and noticed that the whole school is playing one brand which bodes well for the future. There were moments were the tide seemed to swing Jeppe’s way and in fact we were 15 – 14 up with about 15 minutes left and had one more pass been made a simple jog in try would have been scored.

So I personally do not understand how one can deduce that the scoreline flatters one specific side.

SJC are full value for their win and it will be interesting to see how they go in the rest of their season.

They have already beaten Jeppe and Parktown ( other than their close neighbours the school I will not name who from the murmurs of their legions of followers are frighteningly good this year) I do not see any of the other English Joburg Boys’ schools getting close to SJC this year.

That UCT coach is a genius I must say.

But I like the direction that Jeppe rugby is going in and still quietly optimistic about the surprising a few people this season.

Although I fear tomorrows game against Helpmekaar might be a blood bath.

The season is going to be interesting none the less.

@Playa The scoreline flattered Jeppe I am afraid. I don’t think that they have the skills to play the type of game Spillhaus would like. KES (13% a Parktown side) seem strong to do that to PBHS. Parktown are strong too this year, so it should make for an interesting season.

Sport het baie vinnig agteruit gegaan by Jeugland.

Outeniqua (kwaggas)se uitslae: Eerstes 27 – 15 Brackenfell 0/14. 21 – 07 Boland landbou. 0/15. 40 – 14 Boland landbou 0/16. 27 – 15 Boland landbou.

It is not often that you find so many big games across the country on one day.
From Brackenfell vs Outiniqua to Tuks series and a couple of good strenght vs strenght match-ups in StJohns vs Jeppe.
Will be interesting to see how the first of Affies and Paarl Gim derby go down. After it was decided for a smaller group to go down and silence the Rom-rom-rom.
Good to Oos Moot vs Wonderboom again. Hope the sport will be the winner in the day and not the tempers
Good luck to all officials for the weekend, it can be expected when its these close yet tougher games, that the ref get thrown under bus or linesman the bumper of the bus  :-P

Some brilliant games in Tuks quarter finals for top 8. EG Jansen/ Kempton park neighbours and biggest competition in Falcons region. Menlopark/Garsfontein two Pretoria schools going to be exciting. HTS Middelburg/Monument going to be hard. Eldoraigne/ Nelspruit another tough one. No one can afford an ‘off’ day otherwise the underdogs will surprise. EG Jansen/Monument/ Garsfontein/Eldoraigne seems to be favourites
