@BOG: This reminds of the story where this oke threatening to jump from the Heerengracht building in Cape Town in the 1970’s. There was a huge commotion at the bottom with people in panic and ambulances and fire brigades all gathering at the scene. Up walks a shortish, stocky oke and says to the crowd not too worry, his name is Dawie Snyman and he’s the current Springbok fullback and he is used to fielding up-and-unders and they should let the guy jump and he’ll catch him. So the police and bystanders urged the guy to jump and so he jumped. To everybody’s amazement Snyman took a step back and the poor guy fell himself moer toe into the pavement. The crowd then asked Snyman why the hell did he not catch the oke to which he replied : ‘ I always let the ball bounce firtst’

@beet: Scotland may have shaded the BA’s in the posession stakes, but as the scoreboard shows, it’s about where you have that posession on the field and what you do with it. Bar the AB’s, and on their day the French, who can score from anywhere with the minimum amount of posession, the rest still need to play for territory and score from set-piece or phase play in the last third of the field.

@BOG: Agreed BOG, from what I have seen he was the best, but you need to qualify that it was during his era, when the game and the rules were different. Likewise FdP was the best of his era, under different rules and a more organized game. There can never be the best ever, as we cannot compare apples with apples, so just give credit where it is due and stop being so obstinate.

@Ploegskaar: @Andre T: Scotland shaded NZ in possession and forced the ABs to make more tackles by a considerable margin. We are going to have to improve our ball retention this weekend. Hopefully also a better understanding amongst our backs esp centres (de Jongh might play 12). Would also be nice if Rhule could start ahead of Hougaard.

I admit that SA has a lot of talented youngsters but obviously we would like to measure ourselves against the likes of NZ at premier level. Although they always have a very good junior squad their players seem to just improve so much better than ours once they enter the senior ranks. They are miles ahead when it comes to skills, speed, size and strength. We have size and strength but we lack badly in skills and speed. What is the origin of these shortcomings and how do we fix it? From this year’s JWC I honestly think Kitshoff will become a decent test player with Serfontein also in and out of Bok teams unless his skills are developed to become more of a distributor as well. I’m very excited about Jacques du Plessis’ future. This lad has everything to become a household name on the world stage. Apart from these 3 youngsters and to a lesser degree, Goosen, I don’t really see any players to unsettle the All Blacks in years to come.

For interest sake, who do you rate as a 9 then?

@Ploegskaar: FdP won the RWC? Dont think so, but it does remind me of the Joke I heard recently. The ABs felt down and unable to lift and motivate themselves for the last match against the Ozzies. So, Richie Mc Caw said to his team that they must go for a few drinks and that he will take on the Ozzies on his own. Five minutes into the match, they switch on the TV to see- NZ 7-0(Conversion Mc Caw) So, they carried om drinking.Ten minutes from the end one of the team suggested that they rush down to Eden Park to find out what is happening, only to discover that the match is drawn at 7 all(Australia leveled in the 79th minute) and Richie sitting in the cloak room with his face in his hands and crying. “Sorry chaps, I really let you and the country down”he said. So, they tried to console Richie by saying that he did exceptionally well.”But you chaps dont understand- I was red carded and sent off, ten minutes from the end. In your case, FdP just managed to stay on the field?

@Ploegskaar: Ditto. Some people are impressed with the ball skills exhibited by small kids in the townships, when doing tricks with a tennis ball. None of those “skills” are seen at international level. Likewise, some “rugby observers” are impressed by flash and misplaced aplomb. That is why some are impressed by Francois Hougaard, who is not an international player, in ANY position.

@BOG: On that we agree, hence the fact that FouriedP was such a brilliant player. Personally I would like to see Vermaak get an extended run in the 9 jumper, he passes better and breaks less than Pretorius and apart from the box kicks (which he can work on) does everything better than Rondehande Pienaar.

@BOG: As previously stated, the playing conditions in the NH suit Pienaar’s shortcomings. In dry conditions on hard fields, which calls for a faster game, he is a sloth, much like the Welsh 9 Phillips. Strauss was good though, although it was not very difficult to shine amongst so many poor performances.

After round of 83,80 and 79 I think I should quit golf as well. I’m much better at drinking, chasing women and talking sense. Golf is for those people who do not want to work. I still made more birdies than the Boks scored tries and I hit more fairways than they had possession. Overall we are both mediocre, difference is I know I can improve.

Crikey, how pathetic is our rugby. Playing a second string Ireland team and we scrape through by sheer luck. The winds and thunder storms in Mafikeng were more epic than the performance of this once proud rugby nation. We need a whole new team urgently with only perhaps Etsebeth and a fit Bismarck to remain. Adriaan Strauss played his best game ever but was still outplayed by his cousin. Our 9 should consider playing at 15 and let’s get real now that Porcelain Pat is a decent CC player but that’s where it stops. Juandre Kruger must quit the game immediately and JdV should give it one more week and then follow suit. Bunny Wailer at 15 should apply for a role in Prison Break 5 where he might experience the feeling of a line break. No really Superbroers this was a shitty performance and those wallies like BHP who still thinks we have talented players in this country must get a new hobby. Perhaps he should become a disc jockey at Radio Know Zero About Anything.

i thought Ruan played well… Lambie seemed to be trying to fit into the Blue Bulls type rugby in the 1st half and wasn’t working out. He had a good 2nd half though and I think the England game is where he should dominate. Vs Scotlan and Ireland Meyer will play the blou bulle rugby but in the england game they will surely play a more Sharks like game and hopefully Lambie dominates.
Hope he stays in the team though, it’ll be good for his confidence…

Disagree. Think some drastic changes are still going to occur. All you have to do is to look at each schools U14,U15,U16 A sides and you will see. MHS and Hilton don’t have much of a bright future,Northwood have a dream team at U15 but their other two sides are quite average so their U15s won’t have much depth when their in matric,DHS has a very good U14A side with an U14B side that only lost 2 or 3 times beating College and Westville, an U15 side that punched above their weight after losing 6 players and a very good U16 side which means we will have above average years before it gets real good as next years U14 is said to be better than what we had this year,Kearsney is up and down, Westville I think will be consistently good,College isn’t looking too good but I’m sure they’ll fix that up and Glenwood seems to be getting it right every year so I think they will be up there for years to come but everyone else looks like they will be on see-saws

@Horsie, since 2000 I think it’s played 17, Glenwood won 11, DHS 5 and one drawn. I don’t have my stats in front of me but will check and get back to you on the overall stats etc. I think DHS last won about 6 years ago. Yes, schools go through phases but with the semi professional approach it might not go through drastic changes anymore. Look DHS is close to me with family having gone there so I hate to see it doing badly. I support DHS against most other schools as it’s my second school, except against Glenwood for obvious reasons. The reason the rivalry is so intense is because the schools are very similar. Also, management change so current policy might change. Maher before Kershaw was focussed on other things…

@Horsie, I never said Glenwood would be up there I just said the stats will be different. At the rate Hilton, Michaelhouse and Westville are investing in their rugby Michaelhouse could be top in overall stats by 2062! I will get the head to head stats shortly. Beet, where I do a join this Superbru fantasy league thing?

@Horsie, correct DHS is 2nd to College for best results in KZN followed by Michaelhouse, Hilton and then Glenwood. It’s obvious as this really reflects the age of each school. The longer you around the more you will win over the younger schools. Give it 50 more years and the stats will look a little different.

    games played: 117

de Jong at 12? Oh yes, that chappie who scored a try this year! Mabuza against the FS? I could have sworn it was the BBs and what was the final result again? Alberts could be useful, but not as a rugby player. Maybe on building site and providing his mother is with him. Is Callie Visagie a netball player? Her throws, if I remember correctly, were very crooked. And Beet, as GT rightly points out, RP was one of the standout players in the NH. Remember, bad company corrupts good character(my grandmothers advice)

@Andre T: Injuries are part of the game, and were to be expected especially after all the SR-derbies, test matches and CC games this year. I believe HM and the provincial coaches will manage the players better in seasons to come, which will give us a bigger talent pool/squad in the near future. Let’s be honest, injuries to key players make a huge difference and even the AB’s have been wonky minus Carter, McCaw or Read over past seasons.

@Gungets Tuft: A few of our average scrummies have ended up in Europe and looked like gold. Michael Claassen and Rory Kockott come to mind so I’m not counting on that award to mean much especially at the higher test level. Scrumhalf has the ability to control the game from the base of breakdowns/scrums by making sound decisions but except for the home test vs Australia where Pienaar reverted to continuous quickball, he has shown precious little form in terms of exercising the best options available. I’m going to need to be surprised to see how conditions under foot makes his brain tick faster. Perhaps the thinking is he doesn’t have to – the conditions will forgive his slow reactions and missed opportunities. Then again on Sunday the All Blacks might show us what smart rugby and sharpness can produce.

@Andre T: No man, once the injured players return and Meyer gets the right mix of youth and experience over the next 4 years, we will develop a very competitive unit. We may have had a mediocre season at international level (due to various factors), but the performances of especially the Sharks and Stormers at CC and S-rugby level was very good. These teams with the Lions have already bought into the new type of game and will only get more adapt at it. Likewise HM will also get better, he is notoriously a slow starter because he believes in implementing systems first and reaping the rewards later.

As I said, I respect Fourie, but pretty sure that HM also has that size infatuation like the rest of the country, so he will probably never get a look-in.

On another subject, I do hope that they move Spies to the wing when he gets back, he can be the next Willem Stapelberg/Ray Mordt/Neil Burger.

@beet: Wasn’t Ruan voted Premiership Player of the Year this year. Means that he has probably proved himself on the NH wet and heavy fields. Perhaps his apparent inability to do anything so far for the Boks is that his #10 has been standing 25m behind the advantage line to give his 14 team-mates time to defend that channel …

@beet: The slownness of the fields and the game up North will suit Sloth Pienaar (that’s why he has done well for Ulster), so he will do ok. Likewise Steyn may have been a better pick as the conditions negate his shortcomings. A world class player does well in all conditions, and we don’t have many of those, but we do have guys that excell in different conditions, so maybe it’s about picking the right guys at the right time for now and for me that has been one of HM’s shortfalls to date.

@Andre T: I honestly think that Taute is so talented that he will become one of the best in whichever position he gets time to settle, but agreed, 15 is his best position at the moment.

Sarel is good, but minus a crisp pass, which in my opinion is now more important for a 9 in the modern game, as it’s mostly about phase play and picking the right runners.

I have a lot of respect for Fourie, but he would have been less effective up North and like Adriaan, maybe the step up will be too much. Visagie must have his eyes tested along with Burden, worst throwers in SA, so too much of a liability at the moment.

I really like Sarel Pretorius and Willie le Roux. 2 very attacking players with creative energy as well. Sarel just a liability on D where he tends to miss tackles. I have had enough of Pienaar’s brain dead play, inability to read the game, his slowness and also not being able to attack around the fringes. He really needs to prove himself on these wet fields. Hopefully this partnership with Lambie who isn’t a good long punter works out, with Pienaar having a big boot.

What about Taute on the wing for N/Hemiph games. Biggish strong runner like George North out wide could work out. Speed not such a big factor.

@Grasshopper: Bresler had to live in the shadows of other Sharks locks for two seasons but he has really stepped up to the plate this season and is now our Sharks no.1 choice. He is really competing with guys for the #5 jersey altho he can play #4. So its more like Bekker and Juandre Kruger are main rivals and Martin Muller can’t be ignored either. @Horsie, just out of interest how long was Bresler at DHS? Is he another BJ Botha story, played 11 years at another school went to DHS in his last year and is now a DHS Old Boy? To be fair any school would claim that, just like if Marne does well he will be a Glenwood Old Boy not a Waterkloof one. I agree Bresler is good but not really Bok standard yet. There are quite a few young locks better than him eg Etzebeth. I think with time he could become an enforcer type lock for the Boks, maybe bench…time will tell…

@Beet, I will go out and get the mag, is it available in Cape Town? Andre T, your circus antics indicate it’s something you could be capable of but if it was not you then I apologise. I bet it was the Glenwood staff trying to cheese me off

@Grasshopper: I’m too upset about you thinking that I took your identity to reply to Glenwood’s inability to produce good players. I’ll have to cool down first.

@Andre T, Glenwood have only had decent rugga sides every year since about 2005, hence the best are still to come through the ranks. Shaun Adendorff, Fred Zeilanga, Kyle Cooper, Fran Kleinhans and Warren Whiteley are probably our best hopes. We are ranked in the Top 20 schools for Boks produced with about 6 or 7…

Shame..I see T is Trolling for attention again..poor man cant get the inferiority complex issues out of the way. When those schools can catch up with the 17 odd Boks already produced then he can come and ask questions. There is one is the current Bok squad as well as another three in the CURRIECUP CHAMPS squad who could have been picked, but it is indicitive of the current coach to ignore WP players anyway!

I spend the highveld winters in Sheppies and the summers here. I’m usually very frank and ernest with women……in Sheppies I’m Frank and up here I’m Ernest

@beet: Only 8 out of all the bloggers here is really a poor show. Get with the program guys – join this Superbru pool. It has nothing to do with West Rand slang.

I think beet posted on a thread a while back (think it was on the Craven Week … can’t find it) .. on the topic about the number of recent Boks that have played Craven Week (then SA Schools) vs those that did not.

@beet: What is Superbru? Sounds like some kind of greeting slang from the West Rand. Take on BHP?……trying my utmost to avoid him.

Only 8 from a possible 23 players from franchise schools? Now I can clearly see why schools like Glenwood, Waterkloof and Paarl Boys have such huge budgets for rugby ‘development’. Must be very embarrassing for them to see minnows like Port Natal, Nelspruit, Monnas and Michaelhouse making up the numbers.

@Andre T: Last years number one? They have five(5) in the squad. Could/should have been higher, had it not been for injuries- Frans Steyn, Bismarck d P, Johan Goosen and Coenie Oosthuizen. I think you are confusing last year with this year.

Amazing to see only 7 of the squad played SA Schools. The competition must have been fierce. Why no representatives from last year’s number 1 in SA and 2 in Paarl? Does the budget stop after school?
