Carl Spilhaus, one of the better known coaches in schoolboy rugby circles will be the new Jeppe 1st XV coach starting in 2017.
Jeppe are considered KES’s main rivals. It’s believed that Spilhaus approached Jeppe. There was no attempt made by Jeppe to headhunt him. They are nonetheless thrilled to have him join.
“Carl is a very highly respected rugby coach in school circles, he is a hard task master and has a no-nonsense approach.” In fact he has already started the pre-season program with the 2017 Jeppe Squad.
School teacher Spilhaus coached the KES 1st XV from 2007 to 2016 and is the current Golden Lions Craven Week head coach.
Before joining KES, Spilhaus spent a short spell at Bedfordview’s St Benedict’s as their Director of Rugby beginning in 2006.
Before that he was at Dale in King Williams Town for all of 11 years, coaching at both the junior school and the college. Carl took charge of the Dale College 1st XV from 2002 to 2005 after an outstanding record as coach of the Dale Junior under-13As, who had been unbeaten for the last two years under him. He had coached primary school kids for five years and the Border under-13A’s for three.
Former KES deputy headboy Mzeke Nkosi, who was pacy wing in the Reds’ very successful 2009 team that amongst other great achievements beat Jeppe 65-10 that year, has been appointed as the new head coach at KES. In spite only being in his mid-20’s, Nkosi has made a remarkable rapid rise to the top and is already an SA Schools assistant coach as well as a Golden Lions Craven Week assistant coach.
@beet: Interesting….
@Wyvern: @Playa: From one source it sounded like Graeme are champions elect of GT in 2017. That’s why they have matched themselves against Selborne on GRD. If true K-Day will be about playing for silver.
@Wyvern: LOL!
Have you guys ever won 3 in a row?
@Playa: If Donald Trump can win the US elections, KC can win K-Day 3 years in a row
@Wyvern: K-Day 2017 will be an interesting affair
@Playa: Carl Bradfield. I can’t remember the years he played 1st XV but it was around the early 90’s. Kcman will be able to confirm…
@beet: I remember him from the ’99 St Andrews side (a game we were lucky to win ) – tough customer he was. Also saw a bit of him after school. I have only heard great things about his coaching career, and rugby knowledge.
@Wyvern: Who from KC has crossed over to College?
@beet: Haha yes!!! If i’m not wrong both coaches actually played in the same 1st XV together.
Another side note….thanks for all the work on the site, really good stuff!!!
@Wyvern: So you guys have one of their’s and I heard that they might have made one of yours as their new 1st XV coach. He’s already in the driving seat with regard’s to SAC cricket I think
@beet: Correct. He has deep roots at St Andrews which makes the appointment even more interesting
As a side note, he is the nephew of Nick Mallett (so dare i say firm rugby pedigree? )
@Playa: @Wyvern:
I couldn’t really find much on Jonny Mallett except this off the KC website. He must have a bit of a history at an EC school?

I am pleased to announce we have appointed Mr Jonathan Mallett as the
Director of Rugby. Johnny joins us from St David’s Marist, Inanda. He is currently Head of Rugby at St David’s as well as Director of Rugby at Wanderers Club in Johannesburg. Johnny is an accredited International Rugby Board Level 2 Coach and has coached at various schools in South Africa, as well as having stints at Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand and Epsom College in the UK. In his playing days he represented Eastern Province U21, Border U21,as well as having played in New Zealand, Italy, France and the UK. Johnny has had an extensive coaching and playing career and will no doubt add to the expertise at Kingswood College. We look forward to welcoming Johnny in January 2017 when he will take up his post.
@Wyvern: Jislike! You guys are not playing around hey. Great expertise you’re getting in Mallett.
@Playa: I think you are right, the u15 team was good but there are a few weaknesses that hopefully can be plugged once they reach open rugby. Historically, after a strong year we always have deep dip but maybe those days are over????? I think what may have changed now though, is that our coaching team across the age groups has really come a long way. With Johnny Mallett joining next year who knows maybe it will be a good next few years…..
@Wyvern: I’d take a whole 2 dozen of eggs on my face for a repeat of this year
I wouldn’t go that far back. Purely on the result against Dale, you should have a good 15A to have drawn against a decent Dale team. One of the better un15s we’ve had in recent years. I also noted that we lost to your 3rds – which amazed me. You guys should have a few stayers there. Or are you just being quietly optimistic?
@Playa: Haha i’m sure if the same is to be repeated this year you wouldn’t mind having that egg on your face again
I think we do have some good players coming through but only in patches. Our next good year is probably our current u13s who only lost one match this year.
@Wyvern: I am trying to steer away from predicting anything – got proper egg (I can’t say I minded though ) on my face for thinking we’d be whipping boys this year. Our 2nds and 3rds had a fair number of grade 11s and were both decent. The 16As still need some work, so it’s anyone’s guess how we’ll be next year.
You guys have some good groups coming through though I hear.
@Playa: How are you guys looking for next year? Tough for the boys to live up to this years fireworks
Useless bit of info for those who may not know; is that Spilhaus arrived at Dale from Selborne back in ’95. He is now crossing over to Jeppe from KES…he’s made a habit of “sleeping with the enemy”
@beet: I agree with your assessment. Such a setup will also ensure a lot more sharing of good practice as the province would want to keep a “good recipe” going. Many more coaches ( and selectors) will get development opportunities, ensuring better SBR players when they plow this back at their respective schools. Unfortunately it seems that the easy way out is the norm, where the tried and “trusted” are used over and over, until a real need for change is identified.
The big provinces normally have an abundance of talent and performance of these boys then “hide” management imperfections. Cannot speak for next year, as the only way one can gauge fairness happens after selection and through performance. Change also does not happen overnight. Let us see what happens.
Congrats Carl !!Weet jy gaan ‘n groot sukses maak van die lekker uitdaging by Jeppe.
@BrotherBear: @Roger: I can’t tell you how much it bugs me that there are not selection setups all around SA that specifically guard against the establishment of committees where any one school can control the outcomes or have an undue influence on who gets picked.
It should be built into each and every constitution that no one school can have a greater say than others.
@BrotherBear: how times have changed if KES and Jeppe have major influence at Lions schoolboy rugby and not Monnas, Helpies, Florida, Marais Viljoen etc
In my day the souties didn’t get a look in
Great opportunity for Mzeke – and he will have a very talented squad at his disposal for 2017. Lots of returning players and a strong U16 group coming through. Good luck.
Jeppe Kes in 2017 will be a massive clash
Hmm, believe both Carl and Mzeke will have big impact in their new roles. Nice challenge for Mzeke. Both schools have representatives with a lot of influence at Lions schoolboy rugby, with Jeppe now the leader. Carl and Reg involved in first team and CW. They also have the GK coach – vdRyst.
See Helpies playing Jeppe on 28 March in 2017 – will be a cracker and sure to provide some early Lions trial matchups.
I can see Jeppe rugby crowing even stronger in the future. Congratulations to Carl and Jeppe. Mzeke also a great replacement for him at KES.
