    Goeie wen vir Stellenberg oor Monnas vandag. As hierdie groep nie skielik ongelukkig raak by Stellenberg en dan toevallig by een van die wynland skole eindig nie, gaan Stellenberg vir ten minste die volgende twee jare weereens sterk 1ste spanne he. Lyk of daar egter harde werk op 0/14 vlak voorle.

    @Speartackle: Ja..Hulle gaan n Franse Akademie word. Al wat dit beteken is dat Grey spelers in Franse klubrugby kan gaan speel sonder dat hulle as n oorsese “kwota” spelers gereken word. Franse rugby het n bylaw wat stipuleer dat enige speler wat deel is van n Franse Akademie etc word nie as “buite” speler gereken nie. Dit gaan probleem skep vir hulle eie spelers, maar los lekker agterdeur oop vir Grey manne. PR en Saracens gaan dalk dieslfde paadjie loop en kan dalk deure oopmaak na Engelse premier liga.

    Between 1944 and 1994 we had 160 different schools producing 274 Boks. 26 Schools produced 3 or more boks totaling 107 Boks of the 275 in total. That is 39% coming out of 16% of the schools…

    Post Isolation we have 176 schools producing 324 Boks. 28 Schools producing 3 or more Boks totaling 148 of the 324 in total. That is 45% coming out of 16% of the schools.

    So the scenario in SA changed slightly in favour of more coming out of less schools but not much over the years. If you take Grey out of the equation we will probably have a better spread!

    @BoishaaiPa: Thanks for that analysis.

    I think we all agree with SpearT that talent is far more concentrated now than it was 20 years ago, so I find it fascinating that the Bok concentration percentage dropped in the post isolation era. I think it might have something to do with the fact that the earlier Bok teams were super-concentrated, so skew the overall statistics.

    @Speartackle: Your analysis of the situation made me curious..I went to look what % of Boks and All Blacks were produced by “rugby” schools in each country. I took all schools that produced at least 10 or more players. In both countries they had a total of 11 schools that produced more than 10 Boks or AB’s. The AB schools produced 278 players out of all 1157 All Blacks to date (24%). The SA schools produced 274 out of all 881 Boks to date (31%). There is some difference, but not a huge one as you would suggest that all our talent is pooled into specific schools, but it is the same scenario with the AB’s. Schools in question were
    NZ
    Auckland Grammer
    Christchurch Boys High
    Wellington College
    New Plymouth Boys’ High
    Southland Boys’ High
    Otago Boys’ High School
    Sacred Heart College
    Nelson College
    Timaru Boys’ High School
    Waitaki Boys
    Kelston Boys’ High

    SA
    Paul Roos
    Grey College
    Bishops
    SACS
    Paarl Gimnasium
    Paarl Boys High
    Kimberley Boys High
    Rondebosch Boys High
    Maritzburg College
    Grey High School
    St Andrew’s College

    I then looked only at Post Isolation era and only having detail data about SA, I took our top 10 schools producing Boks now and found that they actually contribute in total 27% of all Boks (90 out of 324) and if you take away Grey College (as they are not the norm) it comes down to a very low 18%. Thus we are very much in line in our schools scenario as NZ when it comes to producing top players. So our problem definitely lies beyond our schoolboy structures!

    @KES Oldboy: Our SBR is probably better than SBR in NZ and is far, far better than SBR in every other country. However, in the UK, SBR is not such a big deal – the top players are contracted to the academies of the premiership clubs. Therefore, you’re correct that they have much less depth than SA, as there are much fewer academies in the UK than there are top schools in SA…but…there are enough good players to form a strong England u18/20 team…and…said England players have been coached and conditioned by professionals whereas our boys have been coached and conditioned by semi-pros at schools.

    If SpearT doesn’t recognise that SA rugby is administered by self-serving, incompetent idiots and that our structure is a shambles, plus that our coaching after school ranges from mediocre to shocking (with the odd bright spark) then he has already started taking advantage of the legalisation of cannabis…big time.

    @Speartackle: By your logic, the #50 school oversees should thrash our #50, but I can assure you that you’re incorrect. Hilton (ranked 50) just won an international 7s tournament in the UK. Also, how do you explain the following:
    – last year, Monnas (a school with 600 boys) hammered Munster u18 (a province with many thousands of boys) by 50 points in Munster;
    – two years ago, Grey PE hammered the London Irish Academy in England;
    – the schools that tour SA mostly get klapped by all our schools ranked in the top 100.

    Your other comment contradicts itself. You say that a SA boy receives too much praise because he breaks the line against poor players, or poorly coached players…but then you say that the talent (both players and coaching) is much more concentrated in SA, which would make it much more difficult to break the line here than overseas where the talent is spread out??

    @KES Oldboy: We have a culture where rugby players go to rugby schools……Talent is cropped in say 50 schools where in other countries it is spread out between 150 schools…….that is why our number 30 school will beat another country’s number 10

    And you won’t convince me otherwise specially with all the poaching of players, bursaries and all the things SA schools do to ensure they have a winning rugby team. And then a player breaks the line because of poor defending and everybody cries out The next big thing…….our problem is at entry level and lower age group level where coaching is useless…….it is all about winning rugby and no skills, technique …….stop blaming the administrators and coaches at u/20 level

    @Vleis: I agree with you Vleis. Our school rugby had incredible depth & quality. Other countries have narrowed the gap at U20 level and even U18 level. But from a depth perspective I don’t think there are many to touch us. Our 30th ranked teams would compete against other country’s top 10. Or am I being over optimistic?

    I watched snippets of the Boland Landbou vs Affies match. What a ding dong battle. The finish was almost as good as the Noord-Suid Klofies vs Stellies match.

    Also saw most of Grey vs Gimmies. Grey just too strong again (I watched them vs M/College as well). The wing Jonah loMuller is a handful. He’s 99kg. 8-O . Great to see that he also packs a few footballing skills which helped get me a try. GCB u16 seems like a bit of a VIP parents team with sons of Braam v Straaten, Andre Venter and Ian S-S plus I think Joe Beukes’s boy who didn’t play vs Gim.

    The fullback’s name is Riaan Britz – is he perhaps related to the Britz brothers of whom Gerrie was probably the most well-known after school?

    Baie trots op ons 0/14 spannetjie. Hierdie groepie seuns is harde werkers, daar is nie noodwendig ‘uitstaande’ spelers in die groep nie. Wat vir my mooi is, is dat die seuns vir mekaar speel en vir die skool se trui speel.

    Ons o/16 groep val uitmekaar uit. Dis jammer om dit te sê en dis jammer/hartseer om te sien. Dis ons senior groep vir die volgende twee jaar en dit maak my redelik bekommerd. Waar is die ‘Nellie-guts’ seuns? Reeds bepaal as 13de in die Tuksreeks en die houe wat hulle vat duur steeds voort, daar is geen ingryping nie. Ons ouers staan steeds agter julle maar verandering begin by jouself voor jy na niemand anders sal luister.
