South African schoolboy rugby has been blessed with two memorable season finales in 2024 and 2025. In both years, the final big interschool derby fixture on the calendar effectively served as an unofficial national championship decider.
In 2024, Paul Roos produced a performance for the ages, dismantling Grey College 36-3 to complete an unbeaten season and secure the national crown for the first time in two decades.
A year later, the biggest fixture in schoolboy rugby once again delivered. Paarl Interskole lived up to its billing as Paarl Boys’ High staged a dramatic comeback to edge Paarl Gymnasium 35-33 in a classic encounter, capping a magnificent season and ending the year as the country’s top-ranked team.
The prospect of another season-ending grand finale is not on the cards in 2026. Instead, the destination of the national title is likely but not definitely set to be decided on the Jan Kriel Field on 6 June, when two of the game’s heavyweights collide in a match of enormous significance.
Before the season began, Paarl Gim was widely regarded as favourites to claim the honours. Despite stumbling against Stellenberg on the opening match day of their campaign, they have responded emphatically, producing a string of commanding performances built on exceptional teamwork, precision and execution. Such has been their form that even a team of Paul Roos’ quality enters this defining encounter as a clear underdog.
That should not be mistaken for any weakness on the part of the Stellenbosch side. Paul Roos has enjoyed an outstanding season of their own, with their only defeat also coming against Stellenberg. They remain one of the most complete teams in the country, excelling in numerous facets of the game. However, Saturday will present their sternest examination yet.
If the Maroons are to pull off a major upset, they will need to produce their finest performance of the season. Anything less is unlikely to be enough against a Paarl Gim side operating at an exceptionally high level.
Perhaps the most intriguing subplot heading into the derby is the curious irrelevance of home-ground advantage in recent years. It is one of the few rivalries in SA schoolboy rugby where playing at home has counted for remarkably little.
The last time Paarl Gim defeated Paul Roos on the Jan Kriel Field was in 2021. Since then, neither side has managed to win at home. Translated it means Paul Roos has emerged victorious in their last two visits to Paarl, a statistic that may provide the Stellenbosch faithful with a glimmer of hope ahead of one of the biggest matches of the 2026 season.
