@Ringo: lol, I think this Jeppe team is a totally different prospect from 8 or 9 years ago…..so now is time for revenge for you guys!
I watched them at kES…..very impressive.

Hopefully the Ben Vorster boys will be able to compete, but it is exactly that extra space at Ellispark that worries me a little….given that speed freaks in your team.

I am also trying to make plans to attend….afterwards I can even watch the minor matter of a Stormers/lions clash…should also be fun!

In the end, it is a great opportunity for both teams to play in a world famous stadium……as long as they enjoy it and do their best i will be happy!

@Vyfster: Heard the sane thing …. my brother was telling me when they played Ben Vorster Trevor Henyekani was in the Vories team he says it was terrifying experience for them…… Hopefully meeting Hychiava on the 16th will not be an equally terrifying encourter for the boys from Tzaneen. However both teams have good backlines soo the space at the Park offers will make for a great game I will definitely go see this game

@Ringo: just heard some exciting news….Ben Vorster and Jeppe Boys will play each other on 16 April on Ellispark as main curtain raiser for the Stormers/Lions Super rugby fixture.

That should be wonderful for the boys!

Ben Vorster played earlier this year on Loftus against Potch Gimmies during the Blue Bulls rugby day…..not often a schoolboy can play on both Loftus and Ellispark for his school in one year.

@Krugersdorp Witbul: Stem 100%. Baie jare, baie teleurgestel.

Gladnie ‘n senter in my opinie.

Louis Botes was Monnas kaptein in 1977. Toffie was hoofseun.

Ek kan seker 20 sulke skole as voorbeelde noem.

Hierdie jaar is Helpmekaar se beste span in jare.

Ek self was in Monnas en my pa in Riebeeck.

So ja, as jy in Riebeeck of Jan Viljoen was, was jou kanse nie goed om CW te speel terwyl Monnas so sterk was nie.

So a memorable history of games against Massyn. Those rivalries are quite interesting.

A couple of years ago I was chatting to JP Jamieson a hooker who is coming up thru the levels at EP and closing in on Super Rugby selection. Well after mentioning Andrew Du Plessis, a hooker who was last year’s Sharks u21 player of the season, JP said he knows him well because they had been playing against each other since u9. JP had been at Grey in PE since he started school while Andrew was at Grey Bloem junior to high school student. Every year the whole of two Greys from u9 to u19 plays interschools against each other

@beet: Re Jano. I’ll never forget, when he was u/15 he played flank for HTSM and kicked for poles in the final against Monnas. He had a final kick to win the game, in front of poles, and missed it after a charge down. Poor guy was devastated. The same Massyn played for Monnas as 8 in that game….

I know this is a bit off topic but talking about Lions players last year I watched the Lions u21 playing the Sharks and the former HTSM no.8 Jano Venter, who some might remember better for exchanging proper punches with Chris Massyn during an u19 CC final a few years back, has such a good game. The Lions have done will to secure a big of depth but based on that performance I was surprised to see a younger player Ruan Ackerman leapfrog him. An obvious answer is well “the coach’s son” or perhaps Jano being a no.8 as opposed to a 7, but would like to know how he’s progressing this season.

@Ringo: I can see you are clearly a FAN and not only of SBR. Try and look a bit deeper than “gazelle bouncing” and you will see there are critical complexities and situations that are unlocked by certain players who do not “leap like gazelle’s” or just storm into every situations do to bash through everybody (your 2nd “best” option). Helpmekaar performs well because their critical fronts and backs are thinkers and performers.
I agree, Jeppe 8 is a beautiful runner and your backline one of the most dangerous I have seen this year.

@BrotherBear: Like I said in my earlier posts only saw the last two games of the day so I cannot comment on what went on earlier. In my opinion and I stress it my opinion the Jeppe 8th man was by far the best 8th man in the two games I saw followed by the monnas 8th man. Agree with all your other comments did not see Helpies number 8 as he was too busy been shown off by his other loose forwards who were exceptional by the way. In terms of tries by 8th man you must have missed that kick off return try by the Jeppe 8 leaped in the air like a gazelle bounced off Three defenders and ran around the final defender to show off his versatility. But I digress I am not selector just fan of SBR

Helpies 15 can become very good only if he stops staring at the crowd all the time.

@Roger: Last night’s match between Helpmekaar and KES cannot be seen as a close encounter. SEVEN tries to none is a better reflection of true strength and ability.
@Hooit, @Ringo: best no 8 on field last night was from Helpmekaar. Reading the game, workrate and link between fronts and backs exceptional. He also scored a try. Jeppe 8 is fast but that is all. Best 6 also from Helpmekaar – scored 2 tries and monster on loose ball. Best scrummy also Helpmekaar. Distribution and options brilliant. Only Monnas players that stood out was lock and no6. Jeppe 13 in class of his own. Reading the game, power running and distribution excellent. Helpmekaar fullback extremely dangerous on attack, good under high ball and solid on defense. St Johns 8th man also very busy and had a very good game.

@Ringo: Agree. My Monnas comments only applicable to the Jeppe game. Helpmekaar 6 is in a league of his own. GW 6 belongs to him and a very good change for SA Schools.

@Hooit: Did not see Bennies play so can’t comment on their play…. thought the monnas forwards all of them were stellar…. Just think the Helpmekaar flanks were better in their game especially the 6 wow the lungs on that young man really commendable

@Ringo: My opinion: The Monnas 6 was the best of the Monnas team. Unfortunately his size is counting against him. Monnas 7 also had a good physical game along with SA schools lock Ruan Vermaak. Jeppe 8 is good. The whole Jeppe backline impressed. Together with Helpmekaar they should make up the bulk of the Lions backline at this stage. Obviously various forwards in the Helpmekaar pack is impressive. St Benedicts 13 was also very good.

@Tang: and @Orbit: Thank you very much Orbit think I would have answered these questions poorly….. I went to Alberton rugby club today and caught the last two trial games I know they are anot official but Jeppe won 3 tries to two against monnas and I actually think we would have won a full game against Monnas …… in the Kes Helpies encourter 7 tries scored by Helpies unanswered by Kes…… Must say a pity the Jeppe 8th man is u19 cause he scored an unbelievable try catching a kick bouncing three players off and then running around the Monnas final defender a man between the boys….. must say love the Jeppe backline but was also was mighty impressed by the Helpies backline had brilliant line speed and their number 6 flanker was a workaholic and topped it off with two tries of his own…. I am no selector but Jeppe whole backline, hooker, lock and 8th man “pity too old”; monnas tight five, 8th man, right wing and flyhalf; and from helpies flankers, scrumhalf, flyhalf, 15 and both wingers

@Tang: I can reply to this. The money was is to cover things like pre match meals, tog bags, strapping, services of a physio on match day, to cover a large amount of players fees at festival and travel cost to fly to cape town for the big festival as well as the trip to Northwood. This costs a lot and the team has tried to not ask the school for the money and try raise it themselves. The team has been involved by helping at fund raisors.

No money will be used for players. As for that the Jeppe 8 arrived in Grade 9. The only other new addition from Grade 8 is a boy who arrived in Grade 10 , a left wing.

@Vleis: captain is number 13 – Monakali – the chap from SACS who caused such a big furore in 2014. He came to KES as a number eight in grade 10, played wing in grade 11 and is now playing outside centre. 1.85 and 95 kilograms – big, strong and fast and very good.

    vice captain – not sure

@Ringo: A few questions for you:

    1) A mate of mine (a Jeppe Old Boy) claims that Jeppe were looking for R150,000 in sponsorship money for the first team this year. Is this true? If it is true, is this professionalism? How can a first side seek such a large amount of sponsorship money?

    2) Apparently Jeppe have added a number of players who did not start at Jeppe in grade 8. I hear the number 10, a kid who played for the Pumas at GK last year and the current 8th man are all late additions to Jeppe. I thought Jeppe were only acquiring at grade 8 (through the scholarship programme). Is the information correct?

@BrotherBear: scoreboard flattered Helpies a touch – was 33-29 with 5 minutes to go and Helpies scored a breakaway try and another after the hooter. They were deserved winners though – very good team. Number 6 is brilliant – reminds me of Kwagga Smith

@Brotherbear….thx for that. I dont want to make reference to a particular player as such merely using it as example due to everyones knowledge that this senter pairing use to be forwards.
As you know the life after Grade 12 is certainly when any potential career starts. However the grade of measuring players immediately with tertiary institutions is having played cravenweek. Bursaries etc. So i would say it already starts with school to certain extent, but also not the end of the world if you dont make it to provincial at school. Like we have seen in past experience with alot of talent being overlooked.

@knowthegame…There is a good chance the talent is already with a strong school in the area for a particular sport. Specially if the draughting was done properly, as well as schools with hostels can so easily accomodate. One cannot critisize if you dont have full dinamics. A school like you made reference to has already got a “semi-regional” team, because of the talent draughted.
People drive past schools to get to the school of there choice. So obviously they will have a better representation in regional teams with all the talent. In the past afrikaans schools made it up to last 60 candidates, then only the private en english schools joined. Got no idea how they do it now.

Eintlik beteken hierdie proewe n ronde nul.

@Skopgraaf: Difficult call on the midfield backline players vs. loosies. Problem is that during the open age groups the competition is quite fierce and specialisation starts playing a big role. Due to the pace, you tend to rely heavily on instinct – so what style are you used. To change from one position to another and be really good from the start is not that easy and mastered by very few. You need a few games to settle in. I rated both Monnas centres as good loosies. They can be very good in the midfield, but need to have a mindshift. Career sport decisions at school level may be a bit early and of recent forced by competition to be drafted by one of the provincial sides post matric. Although I love SBR, the real competition only starts after school. Each player has a different setup strategy. It is absolutely NB to have such a strategy as well as a plan B and C as well.

I am sure the Lions union will somehow look after the u19 player. Yes – good option to draft him into the u19 trials. He also has the opportunity to play in the PUK week.

@Brotherbear…yes the Jeppe Monnas encounter will be goos one. Years ago it use to be a annual weekday fixture. re the Monnas senters. What is your take playing a guy out of position for best interest of the team, and maybe depriving him of colours in a position he might have had a career with?…

With regards to the Jeppe eightman, could the union not draught him into the u19 trials to keep him in the mix, or risk loosing him from maybe going to another union next year.

@Skopgraaf: Correct, Helpies beat KES by a healthy margin on Saturday. The game was not in the original calendar and is part of the initiative to showcase local schools before S18 matches.
Must say, KES came out with guns blazing. Helpies was a bit lacklustre due to writing exams each day of the week and not wanting to incur injuries before today. KES not a team to be underestimated though.
To answer your question/comment more directly: I think all the selectors could not attend the Saturday game and they probably want an even playing field for all teams. Monnas vs. Jeppe will be an interesting affair, although not an “official” game. I understand that the “star” eightman of Jeppe is u19 this year and will not be available for Craven week (u18). Some people have punted him as a future Sprinbok wing.
