IPT 2012 : DRSU Youth Club teams in action

The DRSU teams departed on Sunday to compete in the Youth Club Rugby Inter Provincial Tournament in Kempton Park. 110 boys making up the five 22 strong squads in the U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 age groups plus their medical, coaching and management teams will spend the week participating in the IPT hosted by the Valke at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park. The full compliment of DRSU teams will take on the hosts in tomorrows opening round of matches in the main stadium followed by the Bulle on Tuesday. Wednesday will see the boys spending their rest day at Gold Reef City before taking on a Valke Invitation team on Thursday. The finals will be decided by the results from these 3 rounds and will see the boys compete either in 3rd/4th or 5th/6th playoffs on Friday or the 1st/2nd finals on Saturday. The full set of fixtures can be viewed on the DRSU website: http://www.drsujuniorrugby.co.za/Documents/IPT/IPT%202012%20FIXTURES.pdf

Good luck to all the boys participating – some quality rugby will no doubt be on offer.

@BWS: I think it was Nicholson who played 13 in the U13 team … van Rensburg and this year’s 15 were both on the wings with Kirkham at full back – amazing young backline. Add Staples and Dixon to the mix at #8 and #10 and you start realising why that team was unbeaten (Gold):)

Ruan had quite a good season but picked up a knee (I think) injury against Hilton which took a while to heal. Ruan thrives in competition, manages to keep his cool and seems to enjoy pressure.

@Griffon: Van Rensburg had an excellent year at 0/15A level at Glenwood. I had the oppertunity to see a few games, and I feel he has alot of potential.

@Griffon: It’s no secret that the Kearsney U15A team is not up to scratch this year … A lot can happen in the next 9 months – the ones with the most potential to improve would be the tighthead Luyt and lock Jackson – whether they can improve enough to be GK material remains to be seen though. The hooker Brown also looks a really solid player if he can keep his head.

@RUGBYMAD: Agreed – IMHO Strydom and Van Rensburg were easily the best U15 centre pairing in the entire tournament, they looked dangerous everytime they touched the ball and were also very effective defensively.

Interestingly 4 of the 7 backs in the DRSU U15’s have quicker than 11.5 100 Metre times – plenty speed there.

Yes, there were certainly a FEW good players in the 0/15 DRSU team…but there was one boy who played with passion every game and created alot of oppertunities for the backline. He certainly was not a “stingy” player and kept the ball flowing. His line kicks were good aswell. He played #13 and I believe his name is Ruan Van Rensburg. It was he that scored the “most talked about try” vs Blue Bulls that was not awarded.

Looks like the U14’s did well after a rather unheralded start at the trials with so few guys pitching. Seems like the boys that were there – put their heads down and played the game.

@Cyndi – thanls for that encouragement on the KZN boys behaviour. It seems that KZN youth teams have a good reputation at just about all tournaments. Excellent to hear.

It was an absolute honour and pleasure getting to know so many of these boys better, especially the U15 team. I can honestly say that, in general, the KZN parents can be proud of their sons who behaved well, played hard, and showed good sportsmanship whether they won or lost … and even during the U15 Blue Bulls controversy. Well done to the coaches and management team for guiding the boys through the good times and bad.
I am still sorting photos (over 12 000) for the week, including the coaches game. Keep an eye on my FB page.

@Pedantic: “a shocking miscommunication between referee and field marshall sadly denied them the opportunity to prove that”.

The referee was incorrect to take advice from this person – ‘field marshall’ or whatever he likes to call himself. The only person a referee may consult with respect to foul play or any other matter are the 2 Assistant Referee’s (commonly known as Touch Judges) – and only if they are qualified referees and officially appointed. This was a gross breach of protocol which had a profound affect on the outcome of a match and ultimately a tournament.

The standard of refereeing which I witnessed was generally of a very mediocre quality but I guess you need to take what you can get when you have a tournament during working hours – referees have day jobs too.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Not correct, The U15’s last year got Silver .. beaten by the Bulls in the final minutes of extra time.

Simpson was outstanding at scrumhalf – a huge asset to the team even though he didn’t take on the kicking duty. Sadly he was injured in the 1st half of the final match on Friday, but I understand he is ok.

@GreenBlooded: The DRSU Under 16’s were excellent! I think the score of 14-8 flatters the Bulls a little as the DRSU team left at least 9 points on the field from penalties not taken or missed. Excellent all-round performance and the first time in history that the DRSU U16’s have won Gold.

@star: Tagen was named joint player of the tournament for the U15 DRSU team along with Kevin Smit who was outstanding.

Strydom has shown signs of excellent ability in the past – in this particular team he had the opportunity to deliver that excellence consistently, keep an eye on him, he’s a huge talent.

@star: Wheeler was excellent at right wing and was starting line up in all games- honestly don’t understand why he’s played at centre at school.

Lee was solid backup at hooker / prop – played off the bench most games but did his job well when he got the opportunity.

Hosken was played off the bench at scrumhalf but started at flyhalf in two of the games – a VERY successful experiment, he linked very well with Strydom and setup two tries with great distribution… could very well be his best position if he works on his kicking.

U14 Giving a much better performance against the Bulle – down 10-0 at HT.

U15 game ended with major controversy – after scoring the equalizing try the referee from the previous match having a breather at the medical table (i.e. a spectator) reports a foul play incident (while the DRSU kicker is lining up the conversion), the referee accepts this spectators advice, disallows the try and awards a penalty. WTF!! The worst call in a tournament so far characterized by generally mediocre refereeing I am sad to say.
