SA School Rugby Top 50 for 2009 to 2012

BoishaaiPa has again been kind enough to share his calculations with us.

This time he has accumulated results from 2009 up to and including 2012 (4 seasons) and ranked the Top 50 Schools in South Africa according to this data.

The school categories form a vital component of the rankings calculation. For instance schools benefit from achieving good results against other strong schools. The rankings below will form the basis for determining school categories ahead of the 2013 season.

    @HORSEFLY NO.1: Ja, there’s a huge amount of feeling about Skonk. I don’t know how it affects the kids that never met him but for us oldies it’s serious stuff. If you ask any Old Boy about the privilege of running through Skonks Arch (I never did), they will tell you that it adds 25% to your performance at Goldstones. People can tell you that tradition slowly wanes, but they are wrong – it just withers if it is not maintained. It’s nice to note, this many years after I left, that there are still enough boys at the school that honour the traditions for them to be evident everywhere. Playing on Goldstones is just something else, even running out for the 5ths. I am sure all schools have this – but it’s why I get all twitchy when visitors show disrespect, because this is mine. I have said it before, but it means a lot to me to walk into my sons dorm, to know that his great grandfather slept there in 1911 and his grandfather in 1943.

    Then we make touring teams sleep in Clark House in the 3rd Form dorms right next to Victoria Hall so that the ghost of William Abbot can watch over them. It’s spooky I tell ya.

    Yip definitely something about Maritzburg! This is why i believe this years u14s would not have got that try in the last 5mins if theyd been playing at College!
    Same with our u14A of 2010. Lost 10-6 at durban then thanks to a last gasp try by the college cappie D.Goodson. A year later at College they lost something like 21-8. This year back in Durban they only lost 12-5 against a College team they truly shouldve beaten.
    This is why a win at College is treasured so much by other schools!

    @Roger: Didn’t look like they were making an effort, they just fitted in. Find the same with Pretoria Boys but, strangely, much less with Affies who didn’t like the soutie chow and were pretty reserved, even when I spoke the taal to them. I suppose my boy is the same in a ‘Kaans home so it’s all good.

    @ Roger-It is the big derby in Durban and one of the few times both schools can field 28 teams.It seems to be a spill over from the issues encountered earlier in the year.2013 will be the last year for Kearsney’s dream team so they too will be very competitive.
    @ Gungets- You will find that when the Westville U16s were U14 they also did a clean sweep of College. The problem with the U15s was that they were playing at College.I remember watching the U15C beat College at Westville by over 20 points and yet lose at College by 10.Something is not right in the PMB water.
    Surprize was probably not the right word. They are defintely under the radar at the moment and therefore the most dangerous of animals.

    @ Gungets – good to know – care less about the result and more about the ethos and traditions. Glas the boys retain and enforce the manners the school is renowed for. My son is at a local private school (no names mentioned) in JHB and at primary school level it is without peer, however, the high school leaves a lot to be desired and they can’t hold a cndle to KES w.r.t traditions, manners and general behaviour.

    @Star why are Westville and Glenwood not playing – I thought that was the big Durban derby? Similar to KES – Jeppe? Kearsney should be pretty useful in 2013 as well by all accounts.

    Your U16E lost to College this year as well. Perhaps too far down for you to consider. Did you guys bu .. I mean .. attract … some U16 players because that years record at U15 was not too hot?

    @ Roger- On paper Westville should have a very strong team.At least 12 boys would have played Ist team, 60 % of the players from 1sts to 4ths are back and the entire current U 16 age group were undefeated locally(must be some sort of record) However as we noted with Grassy’s GW predictions things can get lost in translation and the attitude and team work of a group of players can sometimes mean more than past achievements and reputations. MHS this year was a classic example. I think College will be the surprize horse this year and if GW can get the basics right( selections and team dynamics)then they will be a contender again. It is just unfortunate that Westville will not be playing them as it makes the local inter school comp redundant and takes a lot away from the energy of the local scene.Westville are playing PBHS though.

    @Roger: As hosted kids they were top notch – I always look forward to hosting them. It seems that College and KES have a great deal in common with what we expect from our boys. Fitted right in, were game for a 5am wake-up so that they could get some ocean time in. Their hockey at U14B was slightly less successful – they took a 9-0 bun. That U14B side was undefeated, including beating the Michaelhouse U16B side, scored 85 goals to 4 against. They even had a win and a draw against their own U14A side.

    @Roger: I did not stay for the rugby. We hosted 2 KES boys so my lightie got an optional weekend off and in Gr8 if you do not have to stay, you don’t. The juniors get harrassed quite a bit so time away from the school is grabbed with both hands. He played his hockey game and left.

    @ Star – there have been a few special teams – 1964, 1968, 1972, 1974 (Lee Barnard), 1978, 1982, 1988, 1998 (Joe Van Niekerk), 2009, 2012 – only 6 losses out of a total of 150 games.

    are Westville looking good for 2013?

    @ Gungets / Star yes – 1981-1990 were pretty good for KES as well (besides ’85) – win ratio above 75%. 86-91 KES were unbeaten in JHB and that included Monnas every year. Looking forward to 2012 – I am sure KES will be pretty handy again, they have got the structures and coaching spot on. The KZN dominance theme is only a Hopper wind-up – however, the only KZN school that has a better head-to-head ratio against KES is College :smile:

    @Roger: “Away” to College up on the highveld doesn’t really qualify. The KZN boys are all going to be sucking oxygen in front of a partison crowd. When I say “travel” I really mean 8 hours in a bus, then running out on Goldstones. Your 2009 win must have been something special – I missed it (thankfully!)

    @Roger: The 1981 – 1990 period of 10 years was solid for College. Played 166, Won – 153, Drawn – 5, Lost – 8. Of the losses there were 2 to GCB by 1 point and 4 points, Queens by 3, wins against Grey High, Queens(3) and PBHS(7).

    I think from a consistency perspective 2007 to 2012 has been a purple patch for KES.For the 2009 team to put 52 points on College at Goldstones is no ordinary task. I think but for a dubious ref decision at PBHS that could be their best team ever.But to translate that peak period to a general domination of KZN is pushing it a bit.In 2011 they played Hlton and MHS who had probably their worst teams in a while.Westville and College have also not been at their best for a few years.It will be interesting to see how KES does next year against both College and Westville away.

    @ Gungets – 1983, 1985, 1992, 1996 and 2001 were at the St Stithians rugby festival so technically were away games for KES as well :smile: I watched 1985 and 1992 games against College – unfortunately for KES, College caught them on two paticularly bad years ’85 were an average team and ’92 worse than average! No matter though – its in the record books. College must have been good on ’83 ‘cos I think KES were pretty good that year too.

    You will find that DHS has produced the most proteas and international reps in cricket in the country!
    Proteas were at about 38 or 40 last time i checked(a long time ago) and Jonathan Vandiar is our latest hope of making it for Proteas. As for international, Nick Compton is our latest rep among many, many others.

    The records and reps go on and on…
    I dont think there are many schools that can match DHS’s cricketing pedigree , maybe KES comes close?

    Going back to 2007 in rugger, KES has played and beaten Michaelhouse, Hilton, Westville, College, DHS and Northwood and only lost to Michaelhouse (2007), College (2010) and drawn with Westville (2009). That just leaves Kearsney and Glenwood – I am sure the schools will met at some stage but given that KES has only played Kearsney 4 times (and won all 4) and Glenwood 5 times (won 4 lost 1) it may be later rather than sooner – more’s the pity! On the cricket front I am not sure of latest results – perhaps some enterprising blogger can dig them out. In the last 20 years, the greatest teams KES produced were between 1991 -1994 when Neil Mckenzie, Anthony Pollock, Nicky Pothas, Ryan Watson and Adam Bacher all played and when KES lost their last game of the 1994 season it was the first loss in three seasons! The school has produced more than 30 international cricket players, the latest been Dane Vilas and, in my opinion, the next one will be Quinton De Kock – he must be on the verge of Proteas selection! There cant be very many schools in the country that can match KES’s cricket pedigree? In Natal – I think only DHS is close?

    Yaj but it will be the same for most schools then? But some schools dont play matrics at all for the 4th term sports which start in 3rd term. For DHS, we couldnt resist playing our matrics in cricket as one of them will almost surely achieve higher honours in cricket.
    But for water polo, we have a squad with zero matrics!
    5 grade 11s,2 grade 10s,3 grade 9s, and a grade 8 is our 1st team polo squad.
    Its why we arent worried about our results as we know something special is going to happen here in a year or two.
    ( The 1st team experience is why our U15s are putting to the sword teams they couldnt really beat before)

    The problem with cricket is the contradiction between the 1st and 4th terms. Westville had 9 players back from last year and therefore had a very good team in the 1st term. However they will lose these players in the latter part of the 4th term and therefore will have a very inexperienced side.GW will be more settled I feel as they have exposed several U16s to top level cricket.

    Dont be too satisfied mate! At least not till you beat the WBHS side which is really good this year. I hear that the KES vs DHS game was a cracker with KES pulling away only in the last few overs.it seems KES always falls short of playing what is KZNs best side for that year in all sports.

    @Roger, yes but I think for a tourno like Michaelmas the sides will want to be at their strongest. Glenwood lost some key senior players at the end of 2011 and this year is rebuilding. Shaylen Pillay’s SA Under19 team mate Prenlan Subrayen held our team together last year. We are lacking a few experienced players. Anyway, well done again in beating 3 KZN sides, still doe snot mean KES have any sort of reign of KZN’s best. Kearnsey, Westville and College have pretty decent sides.     @Roger: Leaving out House, Kearsney and College means that the claim of beating KZNs best might fall a little short. Does College play KES at cricket?

    Affies just chased down College’s 226/7 with 3 overs to spare. Seemed like a hell of a match.

    C’mon Hopper – every team at the festival is young :lol: – always is as it is final term and most matrics are swotting up for exams! Anyway – 2012 has been a mediocre year for KES cricket as the results suggest. Mediocre still seems good enough to put one over KZN’s best though – Glenwood, DHS and now Hilton :lol: Waterpolo results I saw were that KES beat Grey PE, lost to Jeppe and drew with Rondebosch and Selborne – do you have any others?

    @Roger, just to add this year’s 1st team cricket is probably our weakest in 5 years. It would have been alot tougher in previous years. However, KES showed it was not a fluke by beating DHS easily and putting 343 up against Hilton. 2012 is obviously a good year for KES..

    @Roger, firstly well done to KES on a great performance! I eat my hat, but to be honest and said above was not expecting much from our young side. I heard Glenwood lost 5 wickets in 2 overs and were never going to come back from that. They were at one point 50/5 and did well to get to 111. Anyway, the team includes quite a few Under16’s that they are giving some exposure too for next year. Also, I heard the pitch was pretty damp and had tennis ball bounce, we all know what happens when you lose the toss on a wicket like that. Anyway, KES obviously have two brilliant players in Pillay and Valli, certainties for SA Schools. Glenwood must have lost Wissing early, as he is our best player and will make KZN schools. That said, the boys did well to bounce back and beat St Davids on the 2nd day. This side is not as bad as the result against KES showed. They did beat both Northwood and College in term 1. Lastly, Roger….what happened to KES at SACS? I see Glenwood had some good victories over College, Northwood, DHS, Grey Bloem…..but just missed out on a quarters spot…

    Star is correct but WBHS must be the best this year. Thryve played some amazing cricket. I know i keep saying this but DHS will be up there again in about 2 to 3 years time.
    Our u14s have the best bowling attack in the province andhave only lost their first two games of the year whilst our U15s (whom im kept being reminded were all bought from DPHS) are a very good all rounded team. They could and have beaten everyone at least once.(Besides WBHS whom they draw to almost all the time)

    But hey , 4 players in Dolphins team plus the coach are DHS boys so we are no slouch :grin:

    @ Roger-DHS are historically the greatest cricket school in the country. However as Horsy keeps reminding us they are in a re-building phase.Westville has beaten DHS and had GW on the ropes when they played earlier this year.It is a surprize they are not at the Michaelmas week but rather at Graaf/R when they have beaten Grey P/E by 3 wickets and Dale College by an unbelievable 221 runs.

    @Beet, just checked KES results from this year, also very mixed. It seems their best two players are Valli and Pillay. They lost to Grey College by 110 runs, lost to Parktown by 3wkts, beat St Johns by 69 runs, lost to St Andrews by 19 runs, lost to Waterkloof by 24 runs, lost to Affies by 3 runs, drew with St Davids Marist, beat Sandton Area by 7 wkts and finally had washed out games against Jeppe and PBHS. So this weekend will be interesting for sure…

    @Beet, not really as we don’t really play similar opposition. All I can say is that Glenwood have had 3x SA Schools players in the past 2 to 3 years, Prenelan Subrayen (SA Schools captain 2011 and SA Under19), Sahil Bissoon (SA Schools 2010) and Sumanth Sunkari (SA Schools 2010 & SA Under19). I think that is the best achievement by a KZN school in the past 3 years. Also, Sunkari played SA Schools hockey too in 2010. I know in term 1 the 1st team had very mixed results;

    vs Westville the game was abandoned due to rain (Westville 221/9 and Glenwood were 105/4)

    vs Michaelhouse – lost by 5 wickets (Glenwood 154 all out, MHS 156/5)

    vs Northwood – won by 6 wickets (Northwood 140 all out, Glenwood 141/4

    vs DHS – lost by 51 runs (DHS 218/7, Glenwood 167 all out).

    vs College – won by 13 runs (Glenwood 150/7, College 137 all out)

    Phehlukwayo, Ramlugan, Pearce and Wissing seem our best players. I have no idea how strong KES are this season…

    @Grasshopper: True. KES are ranked in the cricket top 10. Are there any comparative results to point to where Glenwood stand in relation to KES or is KES just traditionally a cricket powerhouse?

    @Beet, I don’t really care about what happens in the cricket, rugby is my real passion so happy to eat humble pie if Glenwood lose. Cricket is KES’s strongest sport, so not expecting too much to be honest, especially if the matrics are not playing…

    @Roger, I don’t care anyway….prefer the beach to malls. Anyway, I see Glenwood play KES at Michaelmas cricket week this weekend.     when i used to bunk out to Bella Napoli it seemed a far longer walk than 3 km china bean – but I will not argue semantics – suffice to say Kes borders Houghton to the north and west and Yeoville to the south and Orange Grove to the East – get it, got it – good :lol:

    @Roger: Who cares about Parktown, Houghton blah blah blah. We are so happy with our lot here in KZN that basically anything north/west of Van Reenen is simply Joburg.

    @Roger, KES is exactly 3km from Hillbrow by car down Ash street into Louis Botha, into Tudhope and past Barnato Park School and you in Hillbrow. It’s about 1km as the crow flies, so you are clutching at straws there boet…..KES is basically next door to Hillbrow. KES is as close to Hillbrow as Glenwood is as close to Umbilo. Glenwood is called Glenwood because it’s in the suburb of Glenwood, Kapish!

    I will take that distorted picture and the KZN domincance all day. BTW – how’s your geography – when you refer to Hillbrow High I assume you mean Parktown? If you mean KES then a more apt description would be Houghton High or Orange Grove Academy or Yeoville Yeshiva. KES is a long way from Hillbrow. For you KZN types I will spell it out:
    KES / St Johns – Houghton
    Jeppe – Kensington
    Parktown – Braamfontein
    St Stithians – Randburg / Bryanston
    Kapish?

    hahaha Roger! We all know Hillbrow High plays in a weak league and only tested themselves a bit this year against Affies and a weak Monnas because they knew they had a strong year. You say KES have beaten the best in KZN. Not quite correct, Glenwood were top in the province from 2008 to 2011 (the above proves this). Hillbrow High hardly plays any of the top 10 whilst Glenwood play at least 4 of the top 10 annually…quality of opposition is key. It’s like the Boks playing Romania every week and claiming to be No1 with a 100% win ratio….distorted picture…

    @ Beet – not sure what the team will be like next year – off the top of my head all three loose forwards, hooker, flyhalf and fullback are back so should be fair to strong. College actually beat KES in 2010 if I remember so I jumped the gun there! Don’t know too much about Lovett either other than he is big into his rugby – lets wait and see.

    given that KES has not lost to a KZN school since 2007 (Michaelhouse), it is safe to assume that the quality of opposition in the greater TVL is superior :grin:
