Selborne announces their new headmaster

Ahead of what’s expected to be a cracker of a rugby season for Selborne comes the news that Andrew Dewar will replace now retired principal Sam Gunn who has provided the East London school with 21 years of unbelievable service. Interestingly Andrew Dewar is the deputy headmaster at Queen’s College just like Mr Gunn was before he joined Selborne back in 1993.

From the Queen’s College website:

Queen’s College Deputy Headmaster, Mr Andrew Dewar, has been announced as the new Headmaster of Selborne College. Mr Dewar has been a member of the Queen’s College staff since 2012. During this time he has poured his heart and soul into Queen’s and earned the utmost respect of the Queen’s College community.

Amongst a host of portfolios that Mr Dewar has held at Queen’s College, he has been Head of Discipline, MIC Hockey and 1st XI Cricket coach. He has been totally professional in every task that he has undertaken and has shown himself to be a true and valued schoolmaster. He has taught Geography and Mathematical Literacy with much success. In a relatively short space of time he has made a hugely positive impact on the lives of many young Queenians.

Mr Dewar’s wife, Angela, has formed part of the school’s Administrative team, overseeing the admissions process and being in charge of the school’s webpage. Both these tasks have been performed with the complete professionalism and success. On top of this the Dewar’s son, Matt, has been a top academic, cultural participant and extremely talented sportsman during his time at Queen’s College.

The Dewar family are going to leave a huge void in the Queen’s College family and we are very sad to see them leave. That said, we are also extremely proud of Mr Dewar’s achievement and are thrilled for him and his family as they prepare to take on this new and exciting challenge in their lives.

Go well Andrew, Angela, Matt and Alex.

@rugbyfan: He told me himself he’d be back on the rugby field this year. Unless he’s changed his mind since we last spoke at the end of last year, he will definitely be back this year.

As much as I didn’t like the fact that Ilano quit rugby last year. It’s been good for that young u15A (now u16) side to learn to play without him. He’s always been their go to man and I think they grew incredibly as individuals and as a team last year.

Young Keith Kroutz is gifted, he’s just 1 of those boys who have an incredible feel for the game, it’ll be between him and GCollege86’s boy for the Border u16 no.10 jumper

@beet: Yeah was also very surprised that Ilano Smith had not played for nearly two years as a junior he was one of the best No 12 I have ever seen and if he is back playing rugby that would be great as the youngster playing No 10 for Under 15A last year was aslo brilliant so that would give there under 16 a great boost.

@rugbyfan: Thanks for that news. Is that the same Jaco van Schalkwyk who played fullback for Free State a while back?

@rugbyfan: Yeah I was surprised last year when Ludz told me he had given up rugby for hockey. So good to read that he might be returning to rugby.

@beet: Herd from Rob Kempston the other day that Jaco Van Schalkwyk ( Ex Paarl Gym ) who was coaching at the Kings has been appointed Muir College 1st Team coach, if this is true it will be really good for Muir rugby development.

Will be doing my normal 10 day client visits around the Eastern Cape from Monday so I will try and pop around to all the main schools and give a report back what is happening for this year.

@Ludz: Was in Queenstown yesterday and had a chat to one of the QC teachers and there seem’s quit a positive buzz about there under 16 age group this year as he was saying that Ilano Smith would be back playing rugby this year.

Never new he had stopped playing?

Great link at the bottom Beet – I enjoyed reading his (Gunn) comments – very good advice to all.

Wishing Selbourne well on their road ahead – and Mr Gunn on his retirement.
