Here is something I was able to piece together from various emails and the blog. It would be go if bloggers could add contributions to help expand it.…
It may not be the perfect schedule but it’s very close to one. Menlopark rugby is on the rise and their 2015 fixture list speaks volumes about their focus and ambitions to be regarded as a top rugby school.…
Eldoraigne from Centurion near Pretoria have decided to drop down to the Blue Bulls Region Macro Schools B-section for the Beeld this year. With Centurion High also in the B-section and Affies no longer part of the Beeld, the Blue Bulls A-section is looking very small. Chances are the Eldoraigne move will encourage the remaining A-section Marco schools to press ahead with the formation of a proper Noordvaal premier league. Where this will leave the Beeldtrofee with its rich tradition, remains to be determined.
The Blue Bulls Macro Schools sections now look like this:…
Little private school Southdowns, who play in the Beeld Trofee competition for small schools, has built up a bit of a reputation over the last few years for “acquiring” top school players from prominent Border high schools. Now it’s their turn to experience what it’s like to lose a promising youngster.
Kwezi Mafu, a highly rated loose-forward who represented the Blue Bulls under-16 team at Grant Khomo Week in 2013 and in 2014, has left Southdowns College in Centurion, Pretoria to join Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.…
Updated after it was revealed that Garsfontein will not be playing Paul Roos at the St John’s Easter Rugby Festival
Garsfontein will take on South African school rugby powerhouses Paarl Boys High and Paarl Gymnasium as well as Nelspruit, the Beeldtrofee champions 2014 in the space of just over a week during April 2015. Add Outeniqua somewhere in the middle and that’s four seriously tough matches in just eight days. Once all the Easter holiday fixtures have been finalised, this assignment, given it’s time frame will in all likelihood be right up there at the top of the list of most difficult of all for 2015. …
Interesting news coming out of the Noordvaal is that the Beeldtrofee Macro School regions of the Golden Lions, Leopards and Valke have combined forces to form new A and B division leagues to kick off in 2015.…
The Leopards have been very competitive at under-19 level over the years and its no longer that big a surprise when they beat one of the big unions during the junior Currie Cup, simply because they have good coaching, good facilities and they attract many talented players their way. This annual prosperity would not been possible if it were not for the close working relationship that the union has with the North-West University or Pukke as they are so often called.…

Affies have upped their game by appointed two new 1st XV coaches ahead of the 2015 school rugby season. Jan-Hendrik Hattingh (history teacher) and Jaco Koch (gym manager/biokineticist) will take charge of the Witbulle backs and forwards respectively. Koch’s promotion means a new conditioning coach Janus Kruger (previously Boishaai) also comes into the mix.…

Dr EG Jansen of Boksburg will embark on an 11-day (27 Nov – 07 Dec) end of year rugby tour to England and France, which will include matches against at least three different teams. 34 stayers will make up the touring party and each player is guaranteed to play in two games. …
Affies’ return to and limited participation in the Beeldtrofee Macro schools competition did not last long. It was just a half a season long return in fact for the school that holds the record number of wins in the tournaments long and illustrious history.…
When it was brought to my attention, this one sort of reminded me of the late Gerbrand Grobler who in the latter part of his sports career would charge into the crease to deliver a ball for the Northern Transvaal cricket team during the summer months and then cross the Jukskei and turn out at fullback for the Transvaal rugby team during winter.…
UPDATE: NELSPRUIT WINS 20-19
Garsfontein will go in search of their very first ever Beeldtrofee title when they meet Nelspruit in the Macro Schools final on Saturday, 23 August. The Beeld has a rich history with 35 different winners spanning back to 1922 (competition started in 1920). Last year EG Jansen wrote their name into the history books when they won their first ever title.…

Following on the blog and comments from a few weeks back, which amongst other things mentioned the absence of school rugby in many English medium Pretoria primary schools, here is a breakdown of where this year’s Blue Bulls under-16 provincial players were born and attended primary school, just for interest’s sake.…

He will be tasked with getting rugby structures in place and coming up with short, medium and long term rugby goals for the school.…

THE ISSUE
This notice has been doing the rounds. It mentions that Linden, Randburg and Riebeeckrand High Schools have decided not to play against Helpmekaar in the Golden Lions finals and the contents of a letter are quoted.
THE RESPONSE…
News circulating in the Noordvaal region is that plans are underway to establish a new inter-schools format for the macro schools of the region. Currently an organising committee of sorts is busy working behind the scenes and are at the formulating stage. They will be inviting schools early in the third term for a proposal on this idea. …

The semi-finalists in the Golden Lions’ league for large schools have been determined after the weekends’ matches. The teams who finished in the top 3 positions on the log will go through with Helpmekaar College, who goes through as the top team. This is by agreement with the other schools and the union. This means that the teams who finished first and second will play against each other and Helpmekaar will play against the team who finished in third position on the log.…
H/S Linden vs H/S Randburg : local derby on 14 June 2014
Hoërskool Linden and Hoërskool Randburg are neighbouring Afrikaans co-ed schools of similar size, located about 2km from each other in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. For many years no rugby matches were played between them as they were playing in different divisions of the Beeld trophy.…
Affies was set to play Garsfontein on 14 June 2014. That match was cancelled.
The Beeld newspaper covered the cancellation of the Affies versus Garsfontein inter-schools rugby fixture. …
The Blue Bulls under-18 trials are still underway. Their teams will participate in a round of games against the Lions on Tuesday 27 May. Final Craven Week selections are yet to be made but at this stage is seems more than likely that the first choice halfback pairing will consist of the incredibly talented Embrose Papier (Garsfontein) and Thinus de Beer (Waterkloof). Both boys are in top form and play influential roles in their respective teams’ successes.…
Battleground Pretoria continues this weekend with not one but two matches. DSTV 319 will broadcast the Garsfontein – Menlopark game at 13h25. This is a good oppotunity for SBR follows to have a look at Garsies two huge under-19 forwards Le Roux Roets and Ruan Ackerman (son of Bok Johan Ackerman), as well as flashy scrumhalf Papier and top rated centre Franco Naude.…
