KZN / Natal Schools Craven Week teams of the 1990’s

First of all I just want to say a big big thank you to Johan Snyman who updates the AffiesRugby.co.za website. Without his time and effort to retrieve the info and forward it, the database below would not have been possible.

If you have the first names of the players listed by just their initials, please forward it to beetb@telkomsa.net, so that the record can be completed. There is also a missing backline player’s name from 1997 as a result of a duplication. If you remember it, please post or forward it.

I think it is time for School to get back to where they were in the nineties, hope the current sevens success will get carried over to the 15s next year

@BoishaaiPa. The Wimpie Vermaak I know sounds a lot like the one you are describing. He used to be (in a way still is) involved in financial advice and investment industry. Think he also played prop at some point (due to his power) to help out.

@Redblack White: Could be the same guy. He was a built like a brick shithouse at varsity and a tough as nails flanker. Beet gave me the 83 Natal schools team but his name is not on there. Must have been pretty good flankers in KZN that year. He went on to play for Maties U/19 and U/20 with the likes of Hans Scriba, Balie Swart, etc.stuffed his knee up beyond repair…was my bestman at my wedding back in ’89….Still a good mate of mine and now lives in Petoorsdorp.

@Gungets Tuft: I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this to you, I work with two College boys who both played in the ’97 team. One was a fullback (the first player of colour to play for the College 1st team), and the other the son of a Springbok, surname – van den Berg. I may be fined a case of beer for mentioning these clues, but that’s better than being handed 24 shots of Tequila for mentioning their names

@Vin: I didn’t even know that they had played a curtain raiser at Ellis Park. Did you hammer them?

You may be interested to know that James Small played in the ’85 1st team and the ’87 1st team, but not ’86. He went to Eden College in ’86 but plugged, so he repeated matric at Greenside. That said, he played for SA schools in ’87, so I suppose that they were allowed to be older back then?

@Gungets Tuft: I watched the big win v Bishops in ’85 and was very impressed with College. The backs were very skilled and the pack was a fearsome unit. They literally smashed a weakened Bishops team.

I also watched the big loss (41 to 9 if memory serves) to Bishops in ’87. Bishops had a spectacular back line and very mobile forwards. They ran College ragged.

Interestingly, a few weeks later Bishops squeaked home v a touring St Stithian’s team and Paarl Boys lost to Saints! Moreover, Saints had a poor team that year as supported by their poor results in Jhb. At the same time, my old co-ed school (Greenside) beat Rondebosch at Rondebosch, who beat Affies (at Affies I think) a few weeks later. Funny old game schoolboy rugby….especially in those days.

@Far Meadows: 4 of the Craven Week reps in ’85 played 1st team at College in ’84. The player who imho had the best season in the ’84 side was Charles Taylor who was really special on the wing, but he never made the CW side.

@Far Meadows: 85 unbeaten in SA (GCB 10-4, Bishops 44-0). Glover made SA Schools, CW were AT Arntzen, SR Glover, KL O’Connor, DG Ross, KLL Smith and JT Stransky who was captain. Legend team, although 87 should have been better but lost to GCB and Bishops only. They had 4 SA Schools players including the captain.

    @CRC:

I would put that down to the aura which College had in those days, whenever you played against them you knew you were in for a tough day.

I see they a 6 Craven Week reps the next year , those guys probably all played for the 1stVX in ’84 , so they clearly had talent in that team. I think that Skonk also knew how to get the best out of the players at his disposal.

@BoishaaiPa: Wimpie Vermaak – I know that name – not sure what happened in high school and beyond, but , if its the guy i’m thinking about , he went to Pelham junior school. I remember playing a cricket match against him at the Kinnoul road field and bowling a gentle leg spinner at him (my warm-up delivery spun sharply off the foot of our mat-man) – nevertheless, he took one look at the cherry and dispatched it with contempt – I believe it landed somewhere on a ship leaving the Durban harbour – strong powerful bloke that – needless to say that episode put paid to my promising cricket career and thankfully I never got to face up to the guy on the rugby field .

@beet: That is a surprising stat for Westville. It would be interesting to compare how the representation changes in the following decade – 2000’s.
Westville had some good sides in the 2000’s as did Kearsney and MHS. I suspect you will see a more even distribution as College were less dominant and Glenwood came through from around 2008 onward.
    I know MHS supplied the CW captains in ’05, ’07, ’08, & ’09 from memory :-D

Crazy hard to believe but only 2 Westville boys made Craven Week in the whole of the 1990’s – Andre Fitt and Sean Flanagan.

Roland de Marigny started playing for Natal (Sharks) at a young age and probably finished school in 1993 but did not crack the nod or was injured. Otherwise 2 unknown okes named Clinton van Rensburg and Clinton Bruyns kept him out.

@Gungets Tuft: A golden decade for College or the others were just kak. The guys that stood out for me then were Rich Kelly, Pieter Dixon for his wig mostly, Matt Frank, Trevor Boynton, de Bruin brothers at DHS (Paul was a beast), Clint Bruyns (smallest and quickest 15 I have ever seen, also had the most faded 1st team jersey ever, must have had 50 caps plus), Wade Wingfield & Nico Breedt. I would love to do a KZN team of the 90’s…

Wow, some memories and faces come flooding back! Leighton Pardey & David Terblanche in 92 were my heroes. David captained Natal Schools, what a machine. Then a very lean period for Glenwood with only really props standing out, Lee Fernandes & Sean Erasmus. Victor Tsewu was a great story, never played rugby up to standard 10, more a cricketer. We convinced him to play prop because he was so strong in the gym and built like a brick shithouse. He was the original ‘Beast’, out scrummed many bigger props due to power and technique, he probably only weighted about 95kg….never found out what happened to him…
