First of all I just want to say a big big thank you to Johan Snyman who updates the AffiesRugby.co.za website. Without his time and effort to retrieve the info and forward it, the database below would not have been possible.
If you have the first names of the players listed by just their initials, please forward it to beetb@telkomsa.net, so that the record can be completed. There is also a missing backline player’s name from 1997 as a result of a duplication. If you remember it, please post or forward it.

I think it is time for School to get back to where they were in the nineties, hope the current sevens success will get carried over to the 15s next year
@Djou: That him yes…Haven’t seen him in a while and lost a bit of contact, but we use to be good mates at Varsity and our early working years.
@Gungets Tuft:
@BoishaaiPa: Noticed now you mentioned Wimpie came from Voortrekker – it is definitely him. Saw him in a coffee shop a month or so ago.
@BoishaaiPa. The Wimpie Vermaak I know sounds a lot like the one you are describing. He used to be (in a way still is) involved in financial advice and investment industry. Think he also played prop at some point (due to his power) to help out.
@Redblack White: Could be the same guy. He was a built like a brick shithouse at varsity and a tough as nails flanker. Beet gave me the 83 Natal schools team but his name is not on there. Must have been pretty good flankers in KZN that year. He went on to play for Maties U/19 and U/20 with the likes of Hans Scriba, Balie Swart, etc.stuffed his knee up beyond repair…was my bestman at my wedding back in ’89….Still a good mate of mine and now lives in Petoorsdorp.
@Playa: By the time the three of us are finished with you I reckon an honourary Old Boyship might be in order, forged in pain …. 8)
@Gungets Tuft: No you wouldn’t, please!!!
@Playa: I would brace myself for 24 shots followed by the case of beers. I am going to get their email addresses from my friends in the MCOBA office and mail them a screenshot
@Gungets Tuft: I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this to you, I work with two College boys who both played in the ’97 team. One was a fullback (the first player of colour to play for the College 1st team), and the other the son of a Springbok, surname – van den Berg. I may be fined a case of beer for mentioning these clues, but that’s better than being handed 24 shots of Tequila for mentioning their names
@Vleis: someone once said on this blog that legend has it he was offered 2 smoke breaks a day by the Greenside headmaster to go back
@Vleis: You are quite right – I wasn’t near my blikbrein. 87 – it was the next time College played Bishops, there was no rematch in 86.
@Vleis: KES won 32-8 if I remember correctly. Was a tight game until the last 15mins.
@Vin: I didn’t even know that they had played a curtain raiser at Ellis Park. Did you hammer them?
You may be interested to know that James Small played in the ’85 1st team and the ’87 1st team, but not ’86. He went to Eden College in ’86 but plugged, so he repeated matric at Greenside. That said, he played for SA schools in ’87, so I suppose that they were allowed to be older back then?
@Vleis: Ok I finished at KES in ’86, curtain raised the Caviliers and Boks at Ellis park against Greenside.
@Vin: Howzit Vin. I finished in ’85.
@Vleis: Howzit Vleis when did you finish @ Greenside?
@Gungets Tuft: Are you sure? Brenton Catteral was the captain of the team that got hammered – I had a beer with him afterwards. Was he also captain in ’86?
@Vleis: 86 was the big Bishops win. Instant reversal
@Gungets Tuft: I watched the big win v Bishops in ’85 and was very impressed with College. The backs were very skilled and the pack was a fearsome unit. They literally smashed a weakened Bishops team.
I also watched the big loss (41 to 9 if memory serves) to Bishops in ’87. Bishops had a spectacular back line and very mobile forwards. They ran College ragged.
Interestingly, a few weeks later Bishops squeaked home v a touring St Stithian’s team and Paarl Boys lost to Saints! Moreover, Saints had a poor team that year as supported by their poor results in Jhb. At the same time, my old co-ed school (Greenside) beat Rondebosch at Rondebosch, who beat Affies (at Affies I think) a few weeks later. Funny old game schoolboy rugby….especially in those days.
@Far Meadows: 4 of the Craven Week reps in ’85 played 1st team at College in ’84. The player who imho had the best season in the ’84 side was Charles Taylor who was really special on the wing, but he never made the CW side.
@Far Meadows: Skonk wasn’t the coach in 84. Dave Dell coached from 83.
@Far Meadows: 85 unbeaten in SA (GCB 10-4, Bishops 44-0). Glover made SA Schools, CW were AT Arntzen, SR Glover, KL O’Connor, DG Ross, KLL Smith and JT Stransky who was captain. Legend team, although 87 should have been better but lost to GCB and Bishops only. They had 4 SA Schools players including the captain.
@CRC:
I would put that down to the aura which College had in those days, whenever you played against them you knew you were in for a tough day.
I see they a 6 Craven Week reps the next year , those guys probably all played for the 1stVX in ’84 , so they clearly had talent in that team. I think that Skonk also knew how to get the best out of the players at his disposal.
@BoishaaiPa: Wimpie Vermaak – I know that name – not sure what happened in high school and beyond, but , if its the guy i’m thinking about , he went to Pelham junior school. I remember playing a cricket match against him at the Kinnoul road field and bowling a gentle leg spinner at him (my warm-up delivery spun sharply off the foot of our mat-man) – nevertheless, he took one look at the cherry and dispatched it with contempt – I believe it landed somewhere on a ship leaving the Durban harbour – strong powerful bloke that – needless to say that episode put paid to my promising cricket career and thankfully I never got to face up to the guy on the rugby field .
@Far Meadows: In 1984 College also only had one KZN rep and won all their game sin Natal.
@Far Meadows: 1980 was the win before that, and then 1966 before that. In the very early years you guys were dominant
@Gungets Tuft:
91 was the first time that MHS had beaten College in years, if I remember rightly both 1sts and 2nds won on Goldstones – ‘Take 5’ sold a lot of beer that night !
@Far Meadows: Indeed – drew 12-12 at Middelberg, lost 16-20 to Paarl Gym. Couple of squeekers in there, 15-13 to Hildon, 19-17 to Linden, 9-6 to House, 6-0 Glenwood. 1991 had 2 reps and lost 7.
@Gungets Tuft:
That is an impressive record. College certainly had an aura of invincibility about them for many years in the 80’s and 90’s.
Interesting fact … 1990 they only had one Craven Week rep, but were unbeaten in KZN .
@BoishaaiPa: I believe you are correct that Wimpie Vermaak played Natal Schools in 1983. Was he from Linpark not Voortrekker though? maybe I am getting confused with the Linpark loosie who played loose forward for Natal Schools in 1981 or 82 .

ALL College tight 5, those 5 were immense at school, just showing College’s strength in the 90’s…
Who is Grant Appleford, surely it should be Geoff?
Anybody have a KZN team from 1983?..Think an old mate of mine played flank out of Voortrekker…Wimpie Vermaak…played for Maties u/19 and u/20 later but stuffed his knee up.

Flanagan went from SA schools to playing koshuis rugby in 2 years. Might even have played seconds at Simonsberg in 2001.
@beet: That is a surprising stat for Westville. It would be interesting to compare how the representation changes in the following decade – 2000’s.
Westville had some good sides in the 2000’s as did Kearsney and MHS. I suspect you will see a more even distribution as College were less dominant and Glenwood came through from around 2008 onward.
I know MHS supplied the CW captains in ’05, ’07, ’08, & ’09 from memory
@Slam: financial help, good coaching, professional programmes, support staff, changing demographics of areas etc….many factors. The decline in PMB hasn’t helped College but shows they have done extremely well to remain an excellent institution…
@beet: didnt Flanagan make SA Schools?
These selections in the 90s jusy proves how much Glenwood and Westville have improved their rugby programs….with a bit of financial help of course
@beet: and Flanagan was pretty kak! He made SA Schools, even the Westville guys couldn’t believe it. Matt Gibson and David Cuthbert were unlucky. Greg Manning was another very unlucky Glenwood player. Roland was my next door neighbour and his youngest boet Marc was close too. Roland peaked after school…
Crazy hard to believe but only 2 Westville boys made Craven Week in the whole of the 1990’s – Andre Fitt and Sean Flanagan.
Roland de Marigny started playing for Natal (Sharks) at a young age and probably finished school in 1993 but did not crack the nod or was injured. Otherwise 2 unknown okes named Clinton van Rensburg and Clinton Bruyns kept him out.
@Gungets Tuft: A golden decade for College or the others were just kak. The guys that stood out for me then were Rich Kelly, Pieter Dixon for his wig mostly, Matt Frank, Trevor Boynton, de Bruin brothers at DHS (Paul was a beast), Clint Bruyns (smallest and quickest 15 I have ever seen, also had the most faded 1st team jersey ever, must have had 50 caps plus), Wade Wingfield & Nico Breedt. I would love to do a KZN team of the 90’s…
@Pedantic: Yep, hear he is off to Westville as that is where his mom lives….real pity!
@beet: Rorich was centre. Not sure about O’Connor. Suspect that he might have been a late replacement, given that he was not on the original list
@Grasshopper: Leighton’s son Kayde is a very talented all round sportsman and outstanding rugby player, one wonders if he will be going to GW next year, somehow I think he may be going to Westville?
Wow, some memories and faces come flooding back! Leighton Pardey & David Terblanche in 92 were my heroes. David captained Natal Schools, what a machine. Then a very lean period for Glenwood with only really props standing out, Lee Fernandes & Sean Erasmus. Victor Tsewu was a great story, never played rugby up to standard 10, more a cricketer. We convinced him to play prop because he was so strong in the gym and built like a brick shithouse. He was the original ‘Beast’, out scrummed many bigger props due to power and technique, he probably only weighted about 95kg….never found out what happened to him…
@Gungets Tuft: Cool – who was the centre: O’Connor or Rorich
