BHP Top 50 – 2014 season preliminary final results

Before finalising the 2014 formula driven rankings, BHP has asked if bloggers can check if all their schools’s games are in the “played” category below. Some early season friendlies and shortened games are not taken into account and neither are any games played overseas on tours. Once I have updated all the data of outstanding games he will bring out the final rankings but doubt if it will change the top 20 anyway.

Ronnie Visagie ens..) Hoop Ermelo kom ook weer partytjie toe..net so ryke trotse rugbygeskiedenis ook Ligbron doen goed).. Witbank Tegnies ook in n groeifase.. Standerton ook mooi op dreef! Harde manne die Pumas!!

@LAEVELDER: My team of the year Nelspruit. For me they were an average team in the beginning of the season, but with guts and they never gave up. The stand out point the couches, to keep a team motivated for so long and especially after craven week, are really exceptional from the couching team. For me HTSM and Monnas have the same problem, believe me if HTSM played the way they played there last few games they would have had a bad season. Garsfontein bad lack, it was so close. But it’s time to give them the opportunity to play in the big tournaments.

Hi Dunlop, well done Grey!! 3 x Garsfontein, 1 x Paul Roos , 1 x Monnas , 1 x EG Jansen. 3 uit 6 van hierdie gewen! So meer as n derde van hul games teen die top 10 spanne in RSA.. 50% winning ratio against those.. not bad at all

@Grasshopper: Lets hope he doesn’t read that comment, we don’t really want him to gain anymore weight – around 107 at the moment – as a natural loosie I think more weight will slow him down.

@star: Palvie currently in G10 and was in the 2013 U16 side so must have been there since at least G9. The mind boggles at how he will dominate in his matric year!

@ Buffel- you are right about the Lister-James. Chris and his twin brother Jeremy finished with Paddy at Westville in 1978. Grant was a few years older. Great sportsmen.
Do you know when Palvie joined GW ? Is he a grade 8 intake?
With regard to double barrelled names possibly the first pupil at House was one Walter Hudson Bennett. I am told I have his smouldering and sexy blue eyes

Palvie was my standout 8 from this season gone. Jaco kept him out but when he got an opportunity he was dynamite. Played against the Pumas in the friendly before CW as a replacement when Jaco was injured and he played a stormer. Would not play him at lock as he has gas to burn off the base and is seriously strong.
@Grasshopper: Half brothers-Grant and Chris Lister-James are Westville old boy’s and I think his half brother went to MHS.He was much younger than his boets.

@Pedantic: Glenwood always seem to produce locks, no8’s and hookers at school level….Jayden Hill (SA Schools lock), Fred Schnetler (SA Schools lock), Jaco Coetzee (SA Schools No8), Derek La Marque (SA Schools & Natal No8), Shaun Malton (SA Schools hooker), Kyle Cooper (Sharks Hooker), Ferdie Horn (KZN Lock), John Allan (Bok Hooker), Don Walton (Bok hooker), Roger Sheriff (Bok lock), Mauritz van den Berg (Bok lock)……actually Glenwood have always been known to have tough packs and kak backs. Only recently has our backline play got pretty good probably coinciding with better results. Isn’t the Kearsney KZN Schools lock back? I liked his play, probably needs to gain 5kg though..

@Pedantic: Backs/show ponies, always getting the airtime, while the big boys have to get their hands dirty up-front  WRT Palvie, he’s got some good Cape Town Northern Suburbs mongrel, can’t coach that. Also made enough of an impact with occasional appearances this year for those outside KZN to take notice, think his carry aggression will make an even bigger impact next year. I for one hope he has a cracking season!

@Grasshopper: I’m not sure about that – it would depend on his aspirations for 2015.

He could slot into the lock position to give the tight 5 extra grunt, but would then be a short, non jumping lock with tough competition to get into the CW team. As a loosie / # 8 he would have a better chance at higher honours. (just MHO)

Remember, it’s not only Palvie that’s getting bigger, they’re all growing. I saw Westville’s Kevin Smit at 7’s trials and he looks like he’s packed on 10 KG since the rugby season.

Staples was a real talent, pity we haven’t had the opportunity to see how he’s progressed but at U16 level Palvie wasn’t too far behind – he’s just not as impressive looking as an athlete.

@Far Meadows: @star: @Thumper: @Buffel: Looking at the prospective squads, the best thing for me is the exciting backs we will see across the board:

MHS – Bader, Furniss and Voster

GW: Du Randt, Morgan, Mukendi (and surely a few new names)

Westville: Wheeler, Ball, Kitching and Tony (We seem to have lost some of the talented Westville backs to the fairer sex?)

KC: Tedder (yes, a new one on the block), Ritchie, Watts and Nesbitt

College: Guma and Kriel (expect an explosion of form from Kriel – my early pick for back of the season 2015)

    Hilton: Dahl & paceman Mcghee

For all these guys to fire they’re going to need a pack to do the hard yards – it would seem on size that Westville will have a monster pack (barring intervention from SAIDS) but they’re going to need it with that hectic fixture list on the other post!

With KC having 8 1st XV players returning, I think they will be competitive – sometimes experience can outweigh size

@star: have never taken a Westville side lightly. Kearsney will be competitive but there are some sides that stand out. This is going to be a good year for rugby. close contests ,hopefully and not too many off the field issues. Good on Westville for taking on the traditionals on the highveld and for the 2 college games. Must have the making of a good side otherwise it could be a little foolish. Will be watching from the sidelines . Is there a Moon to be seen?

Well done guys!! “With a country mile”!! Nellies for the Emmy and Grammy!

    @Buffel:

I think you might be wrong about next year’s MHS side , true Bader is a stand out player but there are quite a few standard 9 boys in both the 1st and 2nds who will be back.

They might be a bit shy at loose-head and lock, but overall they will be a pretty decent side. In the back line there is Bader Pretorius along with Liam Furniss ( at wing or centre ), Frank Goble ( wing ) , Victor Vorster ( full back or wing ) and the Anderson twins who slot in at scrummie and centre – all of who had experience in the 1st XV this year.

@Thumper: Eish I hate to add this but I think we will need to see the effects of imports on 1st XV starting lineups for 2015 before deciding that no team will dominate. New faces could reshape fortunes. Otherwise based on the exciting 2013 u16 year, next year should be a cracker with some very good match-ups.

@ Buffel – Done deal. You must also remember that Kearsney play Westville on Bowdens and House on Meadows. If Hilton play Kearsney twice then we will take the first match. Westville’s front row seems to be taking on formidable proportions. Els was 115 kgs and Stoltz 110 kgs and both seem to have got even bigger with several months to go to the start of the rugby season. The hookers Lee and Prinsloo are not light weights either. Qoma must be well over 100 kgs and Smit is also around that mark. I do not think they will be easily dominated upfront. There is also pace to burn out wide with both wings ( Ball and Wheeler) back and the top try scorer at the GK tourno also in the mix. I do not think this team must be taken lightly

@Tarpeys: Agree, MHS, Hilton and College will all have decent sides. The last prediction Buffel had was very wrong (something about not being caught like a deer in the headlights againt GW. We all know the outcome of that!!). Next year will be competitive with no one side dominating!!

@Buffel: @Tarpeys: It’s not always a good measurement but on paper Michaelhouse and Hilton should both have useful 1st XVs next year. Hopefully Kearsney can come up with the goods to match them.

@star: We did the same- beat Hilton in their back yard and did PBHS at Grey festival. IMHO the hardest games for us were GREY P.E.,E.G.JANSSEN ,MHS and GLENWOOD. Locally we got beat by 3 sides being College,MHS and Glenwood. As far as the win over Westville go’s- I think it will remain in my memory bank for ever.

Next year is going to be interesting in that Glenwood won’t have their stars and MHS will be ordinary with Bader being the exception. I will take that bet. We still need to meet up for the beer handover. Me thinks at Johnnys place over a braai.

@BOG: Noord-Kaap had a great end to their season, but otherwise had a terrible season. They lost most of their games, including against Diamantveld. They did have a few good games, though, and probably do deserve to be on the list. But, despite winning the Shimla league (only two games), they are certanly not the top team (besides Grey) in the central region. All in all, a season they would like to forget.

@ Buffel- we need to keep you interested in SBR for another year. How about a similar bet to last year? Kearsney v Westville,Hilton and House. Winner takes a Johnny Black. With regard to the rankings and Kearsney’s position wrt Westville can you give me one instance where Kearsney outperformed Westville in relation to common opponents. In fact Westville had 2 of their greatest victories ( Hilton and PBHS) and Kearsney 2 of their all time worst( GW/House). SA School Sports has Westville at 17 and Kearsney at 37. BHP’s ranking is actually more on the money than most so well played sir. You can’t use that get out of jail card against Westville for everything.

@valke: @BoishaaiPa: A team should not drop points because of that.

I think Boland Landbou had a strong team this year, they lost in the last min to PBH after a tighthead and very narrow losses against many top schools (Paarl Gim). Yet they are 31st I am not questioning the list but it is clear that the formula used focuses on victories, even if it is very narrow victories.

    @BoishaaiPa: Thank you Sir.

I was quietly wondering what effect those matches would have had.

Please note that my comment was only meant as a comment and in no way aimed as a criticism.

As stated before, I believe Top 10 is a fair reflection of this team, compared to last years team that ended up in the Top 5, which was also a fair reflection of that team.

@valke: You did not loose out by the two matches being cancelled. I did the maths. You will only have gained 1.6 bonuspoints for 80% winratio (assuming you won both matches) but your average would then have been calculated divided by 20 matches and you would also have picked up lower amount of category points per game only giving you a max probability of 6 points for both matches. Your avg per game is 3.17 now…it would have dropped your average slightly but you would have remained in 10th spot with an Avg per game of 3.15

@All Black: Affies were top last year with only 14 games. If anything, this speaks of the consistency of this system in my view.

@BoishaaiPa: Couldn’t you place Dale and tygerberg in alphabetical order?

    On a different note.

EG Jansen had 5 boys in the 1st team this year that had the privilege of being Tuks ( Nu Power ) champions, League champions and Beeld trophy ( Makro Schools ) champions at the same time !

Congrats to these boys, as not a lot kids will ever experience this during their school boy rugby days.

@BoishaaiPa: I think with respect to our region, you have it spot on.

EG lost its 80% win bonus due to 2 cancelled games which, looking at how close it is between #6 and #10, could have changed their position slightly, but I believe top 10 is a fair reflection of the 2014 team.

Kempies and Transvalia also more or less where one would expect them to be.

Thanks for probably the most accurate ranking around !

@Buffel: Only if those two teams were the only ones in the equation yes…there are other factors and teams that also influence the results. It is formula driven..live with it.

Sorry- there is no way that Kearsney are in 39th pos and Westville in 21st. Almost identical record. That is totally out of kilter. Yes ,we had 2 heavy defeats at the end of the season but by no way are we 18 positions worse off ,and we beat them!!!

@All Black: Dry your eyes. That school knows that their boys are not professional players. It’s called good player management, playing the right schools and getting good results; a classic scenario of quality over quantity. You should be praising the school for their approach and criticizing those that play over 16 games. The same school you’re referring to is in the top 10 schools with the most players playing Currie cup rugby this year and could actually be in the top 5.

FYI they actually played 3 more games at the ISRF and won all 3 including putting 40 odd past Bishops.

Some could say that they have the best private school rugby program in the country at the moment without any recruitment and other tactics that are spoiling the purity of school boy rugby.

What was interesting about this season is the amount of games teams lost. Only Grey lost only one but many of their victories could have gone either way eg Paarl Gim, PBH and Paul Roos games.

Not one team was really a cut above the rest as Paarl Gim was last year with some big wins over big schools.

I would like to thank PBH for what I believe to be the best reflection of rankings in the country. I think the top 10 is pretty much spot on. I just have one question (not a complaint). How are sides with the same average separated? eg. Grey PE and Wynberg both on 3.21 and Paarl boys and EG Jansen on 3.17.

Just an observation. How can you have a team in the Top 20 who only played 12 matches? I realise that the formula does not take this into account.
