Glenwood recognised as KZN’s no.1 school rugby team 2014

Traditional Boys’ Schools Rugby Luncheon – 2014 (Report from Glenwood)

On Friday 29 August, the 10th annual Traditional Schools Rugby Luncheon was again successfully hosted by Rob Visick, Doug Tweedie and their team at the Salt Rock Hotel on the KZN North Coast.

The 2014 edition continues to highlight the growth in popularity of the event with 180 guests from 9 of the Province’s Traditional Boys’ Rugby Schools all enjoying the camaraderie shared amongst these traditional rivals – both the Province and Schools were represented by some of their most well-known Old Boys and Rugby Families.

Glenwood High School were recognised as the Province’s number 1 ranked Team for 2014, having their name proudly etched on the Floating Trophy for the 5th time in the event’s 10 year history adding to recognition in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. 1st XV Captain and Deputy Head Prefect, Kevin Du Randt, was present to fittingly receive the award from ex-Springbok Captain and Sharks CEO John Smit.

The Sharks CEO was the event’s guest speaker and his enthusiasm and positive approach to the role the Sharks and KZNRU have to play in the continued development of Schoolboy Rugby in our Province were palpable and we look forward to significant development in this area of the game in KZN. Accompanying him was another rugby legend and Springbok selector, Ian Macintosh.

All in all another successfully run event which continues to foster healthy ties between the Provinces Traditional Rugby playing Boys’ Schools.

    @beet: No worries thanks. First place is clear as a bell – not so sure about last year. This is where BHP’s formula carries a lot more weight for me. :lol:

    I don’t even know if St Charles is part of the mix now. Rob Visick is not so easy to get hold of. :(

    @Redblack White: I’ve gone back and ranked the schools according to the way the committee may have done it for the luncheon although this would still not explain how they arrived at Westville’s ranking last year.

    @Redblack White:
    House never had a fixture against DHS this year.

    They played St Charles twice.

    @beet: Did College really finish 3rd? If so it could only be because of the return match with GW – I thought only one of those counted?

    Also strange to see House with only 7 games after having a double against Hilton – which of the others did they not play?

    Thank you Grasshopper..yes it was a fantastic season. To think they were one penalty away from defending their Beeld champion status and be nr 1 in the Noordvaal..but the competition was close. You are so right about playing too many games, especially when they had to go though all the festivals and the Tuks 1/4’s , semis and finals within a 3 week period. I really think that if they want to stay on top they will have to cut back on some festivals or matches somewhere..to protect their players from injuries..lastly to think that more than half of the team of 2014 will be back next year, they will be a powerhouse in 2015 and 2016. Their under 15’s and 16’s also played in the Beeld finals.. :wink:

    @TheGoose: without saying too much, he is having teenage problems which he is going to have to grow out of. Was made Captain earlier in the season, but has let himself down somewhat off the field. Has the talent to bounce back, but it will be up to him to prove himself

    Well done to Glenwood. They had a very good team this year..BUT one thing for sure is that they going to get a lot of resistance in 2015 iF there are not stricter rules applied to the poaching and contracting of players. And they are not the only school just to add. I can see a few more schools that will go the Hilton way against the schools renowned for poaching or recruitment of players.

    Clearly the best team this year. I am also glad that there were rewards( SA reps) higher up which is how it should be. I believe that Jaco together with Warren Whitely( Dirkie Uys) are local boys which goes to shown that it is possible to produce the goods when we show the required faith in the local set-up.

    Congratulations to Glenwood, very well done. Let’s just hope that the divisions and cracks that have occurred this year can be quickly repaired. Functions such as this at Salt Rock are what Rugby, and sport in general, is all about.
