Match report: Free State beats the Lions 33-20

  • Lions scrumhalf Ralton October opens the score for the Lions 3-0
  • Free State equalises via fullback Lourens Steenkamp.
  • Lions have a long range penalty which Lions flyhalf Wikus van Biljon attempts and misses.
  • Steenkamp misses the chance to put Free State ahead by 3.
  • The Lions are gifted field position when the Cheetahs player attempts a suicidal diagonal run inside his 22m area and is turned over. The Lions keep up the pressure. Eventually they win a penalty near the try-line and surprisingly opt to tap and set a driving maul. Initially it goes backwards but the Lions are patient and focussed and once the formation is well set it progresses forward to the line where flank Gavin Delport crashes over for the try. Van Biljon converts. 10-3.
  • Van Biljon misses another long range penalty following a good run by big Lions wing Sibusiso Nkosi.
  • Free State flank De Wet Bezuidenhout comes up with two good plays in quick succession. First a powerful carry at pace gives the Free State a great platform from the breakdown. Then a little later he makes the hard yards with a tightly marked carry near the Lions tryline. From there little scrummy Shirwin Cupido is able to dive over next to the ruck. Steenkamp converts. 10-10.
  • On halftime, Free State has an opportunity to score another try following extremely good interchanges at pace down the right hand touch, however an error by Cupido on the line saves the Lions.
  • Halftime 10-10.
  • Free State scores an excellent try. The execution is at high speed making it very difficult for the Lions to reorganised their defence. At the end of the play, Free State no.8 Alex Jonker comes into the line at full speed, produces a big hand-off on a would-be tackler and sprints in from 22m out. Steenkamp converts. 10-17.
  • Straight from the kickoff the Lions strike back via a van Biljon penalty. 13-17.
  • A break by Free State centre Michael Andrade results in the Lions being forced backwards and the latter concedes a penalty at the tackled ball. Steenkamp converts. 13-20.
  • Free State misses a penalty to stretch their lead when the Lions intercept a pass from an offsides position. It’s missed but a few minutes later another error, this time at the tackle affords the Free State another chance which Steenkamp takes full advantage of. 13-23.
  • Free State launch another attack. Helped by a handling error by the Lions as well as the super carrying ability of the ever-present Bezuidenhout, the Free State force the Lions to concede another penalty in range. Steenkamp slots it. 13-26.
  • The Lions have no continuity by this stage. They are making far too many errors and there is not much by way of constructive setups.
  • The Lions continue to play the match pinned back in and around their own 22m.
  • Finally the Lions urgency level gets upped and wing Armand Grobler shows serious wheels as he dissects two defenders on a long run that ends with him crossing the tryline untouched. 20-26. Van Biljon converts.
  • From the kickoff quick Free State flank Victor Maruping is rewarded for chancing hard when yet another Lions error sees him collect a bouncing ball and running in to score a soft try under the sticks. Steenkamp converts. 20-33.
  • Final score Free State wins 33-20.

@Tjoppa: You were obviously kicked out of the house last night and spent the night in the cold, because there can be no other explanation for your incoherent ramblings so early in the morning. Sure, you dont want to use this opportunity to express your admiration for the FS team? Off to go and watch some netball today?

@BOG: But with you doing the advertising are you giving a booklet with each bottle describing the dangers of alcohol use and abuse? The certain end of RSA and all the economic hardships coming. Oh wait and please a dictionary attached to the booklet explaining your wise words. And shit the last thing I presume another booklet to inform the drinking public of all your achievements and important people you met. Oh yes please also explain why you think the important people is important and their achievements too. So that our poor uneducated people can also share in the life you lived.
