Match report: Valke beats Boland 30-26

  • Boland flank Cornel Brown scores the opening try. Fullback Raylinn Philander converts. 0-7.
  • Lock Hendre Stassen with a couple of telling carries.
  • Valke fullback Martin van Wyk scores in the corner after they steal lineout ball on the Boland 5m line. Forrest Roos converts from the corner 7-7.
  • A flat take and line breaking run by Valke 13 Erich Cronje is the set up for a penalty at the ruck. Roos converts. 10-7.
  • A high tackle on flying Boland lock Christie van der Merwe results in a penalty kick to set a lineout. From there great structured play results in a quickball ruck in the middle of the park followed by a good run onto the pass by flyhalf Fabio Africa, quick hands and a try in the right corner. Right wing Earll Douwrie scores for Boland. Raylinn Philander converts. 10-14.
  • The Valke come straight back. The SA champion 100m runner Darren de Bruin then comes agonisingly close to scoring in the left corner from a Roos dink.
  • The Valke continues to pressurise. The Valke wins a second tighthead from a redzone scrum and quickly get the ball into the hand of tall centre Jimmy Mpailane who crashes over. Roos adds the extras. 17-14.
  • Forrest Roos challenges the line and dodges a couple of defenders, coming close to the try-line. Play gets called back for a penalty. Roos has a long range shot at goal. Miss.
  • Half-time: Valke leads 17-14.
  • The Valke start the second half very well. Positive play. They build through phases and good handling. Eventually its Jimmy Mpailane who is held up over the line in a play that deserved a try.
  • Boland and Valke lose a player each to the sinbin.
  • Boland show that they have plenty of flair. They turnover lineout ball in their own redzone and send the ball through the hands at pace, backed up by a long kick ahead to place them on attack.
  • Boland steals a ball at a ruck and attack down the left blindside. It looks promising until Cronje puts in a big tackle to halt preceedings.
  • Boland come up with more attacking play. Execution at speed coupled with a meaningful run down the left touch Jaydrin Kotze  gets them to within a metre of the line. A couple of pick and drives and hooker Adriaan de Waal forces his way over. 17-19.
  • Stassen’s offload in the tackle is the eye-catching feature of a Valke attack which ends with Roos slotting a penalty. 20-19.
  • Boland get a second yellow for an infringement at a ruck and Roos makes no mistake with the boot. 23-19
  • Valke’s scrumhalf Marco Janse van Vuuren puts the game out of reach of Boland with a try after chasing and collecting his own chip kick ahead. Roos converts from an angle. 30-19.
  • Pierre-André Gouws scroes a consolation try under the posts with less than a minute left. Phillander converts. 30-26.

@beet: @boxkick: Beet please advise me on how you allow individuals that actually don’t deliver any positive contribution on anything but purely illicit conflict the whole time.

Having had a look at all of his / her posts nothing ever is about the game but always fricken criticizing and making statements and dumb-ass illiterate comments.

This is surely not in light of the blogs intentions.

@Deon: Deon if you read above I also praised a few Boland players above but I am just one of many who can comment on their performance.

Would be interesting to see who would be in Boland team if they could get back all the boys who first made a name for themselves playing in the region.

@Deon: Agree the Boland guys never stopped playing and were very dangerous ball in hand.

There is no imports in the Valke team all local boys.

Zimbabwe no 8 looks like a good one.

This whole Zim side actually look very sharp.
Is this the same Griquas side that punished the Border CD side?

@beet: I think one should not only mention the good play of Valke. Drostdy is really the only so called rugby school in the Boland. Many Boland players are drawn to Cape Town and Wynland schools, and some unions like NTvl, and I think Lions and Valke feature Boland players (of origin). If one looks at the team sheet, there are many many relatively unknown schools presented.

So, well done to the Boland boys too! I did not see the game, but the score says a lot!

@beet: Agree the Valke guys looked good at times but when losing some structure on defense they came across as vulnerable.

Hopefully this can be improved in the next game.

Still cannot believe that Jimmy (nr12) plays 3rd team at his school. The leadership of Quinton was great and he really lead from the front. Forest at 10 controlled the game beautifully and the 2 centers were awesome. Cronje on deference was a animal and was just brilliant.

Apart from Valke lock Hendre Stassen who has arguably been the best player at CW so far, the flyhalf Forrest Roos was outstanding as to were the centre combo of Jimmy Mpailane and Erich Cronje and the no.8 on the day Quinton van Schyff. The Valke TH prop also worth a mention.

For Border the flank Hadley Hendricks and no.8 Iver Aanhuizen did some good work and lock Christie vd Merwe was noticeable.

Well done Falcons. Very good game. Morne Stassen was praised by the commentators. Putting his hand up for SA schools selection at Grade 11
