@Rhino: I think there are a lot of sore bodies at Kearsney at the moment. Westville have put out their strongest team in both games so far. Tomorrow will be an opportunity for some rotation and game time for boys who have played little over the last few days. That could freshen it up but could also be a bit disruptive. Selbourne will be tough to beat. I am sure the boys will give it their all.
Looking forward to a great day.

@Westers: I do think that the EGJ attack was a little one dimensional though. The first intercept try was always going to happen – the EGJ backline were playing the same pattern over and over and the opportunity for the intercept was probably identified very early on.

@GreenBlooded: On the Glenwood game, after 20 minutes I was saying Glenwood would not be able to hold on. The tackle count at that point was very high. How wrong I was. I don’t think I have seen a schoolboy side defend like this before. They were awesome. The match report might say several intercept tries. But they were not lucky tries. They were created by massive defence. Well done Glenwood. A great game to watch.
The only negative was the coaches allowing Jaco back on to the field. Hope he recovers properly and is not ruched back. Glenwood have a long season so they must give the boy a break and time to recover.

@GreenBlooded: I have to single out Braithwaite. I thought he was fantastic. Great playmaker. He is carrying a huge weight on his shoulders as captain, kicker and playmaker. Although I think the coaches should have brought the subs on earlier, it shouldn’t go unnoticed that the game also changed when he was moved to flyhalf near the end.
He did miss a couple of kicks and made the pass that led to the intercept but with all that is expected of him you have to accept that he will make the odd mistake.
I said right from the start of the season that he should be kept at 9 and I think I have been proven correct.
He is going to run the other KZN scrum halves close for the CW team.

@old timer: Westville were absolutely awesome today. I would go so far as to call that a win for Westiville – given that everyone, myself included, predicted doom and gloom. They obviously had set themselves a task for today and rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion. Thomas and Meilhon were outstanding at the breakdown and carrying the ball up while the No 12 was outstanding on the run with ball in hand and on defence. Actually – it’s unfair to single anyone out. Every single guy put their bodies on the line today. Grey must have been very nervous toward the end. Well done Westville – you showed real character today.

@Bonthuis: just watched a great game of rugby 20 each with 5 mins to go and then two quick tries to seal the game for Grey – one intercept and the second one just ran out of defenders . Westville played themselves to exhaustion and unfortunately when Grey used their bench tactically the Westville coaches naivety came into play and they simply did not react to their players fatigue with the result that we conceded two late trys ! Well played boys you did us proud !.

in any event, I saw both teams on Thursday and based on the performances on that day Wynberg should beat College comfortably.

@Grasshopper: In KZN this year, we know that the 2 sides to beat are College and Glenwood. In the recent past, College have been very ordinary but this year’s lot are going to be right there at the top. My call will be home wins for both when they meet.

Today, College to beat Wynberg by 10. Glenwood up against it. Their sternest test of 2014. Westville have a mountain to climb and KC /Dale game, a recipe for good running rugby. Both teams searching for their 1st win.

Affies sal altyd daar wees.

Wynberg are pretty good, watched them a week or so ago, lots of ‘dream’ players. College just need to stay down to earth and positive, anything can happen!

@boxkick: So what is your qualification now, the rugby strength or the demeanor and manners of the boys? Anyway, no Monnas on that list, and some of those mentioned have fallen seriously by the wayside or are lucky to have a decent team maybe once every 5 years. Maybe you are not that familiar with the Boland culture, on and off the field, so visit the Farm for a game to enlighten yourself, and you need not look further than the respect they are accorded by all opposition before games and the satisfaction after someone had beaten them to know that they are a proper rugby school. Well that and the the fact that they only offer rugby as a winter sport and stick up to 19 teams on the field every Saturday, and that from a school with only 340 learners.

Wedstryd was gekenmerk deur taai fisiese konfrontasie. Wynberg sy kanse goed benut.

@Roger: The story is not a out cricket, but if its importan to you, I don’t like it. The best don’t need to sledge. Suggest you watch “Fire in Babylon” …

Acting decently and sportsmanlike might be boring, but I generally don’t let the behaviour of others affect the way I behave, I believe it’s called “principle”. Perhaps it’s my advanced age, I like to think its still valid. Me, prefer to be boring then.

Perhaps the taunting helped win a match, or got the players and spectators some sort of satisfaction, but at what cost. Clearly it won you over, so job well done?

@Parkie: Miskien moet jy bietjie google maps probeer…Selborne is in Oos-Londen.

How about the match tomorrow MC VS Wynberg at the Saints festival. This will be one of the highlights of the weekend.
I think this will be MC’s toughest test to date.
Wynberg beat a good Helpmekar team and they gave Bosch a hiding last weekend. If MC are going to be top 10/15 I reckon they have to beat Wynberg tomorrow.
This match could be well worth the trip to Saints tomorrow.

U/14’s: Top dogs look to be Grey Bloem, Bois High, Boland Landbou and Affies
U/15’s: Did I hear correctly? Did Outenikwa win Bois High?? That would be a big surprise. After Helpmekaar’s big win over Garsies yesterday they must be one of the top U/15 sides in 2014. They also won one of the top U/14 teams from 2013, Affies, earlier in the season.
    Top dogs:
Grey Bloem, Helpmekaar, Affies, Bois High ????

Open teams: Wynberg must have a strong side if they won Helmekaar as comfortable as bloggers suggest. Could be the surprise package of 2014??

@Roger: roger, one of the boys actually got lost on the campus, couldn’t find the change rooms and that’s what made the boys late. Shouldn’t they have waited ? Greys war cry is the only pre match ritual and that takes all of 20 seconds so I don’t know if you added that to the time everyone waited.

@Tarpeys: Linden’s first loss of the season and a bad game for them. They can do a lot better, they were totally dominated in the first phases and won very little of their own ball. The backline was always on the back foot and could never show the talent that they possess. With the little possession that Linden enjoyed, College should have won the game much further. The Linden players showed a lot of courage, this is a huge step-up for them and they are now being tested on a much larger stage. The experience gained at this festival will be to their advantage once the league starts in May.
Wynberg looked awesome against Helpmekaar. They won the game on a canter, their number 8 is a monstrous unit. Linden are playing them on Saturday, I hope we can show the same courage that we did against College.

@Roger: do you not also think that because Grey was televised last week, the Menlo Park side and the crowd anticipated cockiness from Grey, and therefore saw what they wanted to see.

@Roger: I wasn’t there so I’ll have to take your word for it. But from what you’ve written, it sounds like the only cockiness came from the Menlo 12 and someone in the crowd. Let’s also take in to account that after last weeks match against Paul Roos there was a price on Greys head. It’s difficult to play on the highveld when you’re used to this thick coastal air. I’ll make no excuses for Grey losing, like I said I wasn’t there so I can’t comment on performance. But it doesn’t sound like a Grey team to be arrogant. It sounds like they got beaten by a good side and there’s no shame in that. They’ll learn, they’re all still kids.

@Roger: Roger my feeling exactly. Those big tackles came from their 12. He was purchased from Garsfontein. The game was all going Grey’s way until their 10 starting missing goals and the try which 13 started in his own 25.

But everybody that was not KES missed a real gem. Hentie Cilliers against Trinity. Gentleman my hats of for the boys from Hentie Cilliers. Before the game waiting for Trinity the boys stood in a bundle singing and dancing. I felt sorry for the few white boys who obviously lacked the rhytm. But hell they tried    When Trinity eventualy came I felt sorry for the boys from Hentie.
And my did they get hammered in the first 3/4 of the match. But Henties spirit was shown in their attitude the whole game run run tackle tackle tackle tackle. Even the remarks when they were 13 – 27 down and time running out showed good spirit. The coach shouting we only need 3 tries boys just 3 tries. And then they started tearing the game apart. Hentie Cilliers my hats off gentleman. This is how rugby was supposed to be played.

@Mike: poor form from Grey. They kept the Menlo boys waiting almost ten minutes in the cold – it took that long for them to get on the field, leave their mascot on the halfway line and finish their Riverdance routine. They were guilty of completely underestimating Menlo and were very cocky on the field – when the Menlo centre scored their first comeback try right under our noses he ran straight to the Grey fly half and told him “en nou grootbek – wat se jy”. After Menlo went ahead they tackled the living daylights out of Grey – one hit on their wing in particular brought the crowd to their feet. You could see that they wanted to win this game badly and chatting to their coaches afterward they felt Grey paid them little respect. It was summed up by someone in the crowd shouting out to the Grey coaches – “not so easy here on the highveld heh boys”

Having said all that Grey should have won easily – missed kicks and attitude cost them in my opinion. As a complete neutral it is obvious they are a very very good side but maybe they believe their own press too much

@boxkick: based on yesterdays performance, I can understand your comments.
I hope you watch the Glenwood and Kearsney games, and comment after those as well.

One of those backline players is joining the SA 7s training squad straight after Kearsney. I am not sure he or the 7s selectors believe he does not have any skills.

@Boxcick-You say EG Jansen loose the majority of their games outside their league and have no skills. Please tell me how did they win the Beeld trophy in 2013 and how did they come within 18 points again the mighty Grey College who will probably be nr 1 in 2014. You obviously have no clue what you are talking about.

@grasshopper – I seriously don’t understand why you rate EG Jansen so highly…IMHO they play a slow game consisting of mainly driving mauls from line outs…their backs are heavy and as a result slow, furthermore evident in the fact that when they come up against opposition outside of their usual Valke region or NuPower league, they somehow always loose the majority of their games. Any opposition worth their mention need to watch only one game to realise that without the tall guy with the white scrum cap they will hardly cross the gain line or win line out ball to drive with…one dimensional

St Johns were in this all the way. Glad to see they have come back so strongly after a troublesome season last year.
St Johns have some good players in their starting line up.

It is going to be very interesting to see who is selected to 8th man for the Lions CW team this year. St Benedicts have a monster at 8 and St Johns have a real class act at 8.

Seems the only close match-up at St Johns so far was PBHS VS the champions of Australia – Scots College.
Based on a few earlier posts, I thought Boys High were going to get thrashed by Scots College.

I expect to see many more mismatches at St Johns based on todays results.

EG Jansen is going to be the acid test at KERF for Glenwood…

Linden 14 – Martizburg College 29. It was my first time seeing College play this year and they had to work hard for this win. The College forwards were the difference. That is a powerful unit that will take some stopping in KZN.The loose trio was particularly impressive with Goodsen and Le Roux being very prominent in the game. The College back were off the pace and Guma was particularly poor. I was looking forward to seeing his much vaunted pace but it wasn’t there. In fact, he was burnt a couple of times on the outside. That was not a bad Linden side at all, in fact, they were a good side with some big boys and one or two flare players in their ranks. From what I saw today, College will be tough to beat this year.

Hilton 24- SACS 23 .Hilton were impressive here. They weren’t flash but very clinical. I was particularly impressed by their work at breakdown and in the tackle. SACS conceded a lot of penalties in those areas and could not achieve any continuity on attack. They did have a chance to sneak it at the end but the final kick of the game hit the upright and Hilton managed to hold for a well deserved victory.

@Grassy: I would have thought that was the case as well, but looking at the stats on the HTS Middleburg forwards, they actually are smaller than Kearsney. They don’t appear to have a very big pack at all. Front row is all below 100kgs. The packs generally seem to be a lot smaller than last year interestingly.
