Match report from St Charles website:

THE RUGBY FIRST XV MATCH ON SATURDAY WAS CLOSE AND EXCITING. Having won their first match of the season at St Andrew’s School, Bloemfontein last week (group photo from that game is below) it was some degree of confidence that the hosts ran onto Harwin Field for the main game of the day.

The rugby first XV coach, Mr Adrian Simmons, writes of Saturday’s match, “Hilton College travelled to St Charles College for their first fixture of the season. The 1XV game was played in sweltering conditions and both teams battled with the heat.

It was the visitors who set the first 20 minutes alight capitalising on the errors made by St Charles. Hilton’s structure and ball retention was excellent in these opening exchanges, and deserved their early lead. As the home team settled down so they managed to find their structure and keep their hands on the ball for longer periods. Having said that, Hilton College deserved their half-time lead of 13-16.

In the second half the Saints took advantage of the fact that this was Hilton’s first game of the season and as the Hilton legs started to get heavy so the lads of Harwin Road applied pressure and were able to begin controlling the game. All credit must be given to Hilton as their defence was outstanding, and they never threw in the towel. This was certainly a positive trait for both sides.

At the final whistle it was Hilton who had managed to hold onto their one-point lead and run out as narrow and relieved victors, 22-21. This certainly was a game that was enjoyed by the crowed.

Both sides need to be commended on the way the game was played considering the heat in which these boys played.”

St Charles College points scored:
Tries: T. Dlamini, C. Rigby
Conversion: T. Dlamini X1
Penalties: T. Dlamini X3

@beet: That was a close game and Greaves is a good player with huge potential. I think the wing you are talking about is P.Jacobs who is in matric this year. I remember him scoring 2 tries in that George Campbell game. Very quick player.

@saints: @Crash Ball: I really have to make a plan to watch some SCC games. Last year I only managed to see one, there 1st game against George Campbell, which SCC also lost by the narrowest of margins. I thought the hooker (now know he is Greaves) had potential and it never hurts to have a wing with size (SCC player was tall but not broad) provided the team can get ball to him, which SCC didn’t do enough times but he did manage to break the line on one occasion.

@beet: His open play is very good. Just needs to work on the throwing. That is gis downfall. But there is very good compitition in the school. Second team hooker Denin Spriggs is very threatning to Greaves as his throwing is superb and plays like a flanker. Both very good players. Glad that there is good depth this year.

his throwing to Chris Rigby was dimal in the first half, but improved in the secound half when they started lifting sibs at the back of the line out.Hilton’s line out was far slicker. Early season though -lot’s of time to improve- in my biased oppinion St Charles lost this game though not doing the basics properly and will improve to be far better team than the team that lost on Saturday.

pity Tedder didn’t stay at St Charles – would have been great to him at fly half. Our hockey sides did really well against Hilton only losing one game . The 1st’s won 4 -1 . I think alot of the younger boy’s are playing hockey because our sides are more successful.

@Crash Ball: I agree. I think he is a player well worth keeping a tab on. Maybe St Charles’ next Siseko jafta quality player.

He was already big and strong enough last year. Key questions are how is his throwing and workrate in 2014???

Great to have a competitive 1st side for a change ! I hope they come away from the St John’s festival with no injuries especially as they will be playing the likes of Paarl boys -this exposure will stand them in good stead for the local season, and if they can tidy up the basics like kick offs and line outs, I’m sure they will have a great season.

I enjoyed the visit to PMB every other year and the boys hosting opposition players and vice-versa….so it’s a pity that the fixture has been cancelled. One thing I won’t miss (at all) is the refs in PMB!

@Vleis: What beet says is true. In fact, Sebastien de Marigny, the Hilton number 8 was one of those players. As for the u/16 game on Saturday, the team had players that were ill and did not play, and it seemed like some of them played out of their usual positions. I believe they will improve as the season progresses.

@Vleis: Definitely. SCC u16 last year lost 2 top quality players who probably both would have featured in their 1st team this season – one to Kearsney and one to Hilton.

@Crash Ball: Hello Crash Ball. What happened to the u16A team? I appreciate that it is only one game into the season, but that is nevertheless a significant decline. Last year, your u16A team also declined, but someone said that was due to one (or two) star players being bought by other Natal schools?

@John3175:Imports and post matrics?? That is a joke. There are no post matrics in tgat team. There are under 19 players but they are all in matric. And the player who left in his car is 18 and in matric. All the players in the team has been at school since grade 8 with the exeption of Jacobs who came in grade 11. Accustations like that are not appreciated. Just take the tough game on the chin.

@Vleis: In U14 Hilton won by more than 50 points, I think last year as U15s St Charles gave them a bit of a fright. The 36-3 scoreline this year was probably a fair result, with a few stars doing well for St Charles, but Hilton just having a few more boys that could make a difference.

Was at the Hilton game, very very scrappy by the Hilton boys! 2 Yellow cards ! Blewett came off injured at half-time with what looks like a serious knee injury and dickerson came off ten minutes into the 2nd half! granted St charles gave it horns! St charles had two post-matrics, one of them even left the match in his car! and 4 new imports ( a very good flanker)
Dahl was outstanding and possibly man of the match, Loftus had a few breaks and De Marigny also performed. but they have a lot to work with Mcghee and Nematswerani the wings had glimpses of brilliant play and so did gouws! From the weekend score lines it seems as though this season will be tight in KZN . No such thing as an easy game with northwood now having bought players and St charles too! Boys can no longer be complacent and expect victory!

@Ballie: That’s a surprising result. Last year, Hilton u15A won narrowly at home, so I thought that they may slip up away.

That said, last year’s SCC u15A had a few imports, so maybe said imports were ‘kidnapped’ from their hostel by a bigger school?

Final score 21-22 in Hilton’s favour. It was a very evenly contested match. Good rugby was played. Hilton is definitely not the team that they were last year, and SCC has stepped up their game immensely. T. Dlamini had a very good game scoring most of the points for SCC with his boot and a try.

@Beet: Sorry for the late reply. Yes, that is correct. Think Motloi could prove to be a shrewd selection. Not brilliant in the scrums, but a very mobile hooker, who isn’t shy of contact. Hilton up 5-0 after 5 minutes.

Personally feel ‘the White’ will struggle without a recognised flyhalf this season. Potential first choice flyhalf Lovatt is out for the season – undergoing a shoulder operation. Another potential option in Beetar also sidelined. Very little depth otherwise. Niall Wheeler (loose forward) also a very big loss for the side.

@Dixon’s: On that note, DPHS have 3 Captains in the current crop. Walker-MHS, Goodson-College and T.Tedder -Kearsney. Not sure if Roberts is captain of DHS. Haven’t seen their team sheet but if that is the case then that makes 4 .That was from the unbeaten DPHS side of 2009 captained by Tedder. 14 of the 15 DPHS boys made representative teams that year and a record for the KZN ‘A’ team from one school in a single year.
It is going to be interesting to see who out of this crop from Prep will make representative sides in 2014.

Yes Dixson’s its good to see that both boys have kept it up, Penzance 2009 u13A Kyan was captain and Jayson vice captain, I wish both boys a great season although I do believe Jayson will have the more difficult of the two.
I watched the Hilton trials on Saterday and they dont have nearly the bulk of last year but they are a very mobile unit which should make for some interesting and good running rugby.

This might be an interesting Hilton team, without to many big names and being written off by a lot of people. With them all being boarders expect them to play hard for their school and each other. I believe there are 7 Grade 11s in the side, from their quite successful U16A side of last year. A good core of players for next year as well.

The strengths will be in the back row with Dickerson,Marx and De M. and at centre with Blewett and Loftus. It will be interesting to see how Dahl has developed and whether he will be able to compete with the likes of Hall and Khanyile.
The frontrow might be the Achiles heel and whether they have the pace out wide to compete at this level. The pace of GW this last weekend was extraordinary and it has been a long time since I have seen a winger run 50 meters untouched.
