KES vs Pretoria Boys High

One of the biggest games of the Gauteng rugby season just happens to be the first one up for both KES and Pretoria Boys High on Saturday 22 March 2014 (13h15) at KES. It’s not the sort of match for which either school likes to be labelled as the favourites, so lets just say that the perception out there is that the team from North of the Jukskei River are the underdogs this time round. A player of interest will no doubt be Herschelle Gibb’s son Rashard Fuller who starts at flyhalf for KES. Team sheets below.

KES Pretoria BH

@Vin: interesting – that win loss ratio really blew out from 1999-2008 when KES did not beat PBHS for ten years. Prior to that it was pretty even as the average 14-11 score suggests. Time for KES to have an extended run

Saw Rashard Fuller play at u/16 level. Thought he was a very good, alround flyhalve.
I think to much is made of size, especially in the backline. He might be on the small side, but will most definately do what is required of him and more.

@Pinotage: Very true. But when the perception of size has an influence on the oulook of the opposition, doubt starts to play a part.

If GCB plays any team, the other team will know that it is GCB and that they are rated as one of the best rugby schools in the world and therefore the preception will have an influence on the way they play. All schoolboy rugby derbys know the other team and play the team accordingly. Sometimes to the detriment of the team.

@Ploegskaar: Never the size of the dog in the fight that counts. It’s the size of the fight in the dog.
The combo of a big dog with plenty fight, disscipline, tradition and solid coaching, is of course what seperates brilliance from mediocrity.
Like GCB, Paarl Gim, Paul Roos and a few others.

A lot of dutchies in that Pretoria Boys High team. The banter from the Affies laaities, when they compete against PBHS, is of course that those dutchies couldn’t get into Affies and had to choose second best

@Vin: man – there are some slabs of meat out there at school boy level.

I saw that the srummie, fly half and left wing are all 75kgs or so – really small – hope they have lots of pace

the outside centre, fullback and right wing look pretty big?

@RBugger: Jeppe were definitely not ineffective in 2013, as they won 11 and lost only four games, including:
    1. a one point loss away at PBHS – Jeppe had a conversion to win but missed.
    2. a narrow loss to Noord-Kaap – Jeppe had a player sent off after 5 mins.
    3. a 36 to 18 loss away at Affies – not great but not shocking v the #1 team.
    4. a poor loss to Bosch, when the latter were still firing early in the season.

Therefore, not a light pack at all really. Jeppe must have had some big boys last year, but obvioucly not very effective

@Roger: Pack weighs in at 772kg (96.5kg) and the average weight of the backline is 81kg. Were you at the Monument, Affies or PBHS game last year – by those standards this is a slightly above average squad. Some of last years packs:
    Jeppe – 840kg (ave 105kg)
    Westville – 768kg (ave 96kg)
    Maritzburg – 776kg (ave 97kg)
    Grey High – 760kg (ave 95kg)
    Paul Roos – 816kg (ave 102kg)
    Paarl Gim – 784kg (ave 98kg)

@Tjoppa: further research – I see the average points differential between these schools at U14,U15 and U16 was 3 points – played 5 times at age group level, KES won 2 and PBHS 3 – again points to a very close encounter

@Tjoppa: Tjop Tjop – last year at PBHS the 1sts drew 17-17, 2nds lost 6-12, 3rds lost 11-17 and U16A lost 21-26. All that tells me is that the game on Sat should be very very close!

@Vin: he Vin – I posted this on another thread – are KES really that small??

Someone told me KES had a smallish team this year – saw the heights and weights of the forwards and backs and they look pretty big to me

both props 104kgs, hooker 92kg and all 183cm or therabouts

    Locks 194cm and and 192cm and 102kgs and 98kgs

    One loosie 194cm and 102kg
    other loosies 90+kgs

fullback, outside centre and right wing all 90+

scrummie, flyhalf and left wing small though

is that regarded as small these days – yeeesh

@Rhino: Hi Rhino, haven’t seen anything on PBHS but I’ve seen the KES 1st team trading – think it’s going to be a tough season for the boys. No real size in the forwards but the backs look like they have some pace. This one can go either way. The KES U15A looks like a very good team, while the U14A has some solid boys in it.
