KZN school rugby to get a new u18 convenor of selectors

At the end of February, Garth Giles (67) who was recently described as a coaching pillar in KwaZulu-Natal, will part ways with Natal rugby after decades of service as a player and employee of the rugby union. As far as schoolboy rugby in the province is concerned, Garth will also relinquish his responsibilities as the KZN under-18 Convenor of Selectors and Executive Committee member. In all likelihood the new Executive Committee member will come from the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union (The Sharks) who may also contribute a new selector but the position of Convenor is an appointment that will have to be made by the KZNRU High Schools Rugby Association.

So long as no Glenwood 2nd team players make the initial squads, I’ll be happy…..we will never hear the end of it again. I want the Glenwood Boys picked to be the best in their positions and picked by non Glenwood affliated coaches…

@star: I would think that the best men for the job should be on the committee regardless of school affiliation.

In every year there are suggestions of bias against the selectors when players miss out. I am quite certain, even though I haven’t always agreed with their choices, that none of the selectors that I have had some interaction with over the years – Ryno Combrinck, Tony Richter and Barend Steyn – have ever displayed favoritism to their schools.

    – Combrinck’s Craven Week sides of 2005 and 2006 had a couple of MHS boys between them including Pat Cilliers and Mike Rhodes.
    – the 2007 and 2008 sides coached by Tony Richter assisted by Barend Steyn had 1 Kearsney rep that I can recall in Kene Okafor who played SA Schools in 07 and no Hilton boys at all.

I think Bell has replaced Erasmus as assistant coach. Also as far as selectors go the privates have 5 as opposed to the public schools 1( Dames-GW). Surely that must be looked at considering the ultimate representation..
