Woltrui. Gaan iemand weer ‘n Superbru groep stig?

@spilly: not to come across funny, but wasn’t 2013 one of Selborne’s weakest in terms of results? Surely 2014 will be better? I watched the team at Kearsney, big pack as usual but skills and fitness were lacking. Some very good individuals but they just didn’t gel as a team, must have been frustrating for the coaches. Liked the one flank, forget his name..good luck for 2014! Always like the Glenwood vs Selborne fixture.

@Queenian and @Playa Great to hear Queens and Dale have a good nucleus of players returning ,understand Selborne have few returning players , but have a talented squad with the most Border Reps in the age groups from previous years .In terms of talent, will be great to see how these 3 schools develop.

@Queenian: Should be interesting to see. But I agree with what some of the guys are saying with regards to lots of boys returning. It’s all about how the team comes together at the end of the day. Selborne’s u16s were not a bad side but we’ll have to see what happens there. I know Queens have a couple of great backs so if they get an opportunity to run they could do damage. Grey I’m sure will want to do as much talking on the field as possible, but loads of talent right through the team.

@Queenian: Dale has 8 returning. The only time Dale and Queens ever struggle is when they have weak backlines.Though Queens has historically benefited from big forwards in the past, Dale hasn’t seen a big pack in over 2 decades.Last time Dale could say they had a big pack was in 1995 when Greg Somerville was prop and vice captain…even that pack was ‘average’ when put against some packs in the country.

Border battle will be interesting. One cant tell with confidence who will come out tops.

@Mike: But I suspect that Dale and Queens will battle this year due to small forwards but there back lines should be very good.

I did hear that there were two Zim boys trying to get into Dale or Queens again not sure if it happened or not.

Selborne will have a new team so its anybodies guess how they will do.

@Mike: Will be interesting to see how many of the Border and EC players are back I am sure Grey PE have at least 12 boys who have played 1st team back and should have a very good year. I do know that Selborne only have 3 or 4. Queens have 7 or 8 and Dale had 9 but with Somila Jho gone to Kingswood that will only be 7 or 8 as well. I do know that Brandwag have 8 or 9 back so should be good also know that Marlow have 10 boys back who have played 1st team so expect them to be quite good.

@Ploegskaar: I get your point and have heard of it before where they keep the Under16A’s together in the 3rd team to build further consistency and ‘gel’ the boys further for their grade 12 year. It could work but i agree with Boishaaipa, play the best side you have all the time…

@Ploegskaar: Where else can the Gr 11 that dont make the 1st XV play, but 2nd or 3rd team?..The idea of having all of them in one team though is in my opinion a bit of a fools dream, as players can change and evolve dramatically between Gr11 and Gr12. I know one of our neighbours is contemplating just such an idea for 2014 with their 2013 u/16s, but I can already see it backfiring when injuries, bad form, etc starts creeping into the 1st VX performance. You need your best players out there on the field representing your school and if they are in Gr 11, so be it!..play them!

@BoishaaiPa: There seems to be different schools of thought on if gr.11’s (that don’t make the 1st XV) should be concentrated and nurtured in a 2nd/3rd team, or played on merit in the highest team. Although probably not feasible in smaller or co-ed schools, most of the big rugby schools certainly have the luxury of player depth and quality to implement this system to ensure continuity. Obviously it will only be successful if all the gr. 11’s appreciate the bigger picture and buy into the concept though.

Rugby in WP looks very strong for this upcoming season. On paper this should be Wynbergs’ strongest year in a long while. Paarl Gim looks incredibly strong too. As far as I know, the Grey PE vs Paul Roos match will be televised this year on the Markotter – always a very exciting game. Would be interesting to see how many EC boys are back for 2014.

@BoishaaiPa: Agreed, sportsman who have too many sports to choose and have to not play due to chance of injury etc. The Glenwood Headboy 2013 Callan Pearce is a good example, so good at baseball he has been given a contract in the USA. He played 1st team cricket and hockey. He could easily have played high level rugby with his size and ball skills but didn’t. I think he made the right move as if he makes it in baseball he will earn alot more than any rugby, hockey or cricket player. Your son must be a machine! http://www.glenwoodhighschool.co.za/head-prefect-signs-contract-2014

@Grasshopper: Some of those Gr12’s that play n those one-off games is good enough to play 1st team rugby if they wanted!. They are usually either the swimmers, cricketers, hockey players etc thats committed to another sport. My own son played for the Eagles in his matric year as he could only attend one rugby practice a week due to hockey and cricket commitments, now at Varsity, he played for his Res 1st team as well as Maties Club u/21 for most of 2013 season…Most schools have a good couple of rugby players that choose another sport..imagine if all the available talent was available!

@BoishaaiPa: Same policy applies at Glenwood. The 8th, 9th and 10th teams are usually a bunch of surfers, lazy louts and smokers to have a hit out before they leave school. Some talented guys are discovered, but really it just for the fun of it. They usually come out for big derbies against College or Westville…

@Ploegskaar: There is no fixed policy on that no. If you are good enough in Gr 11 you will play in the highest team possible. The seccies is usually a very good mix of Gr 11’s and Gr 12’s. The only criteria I know of is that if two players are of similar ability, the Gr 12 learner will get the nod ahead of the Gr11. The Chiefs is thus not the domain of Gr 11 alone. From the seccies right down to the Goffels and Hommels its a mix bag. Exceptions to the rule happens when we play Paul Roos and Grey when we push another two teams into the field, the I and J teams, which then mostly consists of Gr 12’s. When we play Interschools and Gim can accomodate a Goffels and Hommel team, those two teams from HJS will also only consist mainly of Gr 12’s as far as possible as it is those matrics’ last oppertunity to play a rugby game for the school.

@Grasshopper: Yes…now you get it..and having 9 or 11 players left over from last year who was above average at most will not ensure that you have a good team this year because they will still be about the same or slightly better. Unless of course all of your opponents standards drop down to your level!..(which could happen in SBR..its not impossible!)..

18 year old grade 11’s are in the minority, we hope! I was 16 in grade 11. Anyway, I get your point that a bunch of average 17 year olds don’t become a bunch of great 18 year olds. In the top 20 schools, most of the 1st team players are decent so combining with good 2nd team grade 11’s and good under16 grade 10’s usually means a good year. Look at Outeniqua, everyone predicted good things and they delivered……

@Grasshopper: We are not talking about 16 year olds…Some Gr 11’s are also 18 already and are u/19 the next year…Still doesnt gaurentee a good team. If you have 2 or 3 very good individuals left from previous year combining with a good new crop they will be successfull..but a 60% or more “left overs” will not improve your team if they were not good from the start!

@ Grassy- the issue of great grade 11s playing with average matrics was exactly the situation for MHS in 2011. ( and we all know how well they played in 2012 becoming the top dogs in the province). I was a postmatric at Hilton and that extra year definitely gave me more confidence in my abilities. A year makes a huge difference but the team still needs to get the balance right irrespective of returning players.

The difference comes in terms of size and strength – if you play an u16 side against a 1st xv, they will get drilled.

However, a year later at u17 and they are able to compete at 1st xv level. From 14 right up to 21yrs, size and strength change dramatically

@BoishaaiPa: yes, but a year at schoolboy level is huge with regards to growth, speed, emotional maturity etc. Eg I started in the C team under 14 but ended playing 2nd/1st….anyway I’m sure you get what I’m saying. Many of the Glenwood team lost to Gim heavily at Kearsney, they now know what the top is and what to strive for. They also would have learnt from their mistakes.

Experience is not something you pick up in one season…Familiarity maybe, but the dynamics and teams in SBR changes drastically over one season and is not comparable to senior rugby. I have yet to see an average team full of Gr 11’s doing much better the next year…

They could improve marginally, but other teams may again have better players available and you are back again were you were last season!..

@Grasshopper: Hi GH. Compliments for 2014. Here we go again, the age issue. Vadima is a good case study. Last year when I saw him playing I thought that he was over age but the ID book doesn’t lie. It was like when I was playing in the early 80’s against MHS and Hilton and they had Post Matrics. Totally unfair. Nick Doogle was a man playing against boys and it showed on the scoreboard and the San after the game. I think if you are 18 as of the 1st of October then you are able to play against all in sundry and that will include your Craven Week and 7’s tournaments. Sorry to be a whiner but it just is not fair play. On a brighter side, good luck for the up and coming 2014 SBR season and am sure your Glenwood team will produce some excellent results.

hahahah – young Spam will also be u19 and not able to play CW, but it certainly gives GW one hell of a strong side for 2014…

Hope Morne Joubert can up his game for this year, heard that he has major talent, but i thought Lines was a better player last year

    Glenwood play Bishops at Grey PE on the 29th of March, could be the match of the day. Glenwood have 9 returning 1st team players;

    1 Prop Kenny Van Niekerk
    2 Prop Percy Mngadi
    3 Prop Koos Tredoux
    4 Lock Kevin du Randt
    5 No8 Jaco Coetzee
    6 Scrumhalf Khanyile
    7 Flyhalf Curtis Jonas
    8 Wing Spam Ncgobo
    9 Fullback Morne Joubert

Wow, Bishops, Paul Roos and Wynberg look to have nice squads there, maybe the ones to beat in 2014.! Would be good to do the same exercise for KZN..
