@RBugger: just some strange selections. I think 3 sides could be selected of equal strength.
Beet, please can I get the chappies bubble gum jersey?
@HM: Must be strange having the Glenwood jersey next to your name.
@All Black: Skonk must be turning in his grave after his beloved College lost to Port Natal in PMB last week. many 1st XV faces seen in the team I believe. Not sure if the ‘outside coach’ thing is working, not that I mind. Keep up the good work College .
Yes, a lot of the boys act a little blasé about the Vogue Ball but it is amazing how few are late for the bus to get there. Apparently were also taught the ‘Line Dance’ and had to meet and sit with their partners parents for the evening. Excellent preparation for the boys later on in life. Who said this was just a rugby blog?
Here is the Rugby365 link that includes the pools and schedules (incl U13) plus a few of the U18 squad names,

Sofa soccer; Couch Rugby and Squash (same rules as squeeze) have always been widely recognised sports at MC
@Rugger fan: The Vogue Ball is a combined event with the lovely ladies from Epworth. The “Traditional dances” are most certainly a contact sport, and the boys are very willing. I am willing to bet that they are quite willing to give 7’s a miss to practice those skill.
@Rugger fan: The boys can choose so not really forced to miss out.
@All Black: Traditional dances such as the foxtrot I’m sure our minister of culture would enjoy that
It is sad however as these guys (and perhaps some missed full KZN XV’s representation) now miss out on full provincial 7s representation.
I wonder if the same standard would be applied if a boy was selected fro a main stream sport (XV’s, water polo or cricket) at provincial level. Evn some of the non-“traditional” sports seem to get good PR mileage such as golf and polo crosse when learners have made those – so it would be good to get the official reason?
@beet: You called Beet???
The situation with College for the 7’s is that it is not an official sport, yet. The boys are given the option however to play 7’s but they try not to affect their main sports at this stage of the year, being cricket, water polo and athletics. There was also a problem over two weekends where the Grade 11’s were required to attend the Vogue Ball with Epworth. This is a highlight of the year and much work goes into the practicing of various traditional dances such as the fox trot, waltz etc. Really good experience for the boys. You may laugh but College is big on such traditions and rightfully so. What it did mean was a very disrupted 7’s season but this meant that many U16’s got to experience playing against some big names in U18 schoolboy rugby. In the Voortrekker tournament 6 U16 boys featured. With the St Davids T20 and the Clifton water polo tournament most of the Grade 11’s were unavailable anyway.
@BEET: Ya, for sure – would be nice to know…
@RBugger: I think some College folks need to help us gain an understanding of their situation.
College is a relatively big school. They were however one of the last to get their proper 1st XV together at the start of 2013 and now they have virtually a whole Sevens team of players unavailable for selection.
It definitely seems like two areas where they should be looking to make changes in 2014 but perhaps there is more to it than meets the eye.
@Pedantic: It is very strange that the boys would be denied representing their province – why would they be unavailable, for exams or is it for other sports?
@RBugger: In another thread it was mentioned that the College guys weren’t available due to various reasons.
@Rugger Fan: I heard that College were very good – strange that they have so few reps
@RBugger: MC had a good season loosing in the finals and only have 2 players on the bench.
On another note – the U13 nationals were held at CURRO Hazeldean last year – a lovely venue on a koppie with a breeze that flows through. Not so many facilities in the form of changerooms or stands for players and spectators however – but gives a good festival feeling.
CURRO are really supporting school’s Sevens – and the U13 provincials in KZN (although not represented by all the bigger schools) ended with some stunning rugby and a well drilled Westville taking top honours. What was interesting is that CURRO Hillcrest won the plate and it was announced that this was the first time that any CURRO school had won a trophy since CURRO began sponsoring the series. So a feather in the cap of another KZN school. They even have permanent rugby poles up now – good to see rugby growing amongst the school community rather than seeing poles being taken down and converted to soccer goals like we have seen in the past few years.
@Buffel: I don’t think our results were that great, hence no reps – thought that someone like Chris Lines would have made it though
no kearsney?????
@star: Agreed, hence why I think Vidima is there as one of the flank type players. Coetzee and Schramm would have been great!
I see 3 boys are back from last year in Ellse , Schoeman and Joubert. The BIG gap is Schramm. He was one of the best players last year. I presume he has other commitments as he would be the first one on my teamsheet.
Looking forward to their results – any news on the u13 team?
Exciting looking team!
