Paarl Gim adds WP Sevens 2013 title to the trophy cabinet

It had already been a hugely successful year for Paarl Gymnasium up until 14 Sepetember 2013. And now it’s just become that much better. Along with Affies,  Gimmies were ranked as the top 2 rugby schools in South Africa this year. The boys from Paarl also won Die Burger final by beating a very strong Outeniqua, having already beaten the same Kwaggas team in George earlier in the season. This helped Gimmies complete an unbeaten season. In addition to that Rikus Bothma, Jacques Vermeulen, Grant Hermanus and JD Schickerling were selected for SA Schools.

What more could they have ask for in 2013? Well more silverware has come their way. This time it’s the Western Province Sevens title. Although schools Sevens is still struggling for recognition as a sport there are a few Cape schools that have been taking this version of rugby pretty seriously up to now. Amongst them Tygerberg, who have  been national champions in the past and runners-up last year. Excelsior have also been very competitive over the past few seasons. So for Gim to have beaten both Tygerberg and Excelsoir along the way to claiming this WP Sevens title for 2013 is no mean feat.

Tygerberg was 2 time national 7’s champs and runner-up last year to Garsfontein, so good on you Paarl Gim. Garsfontein won the Blue Bulls champs last week beating Affies, Waterkloof and eventually Menlo Park in the final. What about a Paarl Gim vs Garsfontein game to determine the north-south winner?
