The Outeniqua Kwaggas travel to Humansdorp for what might prove to be a really tough start against a Nico Malan 1st XV that is expected to fire on all cylinders this season.
The start of the rugby season at Outeniqua is set to face some challenges as a result of overlapping commitments to the school’s athletics program. With many of the school’s top athletes also competing in the upcoming Western Cape championships and the Nico Malan event, a number of players will be unavailable for key rugby fixtures in the early part of the season. This clash in schedules, coupled with the timing of the SA championships falling during the school holidays, means that the rugby teams will not be at full strength in the opening matches. It goes without saying, Outeniqua are big on athletics!
While this overlap will affect the initial weeks of the season, the long-term outlook for Outeniqua rugby is bright. The school has made significant progress in recent years, building a strong foundation for future success. The u14, u15, and u16 age groups are already showing impressive potential, with many players expected to rise through the ranks in the coming seasons. The u15 and u16 groups, in particular, have demonstrated exceptional skill and depth, bolstered by an influx of new talent.
As the rugby season progresses and the athletics events conclude, Outeniqua will begin to showcase its full strength. With a solid development programme in place, the future of Outeniqua Rugby looks promising, and the school is set to emerge as a competitive force in the years to come.
