Baby Boks team to face Wales at JWC 2013

The Baby Boks will face Wales under-20 in the first semi-final of the IRB Junior Rugby Championship being held in France. Kickoff is at 18:15 on Tuesday 18 June 2013. The winners of this game will meet the winners of the England versus New Zealand semi on 23 June. The second game will also be played later on the same evening at 20:45. Both matches will be televised on Supersport.

There are numerous changes to the SA matchday 22 that struggled to beat France in the last pool match. Significantly Affies old boy Luan de Bruin returns at tighthead after a suspension and Handré Pollard shifts back to inside centre to make way for Robert du Preez at flyhalf. Stefan Ungerer also comes in at scrumhalf in place of junior Sharks teammate Hanco Venter. Justin Geduld has recovered from a knee injury and he along with Kwagga Smith who replaces the injured Jannes Kirsten, will both be on the bench. Kirsten was replaced in the squad by Monnas old boy Jannie Stander.

@Predator: we were ridiculously poor, our best player was a 90kg flanker who came of the bench, no heart, nothing there at all

The worldwide media tells us that the 15 and 10 of the Welsh are very good and solid under the ball and on attack,…..and what do we do,….we kick the senseless high ball over and over into their hands,…maybe there is no media where Dawie and his management team stays. BAD mistake by the ref on awarding their try,..but we didn’t deserve to win anyway. The scrumming was ,………………sorry I got no words!!

@Muzi: I agree that R DuPreez hasn’t set the field alight yet but let me say he is a great Fly half. Just give him a chance.

@Queenian: yeah, the Dells have been part of the some special events at Queen’s. Allan’s grandfather played for 1st XV in 100th year celebration match in 1958 against St Andrew’s. I think Allan is named after him. Old Uncle Steve played in the 1st XV in the 125th against Dale if am not mistaken in 1983. Then Chubby played for 1st XV in 2008 at the sesquicentinial celebrations against Dale, the youngster of the 1st XV at the time, he was still 16.

Something quite special and probably unique to the Dell family in Queen’s history. Who knows 20 years from now when Queen’s are at 175. Marcus or Allan’s sons might be wearing the white jersey for Queen’s.

@Queenian: All good things originate from the Eastern Cape…I lived in Humansdorp for 6 years from ’66-’72…Was in Cape st Francis this weekend at by Brother-in-law’s place…been going there off-and-on since those days!

@Grasshopper: @Ludz: Was with Allan Dell a few months ago at he,s dad place and he weighed in at 109.36 kg,s so not that light he is quiet tall so I am sure by the age of 24 or so he will be 120 kg although some of this countries best scrumming props have only weighed just over 100 kgs.

Ye he was born in Humansdorp those were the days when me and his dad were big drinkers in St Francis bay his dad was building houses there at the time which did not work out so he moved back to Queenstown. The Dell family are farmers from the Colesburg area and have always been at Queens.

@Grasshopper: yeah, I think at some point when he’s an established senior, he’ll captain the Sharks. He was a great leader at Queen’s

@Grasshopper: I can’t seem to recall the game you refer, but ya, he does need a bit more bulk, he plays like an extra loosie, his technique has always been good in the scrums, just needs a couple more kilos to back it up. Apart from that, I think he’s okay.

@Ludz: I can’t remember the game but he was battling, but that could have been down to the others in the front row and his lock/flank. I’m sure he is very good but does need to bulk up a bit circa 5 to 10kg…

@Grasshopper: What are you on about now Mr Hopper, thought we were reffering to Allan being in reverse in the scrums last year for Baby Boks?

Anyway Allan will be okay sir, he already made his Currie Cup debut last year ahead of Nic Schonert, Danie Mienie and Maks van Dyk. He was 4th choice prop behind the main 3 at the Sharks in Super Rugby. The faith should atleast mean that he’s ready for senior rugby despite his weight which will come as well

@beet: yeah but NZ is a Southern Hemisphere side where the scrum is just a restart. Northern Hemisphere sides are the ones to judge your scrummaging against, especially France and England. Look at the Bulls, very weak in the scrums. Gone are the days when Bok scrums dominated opponents, we even go back against Australia these days…

@pongola: if Dell is 112kg then I must be 140kg! Anyway, hope he does well and comes through the ranks. Wasn’t aware he was from Humansdorp, I was there today. I wonder why he never went to Grey PE or Nico Malan

Ja definitely during last years final vs NZ we had the upperhand in the scrums. Maks and Steven Kitshoff up front for us. Big Paul Willemse adding much strength at lock.

The 2012 game against England was a scrumming nightmare for the most part. Maks came on a steadied the ship.

I still think that our junior rugby system is partly to blame. Not enough opportunities available for more youngsters to show their talents and poor scrumming props are not shown up in the small domestic u19 compo that runs from July to October every year.

@Ludz: I’m aware of technique but Dell will need to bulk up if he wants to play Sharks at senior level. I was shocked how small he was. Maybe strong but up against a 130kg beast he will get eaten….hooker is probably a better option….

@Grasshopper: the only time the scrum was in reverse last year was when Kebble was at tighthead against England, don’t remember any other time. So enlighten me when it was in reverse with Allan there. Anyway size isn’t always a factor. Technique sir

@GreenBlooded: Marne isn’t in the squad as a loosehead, he’s a tighthead and at tighthead Luan is the better option.

@pongola: huh! The baby Boks were also in turbo reverse last year with Kebble, Dell etc. Maks was ok and made up for it in the loose. Saw Dell the other day, can’t be more than 100kg, very small for a prop. Marne is certainly not the best or even 2nd best tight head scrummager in SA, but he could be as he as all the attributes…

@grasshopper would have liked it more if his 100m time is 40 sec but he can stand his man in the scrums. somewhere in south africa there must be very good prop still eligble dawie and co must get of there arses and search for player not just rely on the big unions to do their scouting for them.
think dawie wishes he had dell and van dyk still with him they demolished new zealand in the scrums and i think this times it will be our turn.

@Grasshopper: Marne is certainly a better scrummager than Beerwinkel. Can’t understand that selection. Marne at least gets the scrum going forward when he comes on.

Agree with you he also has a very high work rate…..but Marvin Orie needs to eat more pap and vleis…perhaps our traditional African juice Mageu  will also do the trick.
That lazy Herbst is supposed to be our onforcer with the way he’s playing I think he’s in due a red card.

What surprises me is Dawie is a front row veteran surely that is the area he knows about and where we should be good. It seems only our backs are good so well done Brendan Venter. About Marne, he did play poorly and has lost some weight, mostly puppy fat. I reckon if he worked with Os or BJ Botha for a bit he could be very good. Perfect height for a tight head and quick around the park….

@Muzi: I reckon Orrie is a decent kingpin in the lineout, but offers little elsewhere. I still think he would’ve shown a little more energy than Visser does around the park. Herbst tries, but has no skill

    @Ludz:
Well I hope Du Preez makes me eat some humble pie  …in the first two games he was solid but very predicable….Pollard is a threat in the flyhalf channel.
Rohan was a beast on defence, well let’s hope Beerwinkel can raise his game.
I’ve given up hope with Irne Herbst and Dennis Visser they might have it easy against Wales but I would wantn’t want the both of them in the engine room for the Bulls senior side…piss poor.
The samething happened to Orie he got no game time at all in the 2012 JWC.
I don’t even rate him that highly….what on earth did Meyer see in this guy forget about the line out skills….he lacks mongrel and weight.

@Muzi: ya Rohan didn’t do much though, so I think it’s justified to play Pollie at 12 and Robert du Preez hasn’t really dissapointed. To be fair to Beerwinkel, nothing much between the props, all are pretty poor to be honest. I also feel for Mahuza hey, the guy deserves better than that.

Ag noooo man  ….Handre Pollard should have stayed at flyhalf….he’s a liability on defence at inside centre that’s why his confidence is low….pity Rohan got axed.
Ja..ja..ja….Du Preez is ok……but nothing special IMHO.
I see quota Beerwinkel is back in the starting line up..well it makes perfect sense I mean he can also kick for poles :-| ….another turbo reverse scrum on the way.
Geez I’d be super pissed off!!! if I was Sylvian Mahuza poor guy hasn’t played at all.
