Congratulations Menlo! Good start to the season all teams.
Menlo 0/19A slow start in their season opener but deserved winners at the end.

Impressive win by Noord-Heuwel and with EG Jansen two early Noordvaal teams to watch out for.

If the results are correct I think Diamantveld’s 0/14A was the heroes at the school today taking the win against Affies … certainly one for the books.

If we are being honest, any EC co-ed beating one of the 3 Border traditional schools is a “surprise”. Even if the co-ed happens to be better that particular day/year.

Perhaps the Border locals saw it coming but on a national scale Cambridge beating Dale is surprise.
In my personal dealings, the Dale guys always seem to be keen and love the rugby input while Cambridge gives the impression that they are not so serious about rugby.

In 2022, as u16A’s this Cambridge age group beat Dale by the same score line at the same venue. Hopefully we can at least have a decent season. The boys must remain focused and humble

Can’t wait for QC vs Pearson at Graeme Rugby Day, hear Pearson is on great form and have a solid side. Queen’s was rusty against Stirling in the first half which is valid since it’s their first game but came alive in the 2nd half to put away stirling with ease. Jed Stone is a beast!

20 point gap doesn’t sound like it was a real game…Garsfontein would put a margin of 40+ on Boys High if it wasn’t ‘chukkahs’.

Pretoria Boys would’ve lost against Garsfontein whether chukkas or official game, whether this Saturday or a Wednesday in 3 weeks, whether played in Garsfontein or their headmaster’s backyard. A 20 pt gap sounds about accurate too lol.

Was an unofficial game basically but PBHS called it chukkas and the games throughout the day were called chukkas. The games were played relatively normal though, and had a scoreline and conversions and everything hence why the chukkas was in inverted commas 👀

I have no idea why that’s the case unfortunately, been the same way with Garsfontein playing boys high away 3 years in a row. Pbhs didn’t look too bad but made a lot of errors, might be the lack of match fitness and I’m sure they’ll be sharper this coming weekend after getting some game time in. They ran the U16’s very close this year. I’ve got faith in the boys and I expect Jeppe to be a firm test for the 1st XV and for the under 14 boys.

I wonder why Wednesday’s game is in Garsfontein again this year? We then have Pretoria Boys High on Saturday in Johannesburg for our first official game of the season.
How’s your feeling for Wednesday and how do Boys High look? If I judge from their 1st, 2nd and u16A teams from last year, I think they’ll struggle this year?

Garsies “won” the “chukkas” game 22-0, looked a little rusty but gave a few opportunities to some bench players in the 2nd half. Garsies under 14s really really impressive especially the B team which shows the depth this year. Looking forward to a challenging Jeppe side on Wednesday and the season ahead

I think for the last 2 years they’ve played each other as a “trial game” and PBHS have not worn their candies jerseys for either of the 2 games, yet it was still full on contact games. Would be a shame if this year is any different imo.

I heard that there is some interest as to why Selborne aren’t attending the Grey High Rugby Festival this year… the school has honored their annual fixture with Grey Kollege the weekend leading into the Grey High Festival. It was the only date that Selborne could secure with Grey Kollege. This derby allows Selborne to participate not only in rugby but all the winter activities that both school’s offer.

I was shocked when I heard Selborne were not going play at Grens fest. From what I have been told by my rugby colleagues is that it was going to be Selborne vs Hudson, and then Selborne pulled out. Whatever the reason is Graeme are going to be up for taking a big scalp 2 weeks from now, with Graeme rugby’s massive improvement I honestly think it will be 50/50 as to who are the favourites.

Yeah word is that Selborne feel they are not ready for prepared enough for rugby this weekend.
Next weekend might be a tough one for Selborne. They take on the hosts Graeme, who by then would have one competitive match under the belt.
For Selborne in prep for Graeme, a first hit-out in EL, maybe against a tier-2 school at Grens Fest might not have been a bad thing at all.

EGJansen vs Kempton Park. The two arch rivals from the East Rand taking each other on in the 01st game of the season in the NWU skolereeks. Kempies Rugby on its way up again, especially the JNR teams. Might be some tough and close encounters, although there is much talk and expectation for the EGJ 1st team of 2024. Going be interesting to see how all the games perform and if the power is shifting back to Kempies on the East Rand. EGJ boys athletics team in 2024 was really far behind Kempies

    Goeie more Beet

Makes sense, and good exposure on both occasions vs Kwaggad and KES.

Why not then step out if the Puk Prestige tournament and give another school a shot, and arrange bigger fixtures for all the rugby teams Pre Season.

Im sure that is the route that Garsfontein took around 2014, they dominated the Puk Prestige tournament and decided to grow the rugby program elsewhere

Nories will effectively be looking for 23 extra players in their senior age group to be able to make their 3rd team. At this stage they seem quite confident about fielding a 3rd XV. It’s probably much easier for most schools to find the numbers early on in the season before injuries set in.
Nories also have a NWU Prestige midweek game against Heidelberg Volkies in which they are considering a similar approach with their 2nds filling in while the 1st stage fresh for the high profile match against KES, which in a count back might be as close to a Lions region title decider as we get.

This is interesting. A few points here that cross my mind.
    – how many open teams can NH have ? 4 maybe 5 if they pull some cricket and hockey players in for a match
    – so the 2/3 will play as 1st, and 3/4 will play as 2nd. Meaning that Hugenote 3rd team won’t have a fixture ? Yes, Hugenote 3rd team will get the points, but isn’t the goal of this Pre season tournament to give all the teams a fixture ? NH is now dropping Hugenote 3rd to play in a fixture 1500km away with no support. This might easily be the best fixture of the year on Hugenote Calendar to measure against Pool A school.
    – NH risk the chance of losing all open team matches and points, might cost Rugby or even School with Grand total at the end of the tournament.
    – has NH rugby picked up so much, or has Hugenote rugby weakened so much ?
    – is the Puk Prestige tournament still valid with enough power vs. power fixtures ?
    – if NH can disrespect a Top 6 (Puk Prestige ranking) school like this, should they not maybe withdraw from it and give another growing school the opportunity to play in it.
    – can NH not benefit more from playing stronger pre season fixtures ?

Apart from the hosts Porterville and probably junior teams from HJS and Durbies, I have no idea who else will be in action over that weekend.

    PORTERVILLE EVENT IS A 5-STAR

    @Kaya 85 (Comment #2)
So apparently this annual weekend event at Porterville is something really special in terms of the food, atmosphere and hospitality.
Last year Durbies accounted for one of the biggest surprise results of the season when they beat Boishaai by a single point at Porterville.
This year I’m afraid it will be a very different story if Durbies trial run against Paul Roos last week is anything to go by. It was one way traffic with PRG raking up a high score in next to no time. Although Boishaai are not at highly rated at PRG heading into the 2024 season, they are pretty much expected to be right up there in one of the higher ranking positions. Add what happened last year and it seems like a score margin North of 50-points may be on the cards.

Thank you for drawing my attention to this. I thought it was a mistake, with the NWU match date having changed. But it turns out Nories will send their 1st XV and reserves to George to play in the Outeniqua 1st XV festival. Meanwhile the Nories 2nd/3rd team travel as a 1st XV to Springs to take on Hugenote. One cannot really reclassify the Nories team playing at Hugenote because each pool match in the NWU Prestige counts towards the seedings for the quarterfinals. Once back from George the Nories 1sts will play the remaining matches in the NWU Prestige
