@KES Oldboy: I think it’s for 1 tour a year for the lower teams, that’s the main attraction. The Jeppe vs Westville fixture sounded great.

@Grasshopper: I’m not sure why Glenwood would need/want a fixture Vs the Gauteng schools. Natal have lots of competitive derbies with all of College, Westville, Northwood, DHS, Glenwood, Michaelhouse, Hilton & Kearsney all able to put out lots of teams & have competitive games. Unfortunately in Gauteng it’s only KES, PBHS & Jeppe. The private schools & Parktown are very weak & have few teams (St Johns have 16 teams but still need to improve their rugby).

@kantako: Ah yes, just in Mackeurtan Avenue!
Yes, its great to see. The Rugby in particular should never have fallen away as it did, but glad its competing again after all these years. The cricket and hockey are right up there in KZN and SA and the rugby pipeline is fairly strong now. Some good juniours coming through again. Its a very competitive market though on the rugby front and some schools are still ahead right now at 1st team level, like Hilton, Mhouse, DHS, MBC…but hope they can build a really competitive 1st team again like they did in 2019 and 2020 (before Covid struck).

Monnas vs Helpmekaar gaan die Battle of the Driving Maul wees.

You guys have made me excited about the knights, I will be watching them more closely now. Ive been to the school a few times, beautiful. Had my first Wakaberry as a Jo’burger just around the corner from the school.

@Skywalker: Agreed. When I lived in Ballito I was looking at Northwood as my first choice for my boy, mainly because of it’s location and because of it’s Gov Boys school ethos. Mr Jordan was OK back in the day. Northwood always had huge numbers, I think only Pinetown had more in the 90s, around 1,400 boys. Not sure now. Northwood have recruited some great coaches and teachers from Glenwood and other schools, they are in a good position across all sports. I always remember the surfing battles between Northwood, DHS, Glenwood, Westville and George Campbell. Northwood was always the beach-bum school of my era. Having OBs like Craig Davidson, Hugh Reece-Edwards etc has helped. Ballito is in dire need of a proper old school Model C school and fewer of these new age schools, which I don’t like….

@kantako: The wheel turns…Great to see after many years of the reverse. To be fair Northwoods school location has always been in a good area, and they have many local feeder primary schools. From Umdloti to Riverside they are the closest all boys high school in the area. They benfitted for a while, but the school got slack, poor leadership, and other schools simply upping the ante saw them fall out of favour. Unfortunately all boys schools get judged on rugby results (still the case mostly), and so even if their hockey was strong for example, the rugby losses impacted community support and the image of the school. It’s taken time to build and recover and now reach new heights, but again, that would not have happened if the school wasnt in a good place, with good new leadership, good coaches, teachers etc. Facilities then get upgraded and old boys support more, and and and…So yes they are benfitting from the North Coast migration in some way, but they always were in that pocket. If the school was where it was 15 years ago, they would not be attracting the boys they are, even if they lived round the corner.

@KES Oldboy: Ah OK, relatively close then which is good. Seems they have got a good u14 bunch which they need to retain and nurture. Always loved our interactions with PBHS and KES boys in the past. I think the English Model-C schools are all pretty similar, hence the good relations. Wish Glenwood had a fixture vs KES, PBHS, Jeppe or Parktown down the line. Also, now about 18 teams. I remember when we could put out 25 plus, those days are gone…

@Kaya 85: en sommer @ Kantako. I hope you guys are well!

Yes the play offs in all divisions will be helluva exciting! Can’t wait either!

In daai orde.

    Mooi dag manne

@Tang: Hi Tang. A very close game. Result was in doubt right until the end. At one stage it looked like KES would run away with it as they lead 29–11 early in the 2nd half. But PBHS can back & when they scored with 8 minutes to play & our SA Schools hooker was binned for the last 10 minutes we were in trouble only leading by 6. We got a late penalty which sealed it. I know that PBHS were missing a couple of stars through injury (10 & 8 I think). So I think they actually did very well. It was a good game.

Mooi dag!

@kantako: Ah lekker. I remember Glenwood playing Ermelo a few times in the 90’s in pre-seasons. Super tough games. To show our level then we beat the Grey Cherries 14-10 in 1992 in Kokstad…also in 92, we lost 3-10 to Paarl Boys captained by Corne Krige, at home in an Ascension Festival. I was there, one of the highlights of my school life, aged 13 watching these huge beasts play. We had a massive front row, around 120kg per prop. They then played Boishaai again in the July on a Cape Tour and got hammered 7-34. On that tour they lost to Wynberg 0-12, beat Grey PE 8-7 and lost to Muir College 8-13. Great times!

@kantako: Well I wouldn’t say Glenwood was a poor rugby school, just battled in the mid 90s with a head not really focused on rugby. Glenwood has played since 1910, officially from 1915 against Hilton. Our overall win percentage vs KZN opposition is around 56%, having played over 1,000 games in that time at 1st team level. Age of school usually correlates to historic dominance as it takes newer schools a while to catch up. This is the order in KZN since rugby started, College, Hilton, Michaelhouse, DHS, Glenwood, St Charles, Kearsney, Port Natal, Westville, Northwood, Voortrekker, St Henrys, Grosvenor, Pinetown…..so we are mid pack. We’ve had some great sides over the year, my uncle’s side in 65 was unbeaten locally and had 8x Natal reps that year. In 79, we had the SA schools captain, Derek La Marque……we have a decent number of Boks too for a soutie school. Also, some really famous Old Boys like Gordon Murray (auto design), Greg Nicol (hockey) & Kevin Curran (tennis). In fact, we have over 150 international reps….me are no start-up mickey mouse school…and always been known for big packs of forwards. We only really started to get big Afrikaans boys when Sean Erasmus was the coach and the school recruited from Pretoria. Those days are well gone now so we have to rely on local talent from a mainly Bluff, South Coast and Queensburgh feeder area, tough. For a school like ours we definitely do punch above our weight…..in the past, good solid middleclass families….with the edge coming from kids or tougher backgrounds (railway families) etc

@Grasshopper: thanks for the background. I started following Glenwood from around 2008. And then I thought they were the really strong KZN school with some big Afrikaans boys.

I always knew College was good, and Kearsney and House. Hilton got the money as well and big coaching staff, and the last decade I thought Westville is coming strong especially with Jeremy McClaren.

I never knew Glenwood was a poor rugby school. But it makes sense as the area around them is falling apart like you say, the school ground still good but if you look at the other KZN schools they are absolutely stunning. NORTH COAST now doing good for Northwood.

Its a shame the South Coast has gone to shit with crime etc, I remember school tours at Margate and even Veldskool in Glenmore. Good days

Two interesting results from the EC is Framesby beating Grey and, to me, the best win of the weekend is Nico Malan beating Kingswood. Kingswood has only lost to Helpmekaar this season and the NM win was unexpected. Congrats to the boys and to the great work done by the coaches Jaco Dames and Tiaan Dorfling.

    @kantako: Glenwood vs Northwood in the 90s;

    1990 – Drew 15-15
    1991 – Lost 0-9
    1992 – Won 13-11
    1993 – Lost 5-12
    1994 – Lost 12-13
    1995 – Lost 18-23
    1996 – Lost 12-18
    1997 – Drew 12-12
    1998 – Won 26-3
    1999 – Won 22-7 & Won 18-15

As you can see, it was a tough mid 90s and only from 98 did we start to win regularly. Northwood now have a better feeder area, Ballito etc so will be difficult to keep up with as Glenwood is in a area in severe decline….

@kantako: Dude, in the 90’s we could hardly win a game at 1st team level, even vs Northwood. Games across the board have always been close. Prior to 1990, Northwood was two schools, Northlands and Beachwood. Both those schools didn’t have great records vs Glenwood as 1st team level. Glenwood has always been around average across the board. College is the benchmark in the province for all teams.

It was a big day for Parktown yesterday. Mr Andrew van Zyl stepped down as the head 1st XV coach after 15 years of service. A loyal servant to the school and a true rugby man. All the best to him as he continues in his post as deputy headmaster at the school. Arise!

Well done College, a momentous occasion winning in Pretoria op die plaas. Westville did it a few years ago. I genuinely think KZN Sharks would have beaten the Bulls at Craven Week. The age group results were a little more concerning. Also, the huge gap across the board is a sign that Affies is at another level, over 1,000 points scored vs College! I am very happy with the improvement of Glenwood age group results vs Northwood, much closer and better. It’s not all doom and gloom for the next 5 years. Certainly not expecting an Top 30 sides but a good solid 30 to 50 in SA ranking is OK. Also, what counts to a Glenwood OB is the derby vs DHS, that must come back……even though DHS are likely to win easily for a few years….

Wow big result from Maritzburg College. After battling Grey College for one half earlier in the season they really kept up the intensity throughout the whole match on this occasion. Simple effective line outs, to number 2 and 4 jumpers- no overcomplicated throws to the back, a strong driving maul and power scrum. Short passes to big ball carriers and a very low error count. Execution was very similar to a typical Affies gameplan actually. A Natal school needed a win against one of the big boys – DHS pushed Affies and Paul Roos close but College served up the goods today – Well Done! That will be a festive bus ride home.

Gents, Deon, this is a schoolboy rugby blog..I am very interested in what bloggers think about Paarl Gym’s chances on Saturday against Outeniqua. I personally think that if Outeniqua play to their potential we have very little chance of winning but I am driving down to watch the game and support my beloved alma mater. I am also very interested in what my Boishaai friends think will happen on 5 August. We desperately need a win against the old foe because our old boys are impatient and irrational. I love schoolboy rugby! I love this blog when we talk schoolboy rugby. Let’s stick to that please. Deon, please let’s refrain from deviating from the intended subject matter. And quite frankly, let’s treat each other with dignity and respect. Beet – it’s time to use some red cards and enforce the House Rules,,,

Look, Deon makes a valid point, because when Milner and his so-called kindergarten ran the Transvaal after the Anglo-Boer SA War, they established English medium schools including King Edward VII in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Potchefstroom. I’m not sure if KES was called KES at the beginning, but naming it after the British monarch was certainly a ‘colonial’ move, and was triumphalist, to emphasize British superiority and the British colony. It remains as a name,a fact of history, I don’t think anyone at a school like has had an iota of allegiance to that king for the last 75 years or more. But the name isn’t currently offensive to enough people to demand a change. But that said, look at Joburg now…they’ve decolonised the $#!+ out of it…

Please beet, my one great grandparent and my family was murdered by the Nazis in concentration camps in Germany and we do not name schools after Hitler. My other great grandmother and 5 kids were murdered by King Edward 7 in concentration camps in SA. What is the difference? Can we ban the glorification of Rdward in KES from SBR blog? @Slam: Why is it unnecessary? I mean there is no more HF Verwoerd Hoërskool, DF Malan HS is an issue, so is HS Jan van Riebeeck, and no more Verwoerdburg, yet names of much “worse” truly genocidal murderers and racists like this racist genocidal Edward and of segregationists like Shepstone, who by the way wrote every Apartheid law except the petty ones, just the way the English operated, can be mentioned here as if everything is ok, despite my family history? Creepy stuff. The English completely refused black children any state education. I mean, until 1953 less than 10% received an average of 2 years Mission education. Yet, we still read about Verwoerd….??? I really wish beet/SBRB would not mention schools named after these racists and murderers. No more Edward, KES etc/ I am too woke for racism.
