CONTACT SPORTS SUSPENDED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT IN SCHOOLS
The Council of Education Ministers has taken a decision to suspend all contact sports in schools with immediate effect. The decision was taken in a virtual meeting held this morning.
Non-contact sport training in schools can continue provided that all social distancing, hygiene and safety measures are observed and that there is no physical contact between participants during training.
In 2021, after the reopening of schools and consultations with education stakeholders, the DBE gazetted directions allowing non-contact sport, sports related activities and school-based art and cultural activities to resume without spectators, subject to adherence of safety measure.
Further, on 12th February 2012, Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga gazetted directions on school sports and extra mural activities, non-contact sport, sports related activities and school-based art and cultural activities to resume subject to health and safety protocols. During the last week of Term 1, school sports activity related COVID-19 outbreaks in Gauteng Province were reported and have been gradually increasing in Term 2.
It is evident that despite following the protocols as guided by the Directions on extramural activities and Standard Operating Procedure on the prevention, containment and management of COVID-19 in schools, contact sports events still contribute to the spread of COVID-19.
Following the school sports activities related COVID-19 outbreaks in Gauteng and general rise of cases in communities across the country, the Outbreak Response Team (ORT) said that the risk was high when engaged in close-contact sports, especially with people who did not live together.
In this regard, all sporting activities have been suspended with immediate effect until the clusters outbreak is subsequently over with no further cases reported including the preparatory school sport. The Department will continue to monitor the situation. A government gazette will be issued with the notice in the coming days.
ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF BASIC EDUCATION

@kantako: The bottom line is that they are not neighbours, but perhaps you specifically chose your words for maximum inflammatory effect?

I take your point that they recruit from the West Rand, but their bus routes are spread out over most of Gauteng – i.e. Springs, Germiston, Bryanston, Fourways, Roodepoort, etc, etc. Clearly, the immediate area around the school does not produce many potential Afrikaans private school candidates, so they must spread the net far and wide. Thus, singling out Noories seems a bit disingenuous to me, or are you going to call Drostdy neighbours of Garsfontein because the latter recruit some pupils from the Boland?

@Vleis: so does Helpies not run a shuttle service from right in front if MV and right in front of NH ? Please do read before commenting, it is all about marketing value my friend. Neighbouring schools means that they target the same primary school kids, well MV and NH target kids in their town only, helpies target kids from Heidelberg to Meyerton, Springs to Boksburg, Alberton to Krugersdorp. Have I missed any area ?

I just checked I still dont see any statement on Helpies school website nor fb page about the schooling being closed due to Covid or that they have cancelled all sport due to Covid, like all the proper rugby schools did last week on social media. So yes, its all about stopping their losing streak since 2019. At least they wont lose this weekend.

@tzavosky: This is all I have.

Niemand meer ontsteld as ek nie, glo my.

@tzavosky: Helpmekaar needs help so they withdrew às they are on a terrible losing streak and already lost to neighbouring MV, so another loss to neighbouring Noories will be very bad for their marketing as they tell gr7 boys every year how bad those neighbouring schools are, the same principal who in last week made a comment on their fb page that school will continue as normal and parents should stay calm, and that each individual will be treated and even if a kid is positive he will still write exam at school in isolation, this same principal has now stopped the Virsekerbeker match as Helpies last won a match in the semi final of 2019.

I also remember seeing on the news that this same principal opened the school earlier this year then he was allowed and mr Lesufi and the media had to personally close down the school again, but now they follow protocol?

Maybe @beet can give us more info on how the match has been cancelled as their is no communication of the cancellation on any social media platform 🤔.

… waiting as the DBE, is meeting either today or tomorrow with regards to Contact sports at school level.
My feeling is most of the schools have being incredibly responsible in their actions by already curtailing hockey and rugby, for a few weeks.
I think we would all be extremely disappointed if the DBE, tarred all with the same brush and made a decision stopping school boy contact sport for the foreseeable future.
It would be a great pity and fairly short sighted.
I think they need to make decisions on an individual basis and in consultation with the schools affected.

The Department of Education decision seems like a forgone conclusion. I wonder if there will be time for a return to school rugby this year or if this will be it for 2021.

I still think that as an interim measure schools should be reorganised into smaller leagues to compete. In that way sports still goes ahead while the risk of spreading the virus is marginalised to an extent.
