The Maritzburg College 1st XV made an eleventh hour decision to join their other teams at the Fichardtpark Rugby Festival in Bloemfontein after their initial plans to travel to Krugersdorp were derailed.
It paid dividends as the team completed a hectic unbeaten three matches in four days schedule against three recognised opponents on the schoolboy rugby circuit.
The results were:
Voortrekker (Beth) 35 – 17
Diamantveld 26 -8
Duineveld 24 -5
Amongst the positives to emerge was the execution speed of their backline play. Several players clocked up the metres with carries and their finishing quality was what ultimately set them apart from their rivals.
On attack the most pleasing performance was delivered outside centre Lusanda Mtshali who used his pace and power to express himself as a potent threat. The College prefect’s combination with rated big and versatile under-17 youngster Liam Prinsloo could prove very useful in shaping the Red, Black, White’s fortunes this year.
@Asha Amazambane: Well done to Maritzburg on these results. They are a well drilled team. With Hein Kriek and the other coaches there they have great rugby minds between them.
The best of luck to College this weekend against DHS will be an interesting match to see.
Nice one, College – some very promising results. It will be terrific to again see the Red-Black-White in action on Goldstone’s. Good luck against DHS next week in Durban.
