Jeppe rugby coaches shine in the classroom

Balance still matters at Jeppe High School for Boys – it’s not just about what happens on the rugby field.

In a refreshing twist, 1st XV rugby coach Drikus Venter and director of rugby Carl Spilhaus have both been recognised for their work in the classroom at the Eastern District award ceremony — Venter as the top Mathematical Literacy teacher and Spilhaus as the leading History teacher. It’s not something you often hear about at the big rugby high schools these days.

In an era where schoolboy rugby can feel all-consuming, Jeppe’s approach is worth celebrating.

When I was at Jeppe, Mr Venter taught both Maths Lit and Pure Maths – he’s a really smart guy. I wonder if since taking the reigns as 1st XV coach, he had to sacrifice the latter to free up some of his time, but what I did want to say is that he has a very laissez faire teaching approach, very popular with the Maths Lit guys, and well, not an approach that was too popular with the Pure Maths guys lol.
Mr Spilhaus came in my matric year, didn’t get much of a chance if any at all to interact with him.
