Welkom Gim quick out of the blocks – big win against Menlo

Welkom Gim has registered the first sit up and take notice result of the 2020 season via a 43-7 win against a Menlopark, the 2019 Virsekerbeker Cup winners with a 2020 1st XV team that are expected to be reasonably competitive this season.

It was not that long ago that Gimmies seemed like a non-factor in national schoolboy rugby circles. Then in  2015 when they made the mainstream news. This was due to Hentie Cilliers Hoërskool of Virginia in the Free State obtaining a favourable court decision to prevent two of their players from moving to Welkom Gim. That year symbolised the passing of the baton  from Hentie Cilliers who had stood out as the Griffons region’s flagship team, to Welkom Gim. The latter have not looked back since. Dominating their region as five fairly consistent strong performing seasons  followed. During this period their national ranking hovered between 19th and 29th, helping to place them firmly on the SBR map. The good results has effectively meant they are the 14th best team in SA over those same past five seasons from 2015-2019 and definitely one of the most improved school 1st XV’s in the country in this period.

@Smallies: Dit is reg, indien hulle op Skool is. Ek wonder wat is die uitwerking van SARU se besluit om die 0/19 CB te stop te doen met hoeveel post matrieks daar oral in SA in omloop is.
