Bulls u18 teams for trials against Lions

The Bulls have named two under-18 teams to take on their Lions counterparts next Tuesday at Loftus, as part of selection process and preparations for the Craven Week and Academy Weeks for 2013. Of the 30 starters selected 14 have Bulls under-18 representation experience brought forward from 2012. Jurie Linde, Justin Phillips and Abongile Nonkontwana played SA Schools in 2012. Nonkontwana was a unique case because he did not attend Craven Week, going to Academy Week instead. He made the SA Schools team as a result of a new policy that came into being last year that allowed selectors to look outside of the boundaries of Craven Week for suitable national under-18 representatives.

In terms of schools represented, it’s the usual suspects: Affies (8), Garsfontein (9), Centurion (4), Waterkloof (3), St Albans (3), Pretoria Boys High (2) and Wonderboom (1).

# BULLS u18 A-team SCHOOL 2012 REP # BULLS u18 B-team SCHOOL 2012 REP
1 Xander Van Wyk Waterkloof Academy Wk 1 Jonathan Valema Wonderboom Academy Wk
2 Vean Roodt Centurion Craven Wk 2 Francois Steyn Affies Craven Wk
3 WP Eloff Affies N/vaal u19 3 Johan Van Wyk Waterkloof Academy Wk
4 Abongile Nonkontwana St Alban’s Academy Wk 4 Hyron Andrews Garsfontein Craven Wk
5 RG Snyman Affies 5 Jason Jenkins St Albans
6 Ruan Townsend Pretoria BH 6 Jacques Oosthuizen Centurion
7 PJ Toerien Garsfontein 7 Michael De Waal Pretoria BH
8 Salmon Van Huyssteen Affies 8 Arne Van Rensburg Garsfontein
9 Ivan Van Zyl Affies 9 Justin Phillips Waterkloof Craven Wk
10 Juandre Pitzer Centurion 10 Jameel Warnick Garsfontein Academy Wk
11 Lyle Maart Garsfontein 11 George-Lee Erasmus Garsfontein Craven Wk
12 Franco Naude Garsfontein 12 Dawie Venter Affies
13 Jurie Linde Affies Craven Wk 13 Damian Hogg Centurion
14 Jose Shaw St Albans Academy Wk 14 Ethan Sias Garsfontein
15 Eduan Keyter Affies 15 Jade Solomons Garsfontein Academy Wk

Missing from the lineup is former Queens College player Aston Fortuin. Under a different set of circumstances the SA HP under-16 player would almost certainly have made the Border Craven Week team but presumably made the move to the Bulls region to keep his dreams of playing at Craven Week alive due to the rigid selection criteria of the Border Rugby Union.

@Ludz: The school he is at only plays 4 games for the season what a mess they were trying to move Jerry Dinquach as well i see but this time the New Headmaster got it sorted out so he is staying but has signed for the Bulls

Come final squad Fortuin will be there but now the talk of him moving back to Queens for Grade12 might have put a spanner in the works

It is going to be an interesting tussle between the number 9’s – Ivan van Zyl (Affies) and Justin Phillips (Waterkloof). van Zyl was excellent against Grey today and Phillips played SA Schools last year….

Doubt Aston is enjoying the enviroment up in Bulls, he made the choice though. He could’ve been making a difference in the Queen’s side and enjoying a regular season

@Hanswors: I know its 11/11 for Grant Khomo but was under the impression that CW is still 13/9 like in previous years.

Above are 30 Bulls players so 14 still to come on board to make the full compliment of 44.

@Hanswors: I was thinking the same thing..Does the 11//11 principle not apply to the Bulls?

Hierdie spanne gaan nog BAIE verander want as jy na die samestelling kyk dan tel ek net ongeveer 9 spelers van kleur in die 2 spanne saam en as ek dit nie mis het nie moet daar 22 wees.
