Relegation Table before the semifinals

Blog from 10 August 2019: The decision to hold the VB Cup semifinals while several top players were away on SA u18 international duty has proven to be controversial and strong feelings exist that it played into the hands of the underdogs – winners Helpmekaar and Menlopark, who will contest the Noordvaal’s premier cup competition title on Saturday 17 August 2019.
Blog from 03 Aug 2019 : Men-low to Men-high! What a turnaround one week can make. Menlopark were staring down a barrel after a defeat in Boksburg and then surprised all by beating Monnas to clinch the last semi-final berth. With Garsies minus five SA national representatives for that knockout match, the sky is the limit for the Parkies. In the other semi its Monnas vs Helpies. Helpies are officially on school holiday.
Blog from 27 July 2019
Pretoria based Menlopark’s season woes continued on Saturday 27 July 2019. Two years on, the once fantastic Menlo u16A team of 2017 now as the 1st XV core, were expected to mount a massive challenge for Noordvaal top honours in 2019, but literally saw their hopes of making the Virsekerbeker Cup playoffs in 2019 disintegrate as they went down 29-17 to a determined Jansies. In so doing, EG kept alive their own hopes of clinching that fourth and last semi-final spot. The Boksburg boys have to beat Krugersdorp’s Noordheuwel and EG will probably need a 4-try bonus from this match to stand any chance of seeing post-season action. With one round of regular season VB Cup action coming up, Menlo’s fate is still in their own hands as they head into next weekend in fourth place. However given their current form, their task of beating high-flying Wesranders Monument is a mammoth one. The school that appears to have the inside lane to the semifinals is fifth-placed Waterkloof from the Pretoria residential suburb. Kloof picked up a “doodsnikke” bonus-point fourth try in their defeat to Helpmekaar. Crucially that last try edges WK a single point ahead of EG on the log. So if WK can win this coming Saturday and claim another bonus point in the process, they should make it into the semis. Their task is not a straightforward one though. The assignment is away in Middelburg against the seventh placed Rooibulle. Garsfontein is very close to 100% guaranteed to top the log (really it’s only the weather that could stand in their way), as the Transvalia 1st XV have had a torrid time in the top league this time around. Monument and Helpmekaar have secured playoff berths already and will in all likelihood face each other one of the semi-finals. It will be a repeat of last year’s inaugural VB Cup new format final, which the Monnas Witbulle won. Monnas are under the super guidance of head coach Trophy van der Walt, sorry Tjaart van der Walt who has won the last four Noordvaal main cup titles in a row (under the sponsorship of Virseker and Beeld before that, and with Garsfontein before he joined Monnas). Helpmekaar heads into a very tricky patch in their season. This coming week is “Produksie Week” – aimed at fundraising themed activities at the private school, meaning very little time for rugby ahead of a month long end of school term holiday break starting on Thursday 01 August 2019 (remember they are a 3-term school). In other words, the business end of the VB Cup rugby season has to be completed by rugby boys who are on school holidays.
