Coach
Yes , just genuinely surprised as to what has happened , while I don’t expect them to come out with the exact reasons behind the decision i would be interested in what the thinking behind it was.
Perhaps just a case of having been their for so long , maybe they felt a change in direction or shake up was required.
Although difficult when he was arguably the best and most successful schoolboy hockey coach SA has ever had not to mention a pretty decent cricket coach as well.
Perhaps DHS could tempt him ?
@PaarlBok: Seker maar waar julle krieket uitslae is…
Ouch waars daai Maroon Pappa?
Noord-Vaal perspektief:
@Brum
Maybe the school should be making a public statement about this as I believe he has coached the hockey since sometime in the early 1980’s, and cricket since early 1990’s. If I read the facebook and twitter comments from all around South Africa, there are a heap of people connected with school sport, as well as ex-players of his who are astounded let alone appalled at his dismissal.
@ Westers- I am pleased about the lineouts which were woeful against Kearsney at KP and are such an important part of the game.I spoke to one of the locks fathers the night before and he mentioned that the game at KP was his son’s first hit out and so improvement was to be expected. Also at KP I sat at the southern end of the stand and was able to compare the defensive alignment of Kearsney and Westville in the red zone.With Westville hot on attack the defensive line of Kearsney came up as straight as an arrow and the first point of contact was uncompromising with the Westville ball carrier being knocked back. The contrast with Westville could not have been greater with individuals coming out the line and slipping first tackles.This Kearsney TEAM is starting to be known for its commitment to one another rather than the DOOP show and the rewards will grow. GW well very talented might be too inexperienced to stay with them.
@GreenBlooded, I notice on the Westville fixture list they have dropped KZN Development as a fixture. This is a wise move given the scores in the past. Hopefully they will use the Development teams as fillers when playing some of the schools with fewer teams. That way the boys in the C, D and E teams might not miss out on games when staggers are in place and the Development teams can develop. Even more so now that Westville and Glenwood don’t play each other. The fillers against Glenwood and College have served the boys well in the past in terms of getting valuable game time against equal opposition.
Putting the 1sts, 2nds and A teams aside, Westville plays 11 fixtures in the season. Of the opposition it is likely that only College, KES and Pretoria Boys will field an equal number of teams. The other 8 weekends will require varying numbers of fillers to be arranged which often doesn’t happen. No wonder so many boys give up rugby in the later years of school.
@Westers: Agree 100%. Nothing positive comes from massive scorelines – games should be called when it becomes a clear non-contest. As for the development sides, one has to wonder exactly what is being developed when they are sent like lambs to the slaughter. They should be playing the tier 2 schools until they can compete. Other than the re-start kicker, nothing is being ‘developed’ by fixtures like this.
On the same note, I am disappointed to see that the Kearsney Festival have done away with the classic primary school matches between the top primary schools – these were always good value during the lunchtime break with the likes of Highbury, Glenwood Prep, DPHS, Westville etc providing some good match-ups. Now it will be 3 of the top primary schools against the Development side which I am guessing will end up with cricket scores as well. My guess is that this wasn’t the wish of the tourney organisers and perhaps political pressure was brought to bear. Also, they have been moved to the early morning slot which means we can get there a little bit later. Alround – not a positive change for the festival.
@Playa: Nico Maln will be quite good this year dont read to much into the result i have heard that Oudtshoorn are quite weak this year.
Nico Malan-Oudtshorrn score has me speechless!!!!WOW!WOW!WOW!
@star, When opposition run at them they always look short on numbers in the backline. A loose pass when they should have been sealing the game led to a 7 point intercept try that kept the game close for the last 5 minutes. Lineouts were also a big improvement on Wednesday. Hopefully that wasn’t just the class of the opposition. As I have said in a previous post, Glenwood and Kearsney look like frontrunners in KZN with House and Hilton still unknown quantities. We will know about hilton next weekend. I would like to be able to split myself in two to be able to see the Kearsney – Glenwood game next weekend as well.
@Star, Pentz was injured. Looked like a head knock but was difficult to see. I think he was replaced by Jardine.
@NW_Knight:
Don’t worry, it’ll all be sorted out…
Funny how Northwood have takent their pre-season win vs DHS as if it were a SuperRugby final victory. Might as well bring out the champagne and start celebrating!!!
Just pre-season mates, but watch out, boys are responding very well to Wilkinson
@ Westers- the backline defence is a problem from last year. Defence requires an attitude adjustment. Let us hope that happens. I am also looking forward to the McHardy v Wright clash as well as the clash on the 11 May when he plays Reece Edwards. Could be a CW playoff Which player was injured?
@Grasshopper & Mike, The Westville – College game was a 30 minutes each way game, played as a warmup game. Neither side kicked penalties for poles but it was played with normal substitution rules. Both sides played a lot better than Wednesday but then they weren’t up against the same calibre of opposition. I know Westville still have a few players out injured and they also lost a player early in the game due to injury. I think College also have players out injured. I think Westville had the better of the game with the strength being in the forwards. Their backline looks a bit suspect on defence and they are going to have to work hard on this aspect. Too many missed tackles. Standout players for Westville were McHardy and De La Rey. Martin at lock also had a good game. McHardy vs Wright this coming weekend will a battle to watch.
@Horsey: The score is on the board. We played our worst game and still won!
@PlayFlair:
Once again, DHS used the games as trial matches meaning they were giving other players who hadn’t made the original A teams chances and were testing out different combinations. This ensures that whoever is in the A team deserves to be there. Also, it doesn’t help when the Development sides don’t want the matches to end early. After all, they didn’t go all the way to Musgrave to play a half match!
I know this is mainly a rugby site but is any one aware of why Mike Bechet has been relieved of his position of cricket and hockey coach at College ?
@HORSEFLY NO.1: Those officials involved when scores of 80’s, 60’s etc are accumulated should be fired. Those winning coaches and schools need to rething their philosophy of why they are playing sport and for the life of me I cannot understand what was achieved with those winning margins against Dev team?. The game definitely lost supporters while some eggo’s got the boost they so desperately searched for. It’s a disgrace!
@NW_Knight:
It was only thee worst game for NW beacuse of the pressure they were put under by the opposition. It wasn’t because of something self inflicted but just a case of NW being unable to blossom under pressure.
Yes there’s a difference but then again there was one last year too and if it weren’t for a couple of untaken chances DHS would have won that game insteaf of losing by 6 points.
Expect a good game between the two. Its still quite far but if Kearsney take it it’ll be by less than 12
@Horsey: Yep. Was without doubt the worst game NW have played this year. There’s a vast difference between DHS and Kearsney and NW beat DHS anyway. I think the local game of the season will be GW – Kearsney. No worries for NW – they still have 18 games left.
Sorry, replace improved with imported
@NW_Knight:
School was the better team against the improved Northwood team and also didn’t have some key players available due to injury.
Also, DHS have a tendancy to give Kearsney problems no matter how bad the DHS team.
Expect victories for DHS U14A,U15A and U16A. We are excellent at u14 and u15 level.
@Horsey: Can’t see DHS doing any better, unfortunately.
Looking at some of the results and eish Northwood just got plain klapped! One of the teams even lost 80-0(4ths I think). Sad really, especially if you consider that this was at Northwood. DHS will be at Bothas Hill, can’t wait for that.
Also, Glenwood Vs Kearsney next weekend promises to be a cracker!
@Grasshopper: The 24 by Hentie Cilliers also caught my eye, but I did mention the other day, that they have a decent team. Last year, if I remember correctly, they had 7-8 players in the Griffon side which did quite well at CW. In Bloem, they have, I believe, a “local”rule- the match is stopped when a side gets 50. Not sure if this applied. A surprise was at U16. Grey beat Duineveld 24-16. And that is a very good Grey side
Northwood
1st thing that came into my head – Northwoods’ not getting any bangs for their bucks so far !
Beating Porties and GC at the Nite series maybe have given N Wood false sense of security
Sounds like a bit of a klap here – having seen Kearsney at KP – not surprised though
Feeling is that the Green Machine are going to find it tough at Bothas Hill next week
@Grasshopper: I’d also like to know. Maybe the emphasis was more on combinations and structure ahead of the festivals. I’d imagine they would want to leave the proper game for the derby later on in the year.
@Grasshopper: Not sure you can read much into the Voortrekker game. Don’t Voortrekker normally play the Tier 1 school’s 2nd sides. I think College scored 50 in the day night series, which might have been shorter games (??) and with a weak team missing the polo players, swimmers and cricketers. All conjecture though, I do think Hilton have a shot, they had their moments last year – beat House … Yes??
@Amalekite, was that a proper game this weekend? Methinks it was just another trial game as the real deal only really happens when the two schools play each other down the line and this year the Westville fixture is at College. I think that is when it will count..
Westville looking better. They need to work on contesting the opposition lineouts. Their first time tackling is not up to scratch either.
Wow, Hilton put down a marker there with 81 points! Voortrekker normally put up a decent fight and are not normally klapped that badly. Hilton the dark horses of KZN, especially with their very light fixture list….
Hentie Cilliers did well to score 24 points against Grey! As usual Grey usually score double the amount ;-)
Tough boys from Klerksdorp. I notice they played 2 matches, presumably both on Saturday?
@Westers:
DHS were treating it as a pre-season game and wanted to test out combinations whilst KZN just wanted to finish the match, didnt want to stop
@Horsie, Why was the game allowed to go on so long? Normally these games are stopped when the score gets to 60. This type of mis-match does no good for either team.
Well done to Marlow people under estimate these Eastern Cape sheep farmers at your own expense.
Die Brandwag(EC) 66 Volkskool(Graaf-reinet) 6
Gill College 25 Victoria Park High 7
Union high 29 St Andrews(Bloem) 0
Nice stuff DHS! This team is definitely much better than last years one. They could have a good season. Watch out for their fullback, excellent feet!
Dale 36 cambrige 17
DHS vs KZN Development matches.
1st DHS 66 KZN 8
16A DHS 45 KZN 0
15A DHS.60 KZN 0
14A DHS 99 KZN 0
Mismatches really but DHS was treating them as trial matches so hopefully coaches will now know their proper teams after 2 to 3 rounds of trials
Think DHS U14A just beat KZN Development 99-0. Nice workout boys. It only gets harder!
@Westers: Thanks a lot, I think this game will be an interesting one.
@Mike, I believe the College – Westville game is a full game played under normal rules but with both schools agreeing to play it as a warm-up. Not quite sure what that means. Maybe there will be less (or no) kicking for poles from penalties and more running and experimental moves. Both sides need this based on Wednesday nights performances.
@Klofie Pa: jammer.
Anyone know if Westville and M. College will be playing with their full sides ? Or is it one of those 20 minute a half games ?
@Klofie Pa: Di nog n bietjie vroeg- IN DIE OGGEND!
kom nou beet haal dan my post ook af!! LOL
@ _ _ _ _ -spangled banner: I think this fixture list above adequately answers the question of what happened to St Charles vs Westville this weekend at Wartburg. Timetable clash! This fixture against Campbell which the two schools have been trying to get in place for quite a few years now, was arranged midway through last year.
