Clifton & DHS agree to chukka rugby matches instead of proper ones

Concern over picking up serious injuries ahead of next weekend’s Easter Festival commitments has prompted Clifton College and Durban High School to change the competitive nature of their interschools rugby matches. They will now play no scores kept chukka format rugby games instead.

Surprisingly they have agreed to do the same in the non-contact sport of hockey, which does seem a little odd.

The sports relationship between the two schools can’t be that great at the moment. DHS is making a concerted effort to strengthen their own rugby programme. This includes a policy of acquiring new players for their age-group teams above the under-14 level. Before he enrolled at DHS, one of their newer arrivals happened to be a top junior age-group rugby player in Clifton’s high school where he was being developed and valued. Unless there is mutual consent ahead of a school transfer, this kind of thing just about always leads to unhappiness. Keeping the peace is sometimes as simple as just staying away from regular sports opponents’ key players.
