Port Natal will once again host KwaZulu-Natal’s only official school rugby cup competition during the humid month of February. Damelin is the generous sponsor of the competition that features both 1st and 2nd teams. Don’t be surprised to see a few coaches from KZN rival schools in the crowd. The Northwood 1st XV is bound to draw quite a bit of attention ahead of the regular inter-schools season. Following their good form in 2012, George Campbell can expect similar interest to be shown in their form. The skills of Port Natal’s White Knights might also surprise a few onlookers and Pinetown usually has a couple of useful players. The new addition for 2013 is Port Shepstone. It’s a big ask for the school from the south coast. They will have to make six round trips to be part of the evening action. As a result of Port Shepstone joining the fray at 1st team level, the Glenwood Invitation XV, who finished fourth in the 1st XV section in 2012, drops down a level and will provide a competitive team for the 2nd team competition in 2013.

@Beet: Any chance of publishing the program for the Gelofte Night Series which kick’s off this week?
On a completely different note was it not nice to watch Chad see off the great Americans( Lochte and Co) and win a World gold medal in the second fastest 100 butterfly of all time.Well done boy you have made us ALL very proud.
Dont think this will be Glenwoods’full 2nd team
with no disrespect to other schools the Gwd “real” 2nd team would probably beat all the 1st teams at this tourno with Porties, GC and Northwood providing stiff opposition – I think its fair to say GWD full 2nd’s last year would have won all matches at Porties against 1st teams – Glenwood 2nds last year would have given GWD 1st a run for their money
Hope the Gelofte nite series takes place – good to see the hosts and Suid Natal having a full go at each other – some very entertaining games last year
have a feeling Gelofte tourno may be just later on
– last years finals played nite before GWD -Westville game
@star: Remember the new scrum laws!! Things may change up front.
Last year GW and Westville had the best 2nd teams in KZN and I am sure that will be repeated next year.An example will be the Westville tight 5 for next year where with 4 quality props(Jackson,Majola(GK 2011),Kennedy(GK 2011) and Jonty)and 5 locks( Weir( GK 2011),Prinsloo,Jardine, Martin( GK 2012) and Thambiran(GK2012)) the 2nd team tight 5 will certainly be very competitive and be able to compete with most tier 2 schools. If that is indeed the case then the GW invitational team which will be on a par should be able to go head to head with some of the 2nd tier 1st teams let alone the 2nd teams.A predict a few heavy wins for the GW team. It also emphasises the loss of Westville not playing GW in terms of a competitive season.
Last year many of Glenwood’s top players were on an overseas tour. There was opportunity for GM to play the likes of Tom, Marwana, Pina and possibly one or two others that did not go on the tour but they respected intention of the Invitation team and played only 2nd and 3rd team players.
I think Glenwood will continue to remain true to the spirit of level playing fields competition and will use this as an opp to give their 3rds and 4ths a run and a shot at silverware.
@Grasshopper: last year , it had a strong vein of the 2nd team players, yes there were 3rd and 4th Team members, but still had the potential to win or at least come 2nd in the series
Dudas , was new to it at this level, and it showed unfortunately
what , GW could have won it last year ?? a few bad errors at critical moments , bad selection and it would have been different,
they will be far too strong for weaker teams
@GHSDad, last year I heard it was really a Glenwood 3rd’s and 4th’s mixture, so if this is really a 2nd side then they should win all their games against other schools 2nd’s sides..
Is the Gelofte Night Series not taking place this year?
It will be interesting to see how Glenwood`s 2nd stringers do against the 2nds of the others as they played against the 1st teams last year. I will keep an eye out and hoping to see some interesting results!
