Chris Luman has been named as the 15th headmaster of the school. Luman, a Wynberg old boy who taught at both his alma mater and Queens before heading over to New Zealand, will take over the reigns during College’s milestone 150th year. Luman has been described as a multifaceted man because he is strong on academies, sport, arts and culture. Luman effectively replaces Glenwood old boy Ron Jury who had been the headmaster from 2006 until his retirement earlier this year. Jury had a total of 34 years of service at College.

n its milestone 150th year, KZN’s prestigious and oldest Boys’ High School, Maritzburg College, will welcome its 15th Headmaster, Chris Luman. Chris and his wife, Carmel, return to South Africa from St Paul’s Collegiate in New Zealand where he has made his mark on the academic, sporting and cultural fronts. This dovetails perfectly with a school that prides itself on producing all-rounders.
Originally from the Cape, Mr Luman initially saw duty at his alma mater, Wynberg Boys’ High, and Queens College before plying his trade in New Zealand which added international experience to his South African foundation. He quickly rose through the ranks to be appointed Assistant Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster at Scots College and then St Paul’s Collegiate respectively and also acted as Headmaster in that time. Besides extensive experience as an English and Drama Master, he also boasts provincial cricket experience as well as national and international rugby coaching prowess. Add to this a long history in debating, choirs, plays and productions and you will understand why this multifaceted man has found favour with the College community.
Chris wrote from New Zealand, “I am extremely proud and honoured to be appointed as the 15th Headmaster of College. I look forward to meeting and working with all members of the College community who together will take it to even loftier heights. 2013 is indeed a significant year in the 150 years history and my family and I are immensely excited to be a part of this momentous occasion.”
Chairman of the Maritzburg College Governing Body, Steve Colenbrander added, “The search for a new headmaster started in earnest in June this year . We have literally searched the world to find the right candidate for our great school , and we believe that Mr Luman is the perfect fit for this prestigious position . The critical issue for us was balance . Mr Luman is an accomplished teacher , and has extensive sporting and leadership experience . Our goal was to find the person who will lead and position our great school , and we believe that we have found the right man for the job . I would also like to compliment the wonderful support that we have had from our mentors and leaders in the local Education Department . These folk have been fantastic and gone beyond the call of duty , and have held our hands and guided us in this difficult process . Thank you to all of them.”
The Maritzburg College family welcomes the Lumans and wishes them a long and happy stay as Chris takes up his position at the beginning of term two. He will unofficially join us for our 150th birthday functions in March prior to taking up his Headmastership.

I see Brendan Grant is the new Headmaster at Queens which is good met him while he was coaching Grey PE 1st good well balanced man and as far as i hear only like 42 yrs old which is good.

played rugby with Chris when he was in Queenstown,for Border and the then Swifts rugby club,he played prop,big strong oke,will do well at MC,won’t take any sh one t.
