A big 2013 awaits Noord-Kaap

The 2013 season holds several exciting challenges for Noord-Kaap, one of the pillars of Griqualand West high schools rugby.

The most imposing of these will be their keenly-anticipated debut at the prestigious Wildeklawer festival, hosted by Maritzburg College early in May.  Significantly, this will already be their third festival appearance of the year as they are due to attend the Pukke Skouspel in Potchefstroom, followed by the Maritzburg College 150 year celebratory event a week later.

The white-and-greens are used to having to travel in order to supplement their fairly meagre domestic roster, but there is good news on the local front as well.

Firstly, a long overdue attempt is being made to restore an amicable sporting relationship with Kimberley archrivals Diamantveld.  So keen are the two Griqualand-West powerhouses to reconcile their differences that a full week of interschool activities is planned for the second week of the second term.

Secondly, the GW schools body has put its collective foot down and insisted that all of the province’s Big 5 (Diamantveld, Duineveld, Landboudal, Noord-Kaap and Upington) play each other each season with immediate effect.  This rivalry gets under way as early as Saturday 16 March 2013 when Noord-Kaap meet Landboudal from Jacobsdal at the Diamantveld Sportsday.

All three of the aforementioned initiatives are long overdue, with the last two set to revitalize the competition for Craven Week selection.

Noord-Kaap’s fixture list for 2013 is as follows:
02 March  :  at Fichardtpark Sportsday (opponents to be confirmed, in Bloemfontein)
09 March  :  vs Marlow (in Cradock)
16 March  :  vs Landboudal (at Diamantveld)
21, 23, 25 March :  at Pukke Skouspel (in Potchefstroom)
30 March, 1, 3 April  :  at Maritzburg College 150 Festival
13 April  :  vs Duineveld (in Upington)
20 April  :  vs Diamantveld (at home)
02, 04 May  :  at Wildeklawer Festival (at Maritzburg College)
11 May  :  vs Waterkloof (at home)
18 May  :  vs Helpmekaar (in Johannesburg)
20 July  :  vs Upington (at home)
27 July  :  vs HTS Daniel Pienaar (at home)
10 August  :  vs Outeniqua (in George)

Greetings from my Drakensberg Holiday. The only score I care about right now is this one:

    Greenblooded 1 – Mayans 0

@rugbyfan: Don’t have to get it together. It is up to date from those dates, kept that way by the College sports statistician, Tony Wiblin.

I am trying to get them into a format that is slice-diceable, currently in document format for Jimeloyo-Ji – the College rugby history book, co-authored by Tony and Skonk. I will get Tony to update the book, reprint and offer you okes a special deal :-)

@rugbyfan: I would gladly assist as long as others hop(per)on board to contribute the stats. Otherwise I just know it will only contain Glenwood records compliments of a new CT resident

@rugbyfan: I guess the problem with College is that we can only produce rugby results from 1870 onwards, and cricket from 1865. What use is that

@Queenian: Unfortunately I could not get hold of Queens to confirm if they had a substitute for that date. I think Noord-Kaap’s arm was twisted by their own GW Union declaring that the Griquas big 5: NK, Diamantveld, Duineveld, Upington and Landboudal have to play each other every season from 2013 onwards. No more running and hiding for schools in the Northern Cape.

@rugbyfan: This is a good point. I will follow it up and find out which one is correct. According to the Queens calendar 13/04/13 is set aside for NK but NK have Duineveld down on their schedule.

Yeah I remember you said.I still think that it would be an interesting affair now that NK seem to have their rugby on a competitive level and GCB are no longer as invincible as they were.

@Playa: You have not seen the fields in Kimberley, have you. The Rec in QT, in winter, would, by comparison, appear lush. I have told you that Grey and NK played regularly until quite recently and that the scores were fairly large.

@Playa: I think they would have struggled to pronounce the Dale and Queens’ players names and surnames.

@beet: Eish! That is a tough one.I think Gimmies are the only ones guaranteed of a fixture against GCB.They are matched up every year at festivals.
Personally, I’d rather have Monnas miss out on a chance this year. (Sorry Andre T)

@beet: What happened to the Affies fixture? Was it a once off? On the EC schools fixtures there Noord-Kaap vs Queens, was the fixture scrapped?

@Playa: The Wildeklawer fixtures have not been finalised yet so hope floats. The only problem is that there 3 other schools I’m sure all would really like to see playing Grey College as well at WK:

    Gimmies,
    Klofies,
    Monnas

At least 2 good teams will lose out on an opportunity to play GCB in 2013 then
