@Gungets Tuft: hey i suggest that these two act their age and get it sorted , truly childish behaviour for, headmasters to be brutally honest

@GreenBlooded: 22nd June is the day after the schools break up for the mid-year break and will be just after mid-year exams. The heads will be as popular as pork chops in Jerusalem if they organise a derby day that day.

There is a TBA fixture on 22 June. Please let sanity prevail and the 2 Trevors sort out their kak and let the Westville fixture go ahead.

Also notice there is no Pinetown fixture and that we are playing Monnas as a scheduled fixture.

@GreenBlooded: I agree 100% – he does not need to explain. I think he explained too much, he needs to point to the fact that the schools is tryuing to teach and develop boys, not the parents – then leave it at that. I know that type of parent he is talking about and they will not be embarrassed, they will take it as further evidence that he is incompetent – the fact that he is not willing to listed to their clearly superior view. I have a saying – “never wrestle with pigs – you both get dirty but the pig likes it”.

@Grasshopper: Sure, Old Boys should feel that they can have discussions with the school management and governing body about issues that affect the school, but there are channels to do that. I get the impression that the people he was talking about went to press, which is poor. That means putting your opinions ahead of the public image and welfare of the school. Feeling ignored is a very poor excuse for that.

@Greenblooded, very true but he needs to answer simple morale questions like why did he bring in boys in grade 11 and give them positions of authority without them earning it in the school. He should have know this would pee off parents and current boys. Sometimes one needs to say know for the better of the rest of the boys. I can understand why some boys felt let down by these kids coming in and taking over where they had earned the right……..sorry positions are earned through respect no other way…

@Gungets Tuft: Not sure that is his objective (trying to endear himself to the perps) and why should it be? It must be a tough job being head of a major school where every move you make is under intense scrutiny. I guess it has to be about doing what you feel is right, standing by your principles and not feeling the need to explain yourself to every old-boy, vicarious parent, opposition school, SBR blogger ad-infinitum on every single issue and letting history do it’s job of being the ultimate judge of leadership.

That particular Kershaw newsletter is from the end of the second term. I wonder if the job wrt what he mentioned has become more difficult since then.

A few good points were made. I like the bits about vicarious living and vilify staff. I believe that a headmaster from any school has to take the lead and enforce acceptable standards.

I’m just not sold any points that suggest that unhealthy interest in rugby and winning being driven solely by outside forces. A lot of it starts within the school’s structures. Not just at Glenwood, at all the schools.

I’ve met the Pretoria Boys High coach. A very pleasant guy. The only time I managed to bring a serious look to his face was when I suggested that I could organise them a kit sponsor who would fork out R100k per annum to display branding on the PBHS jerseys and that this dough could then be used to offer rugby bursaries. PBHS do not have a kit sponsor and do not give out rugby bursaries. I think their headmaster would be justified if he was to talk about outsiders creating an unhealthy winning obsession.

@Green Hopper: Sounds as if Kershaw is regularly humbugged by parents. I am sure it is the same at all schools – I know a candidate or two at College. I am not sure he is going to endear himselves to the perps by hinting they might be “vicarious empty vessels” but sometimes you use a feather, sometimes the whole chicken, know what I mean.

Think that he should go to fullback mate, he has great pace and an unbeleiveable step! He will terrorise defences from the back in counter-attacks.still remember what he did this year on Old Boys day at GW,that step… Play him at 15 and Joubert at 13.

@BoishaaiPa: I really appreciate and understand that you always downplay individualism to emphasize that it’s a team sport where the players have to perform as a unit to succeed. Also that no-one owns the hooped jersey, it owns you so to speak and you are one of many before and to come that will wear it. That said, we are not communists, some are more equal than others and brilliant individuals and characters are those that keep the game interesting, and maybe go on to become childhood heroes and legends.

It could be a tough year, followed by better and better years after that. Can’t say the same for others wo are looking set to have a one-hit-wonder ‘dream team’.

    @grasshopper
It doesn’t matter anyways because the 130 kg guy is gone after this year anyways. He will be followed by a very good lock in the number 4 jumper. Expect him to make a huge impact next year, probably the best line out specialist in KZN. He is about 1.94m tall.

And there is no better place for that than on the west side of Bloem, where the grass is lush, the air fresh , with nice dry and crisp winters. And of course, honest and fair refs. And by the way, what about the preceding 10 yrs?

@beet: Centre has always been his position of choice although he has great vision from fullback and can be extremely dangerous running from the deep. I think he is been wasted at wing as his options has been limited. Maybe to much is being said about the U16`s that could play 1st team and maybe a look at current gr11`s that played 2nds and 3rds this year should be looked at. Nothing has been said of the boy that made SA Bokkie squad at flyhalf- maybe another option for the 1st team next year?

When can we get some updates from the proper schools like Kearsney, Michaelhouse and Hilton? Getting sick of reading all the speculations of who will be Glenwood’s quarterback or Westville’s cheerleaders or College’s janitor. Bring on the real teams now for jeeper’s sake.

@GHSdad: I have noticed an improvement in Corne’s play over the course of the 2012 season. He is a strong runner. One of the more pleasing things was to see him looking around for support to offload by the end of the year. With that sort of growth in mind, I wonder if there is a place for him at centre where his size and strength could be put to good use.

@Grasshopper: I think that this is a problem at Glenwood as they move players around a lot. Vermaak joined Glenwood after representing KZN at U12 and U13 at centre and at Glenwood he played fullback. Come senior rugby he is moved around between both wings and fullback. The boy has no chance of spesializing in a specific position and makes him jack of all trades and master of none.

@Horsie, I would rather have a Brad Mcneil or Ferdie Horn type lock at this level with ball skills than a big over weight lumbering lock who arrives at the rucks an hr late. Obviously a 2m plus athletic lock with ball skills too is better, but rare in KZN. It’s virtually unheard of any KZN schools locks being over 2m. I think even the Doops are 1.95 and 1.92 respectively…

@NW_Knight, jeez that is huge for a schoolboy pack (Monnas and Selborne had that in 2011), an average of over 100kg per player. I thought big for KZN schools was between 750 and 800. Northwood must have some pretty big props, but they always have…..not saying good ones though. At this level being short and powerful is better than being tall and massive, look at Neil Oelofse.

Westman is in Matric, i don’t see him being around next year , i think players are playing in different positions this year compared to last , and this isn’t a good thing , we are exposed at Flyhalf, and locks, we have one decent lock , but dont have an enforcer and Kay might fill that role , i just don’t see him being at the same level, IMHO, i think Hippolite will be a wonder and blessing high work rate and committed player, but recovering from a year off, let’s see if he can be another Sean

@Horsie, you seem to know a lot about the Glenwood team, you there spying? So who did DHS buy for 2013? Your lock this year was 130kg, but was not that great, height and size are not everything. I would rather have a 1,90m lock with great ball skills than one 10cm with none. Look at Hargreaves he had the right physique but no grunt…..too soft…

    @Griffon:
Not too sure about Kenny van Niekerk, I remember there being a huge hype about both him and D.Goodson when they were at U14 level. It seems Kennys spark has died out a bit, also at kzn trials he was played at prop suggesting that he is on the wrong side of the fat scale… As for Fouche,he played pretty well for the 1st side vs College this year so I do think he should get a chance. I do think that either of Thobejane and De Waal will start for the 1st XV. I do agree about Morne whilst Percy will be too small for prop. Don’t think that Jonas will be in the side with van Zyl there…
I do think that the GW locks won’t be too tall though, could be a problem their tallest will be like 1.92m . I know our two locks will be 1.95 and 2.03m, Glenwood might struggle in this area. The front row will also be small though as all U16A front rankers were quite short, only Westman being big.
Lastly, just like everyone else, I think that their strength will be backline.
Oh, and don’t forget the 8th man that Glenwood bought from KZN development…

@NW_Knight, yep smaller then usual which will hopefully make them change game plan and move the ball through the hands and avoid contact, meaning good tries. I believe they showed a glimpse of this in the last game against College when we scored some good backline tries. Is Northwood expecting a big pack?

I don’t follow Glenwood players a lot, but from my point of view, this is what I reckon would happen: Mazibuko should be captain after being captain throughout the age group stages and at GK. Morne, should be at fullback, Bredell second team and maybe even bench. Persy as a reserve maybe, Curtis a reserve. I forgot the boys surname, but the boys call him Kenny, very big guy, should be on the flank. Not sure about Fouche I’m not sure.

@Andre, after Monnas’s horrendous year I think they will have an even bigger problem with imports….

@Grasshopper: Joubert would be the first name on my teamsheet. I’m very excited about his prospects. Very good player.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: eeek! Westman will not be allowed to play due to the Headmaster’s agreement if u19 + did not arrive in Gr.10.

@Horsie, I thought Westman was in matric this year. Yep, Morne had a great 7’s so will probably be brought into the starting 15. Van Zyl and Mcume will fight it out for the flyhalf position or shuffle sideways…

    @Grasshopper:
what about Westman? think he will be starting at hooker whilst i also think they will find a place for Morne Joubert in the starting line up as well as leroux van zyl…
Kevin isnt a natural 7 and i think u16 cappie J.Coetzee is a better bet at the position

@Greenhopper and all the greens in Durban, here was my guess on the 2013 squad, does this look anything like the real squad?

    1) T. Zondi
    2) A Mthembu
    3) Wynand Vermeulen
    4) Muzewandile Mazibuko
    5) Rupert Kay
    6) W. Hippolite
    7) Kevin Du Randt
    8] S. Van der Heever
    9) Kwazi Khanyile
    10) M. Mcume
    11) Sphamandla Ngcobo
    12) Akhona Nela
    13) Ruben Fouche
    14) Corne Vermaak
    15) Chris Bredell (Horsie says he runs the 100m in 10.67, lightning quick)

    N Ntanzi
    K Gerrard
    Khutso Thobejane
    Morne Joubert
    Curtis Jonas
    Percy Mngadi
    K Ntshangase
