Vra gerus jou vriend @kenloos vir ‘n opinie, hy was Saterdag by die M&F rugbydag. Nogal in ‘n ou 2006 swart Monnas trui met Katinka se Koektafel of so iets as hoofborg

Hou gerus Gim se no.8 ,Henco Martins dop.
Ploegie se ander span as Boland Landbou, is Bellville.

@beet:Asenati a very talented player and one of the green squad players that stayed home. Wonder what the sanctions from SARU will be for players not attending the green squad camp. Word is that players not attending will be left out for future (whatever that means). Although discipline is important, how punitive can you really be?

Affies beat Helpies and by all accounts Helpies are a highly rated team. There must be quite a bit of good things that Affies have going for themselves at the moment that they will take down to the Cape.

I remember the game a few years back against Paul Roos on the 150th Rugby Day. Affies were in it to win it but the factor backs of Paul Roos proved to be a deciding factor. I’m not sure Gim will have those same kind of threats in their line particularly with Muller Dup having a first run out after an injury layoff IF he does play.

I think the battle up front will be very absorbing. Sounds like Labuschagne now playing on the side of the scrum and not no.8. Anyway whoever is in that match-up with Gim’s Henco Martins (possibly Phillip Potgieter) will need to bring his A-game to Paarl going by what happened against Stellenberg. And whoever on Gim’s team has to attend to Marnus Potgieter will also have to be dialled in.

Maybe the message should be you don’t have to stop them as long as you’re outscoring them.

Geez Asenati Ntlabakanye the tighthead prop for St Stithians – what a machine! It was like watching Billy Vunipola in a no.3 jersey.

@4×4: I believe the scoreline does not reflect the contest. Affies did use their opportunities much better though. The try where flanker, Van den Berg stormed down the Goedhals kick, was a try ( referee indicated a try but linesman said otherwise). This would not only have been points, but would have shifted momentum. Affies were continuously on the offside line, but never penalized. When Helpies attacked close to Affies try line and got a penalty, they took a quick tap. Affies prevented a try by not being back 10 meters. Extremely poor refereeing. Last try by Helpies not allowed as linesman deemed player “out”. Think Affies very lucky on day, but did appear well rounded. As we say “ze score is ze score”. No looking back, only work harder.

So dit sal `n grote wees.

Mulder, 10. Goedhals/Roets, 12. Goedhals/Roets/Briel, 14. Tshongu/Briel 11.

Eerste 2 beseer, laaste 2 by SARU gewees.

Diepte tel.

@beet: Not that it means anything- but interesting to see that both Gim and Affies beat their respective opponents by 31-19. Stellenberg really impressed me on Friday in Paarl. Lets hope they gave us just as good a challenge as Helpmekaar gave Affies, otherwise we might be in for a suprise come Saturday. I’ve only heard good (and scary) things about this Affies team. That being said, Gim have only lost 5 or 6 games at home over the last 10 years. The JA Kriel is a hard place to get a result at. Can’t wait for Saturday!!!

@Roger: Their website indicates 18 teams, but even 15 is 50% more than St Alban’s, which is significant. The BE will enable them to attract better players and add more ‘gees’. They’ve also recently started playing in decent Easter Festivals – e.g. KES, Saints…not Krugersdorp. The final piece of the puzzle would be to further improve their fixture list by removing some co-eds and adding KES, Jeppe, etc.

@theblackandwhite: Up to 3 years ago St Alban’s had a good winning ratio v Bennies – e.g. some 70%, but have lost three times in a row now. That said, they were robbed last year when even the Bennies coaches could not understand why the ref gifted them a penalty with no time left on the clock to win by one point. Home town reffing! St Alban’s is smaller than all its rivals bar St Andrews School, which is compounded by being very good/pretty good at competing sports – e.g. basketball, rowing, hockey, etc. They really must get back up to 14 teams, as the lack of depth hit them hard last year when there were injuries. What could have been a great season became a decent one. They had between 4 and 11 1st team players missing the whole season. The new head of rugby is trying to attract more rugby talent and improve the participation numbers.

@Wyvern: Yes, I suspect that MHS and SAC will put quite big scores past St David’s, as both look strong this year. However, St Davids easily beat Kingswood at u16 level, so there is hope that they may at least push one of those teams.

@Vleis: we will have to agree to disagree then  I know that Jeppe has put an emphasis on all teams playing the same rugby from u14 through to opens – so having to play a new style after a style was drummed into you for 4 years will always take some time. I missed pieces of the game but the first 3 tries came from first phase set pieces in the opp 22 so not a direct result from running the ball.

I didn’t realize that St Davids had a good rugby team, I thought that St Albans would blow them away. St Albans rugby gives me the same impression that St Benedicts gave about 7 or 8 years ago, on the verge of becoming very strong.

@Roger: It’s probably flattering to St Alban’s that you’re surprised that St David’s got so close. For starters, St David’s has a much larger rugby club with 18 teams (according to their website) v 10 at St Alban’s. Also, St Alban’s have never beaten this team at age group level – as u16s in 2015, St Davids only lost two games and comfortably beat Kingswood, Bennies, Parktown and also beat St John’s (who beat Jeppe that year). I heard a rumour that they will be adding a boarding establishment at St David’s – can anyone confirm? If so, they will improve further.

@theblackandwhite: Re the grade 11’s dominating the current squad: that’s a fair point and why I thought that Jeppe would not perform as well this year as they they have in the past three years. However, so far, so good for Jeppe.

Re coming to grips with a new style: I don’t buy that excuse. The same style probably generated your tries, so it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other. Also, more importantly, this was Jeppe’s third match of the season and Saints’ first so Jeppe had a big advantage re coming to grips with game plans, etc.

@theblackandwhite: Howzit, MHS have been playing that brand of rugby for many years, running into space, offloading in the tackle, retaining possession, and hardly ever kicking in their 22. It nearly cost them yesterday in both the 1st and 2nds games, as big looping passes went adrift or were intercepted in their 22. It works well with a smaller very mobile pack. I’m not sure how it would work in heavy traffic, but certainly stretches defenses.

@Vleis: I would not read too much into this result to be honest. It was clear to see that Jeppe are still getting to grips with a new style of rugby which I am assuming is coming from the new coaching set up. They literally ran from everywhere, even when defending from their own try line they would run the ball. It was very much a NZ style rugby, off loading and keeping the ball alive which created a few handling errors. At 26-11 up, Jeppe could have easily closed the game out, but chose to keep on running the ball and handling errors kept Saints in the game. If some of the off loads stuck, then the score could have easily been 40 or 50. I was pleasantly surprised by Jeppe to be honest, I think many old boys (including myself) were expecting Jeppe to be a little weaker this year as the vast majority of their squad ( I have been told 90%, but I can’t confirm) are in Grade 11 and will be back next year. I look forward to watching them though, if that is the brand of rugby they are going to be playing this season

@beet: To be honest, I’m no big Saints fan, as they are one of St Alban’s big rivals, but I’ve definitely noticed an improvement over the last four years. Their results today were pretty decent considering that they were away from home and the Jeppe teams already had a game or two under the belt.

    1st Jeppe won by 26 – 23; U16 Jeppe won by 33 to 23; U15 Saints won by 20 – 21; U14 Jeppe won by 15 – 7.

@Vleis: Okay good. That works out a bit better for me because I’d said to Andre T last week that I believed Saints will narrow the gap on Jeppe and the match would be a lot closer than most people expect. The Saints A-team age-group performances and results against Kearsney at Kearsney last year pointed to improved competitiveness and suggested good things to come at 1st XV level for at least the next few years.

@beet: The Jeppe score was 26 to 23 for Jeope, not 33 to 23. So, it looks like my prediction that Saints will be stronger this year than recent vintages could be correct. Also, St John’s beat Parktown away, so my prediction that they will be copetitive could also be true. That said, Parktown are generally pretty evarege, but are strengthned at 1st team by u19s. Last ear they had 8 (including the Tambwe, who played for the Lions in Super Rugby today), but if they have less this year then they will be average.

I watched the St Alban’s v St David’s game, which the former won at St David’s by 17 to 14. The game could have gone either way, but St Alban’s snuck it near the death. St Alban’s had the advantage of a game under the belt via their 10 all draw v Ben Vorster. St David’s backs looked rusty, but their forwards looked slick in the lineouts and rucking. That said, they were aided by playing against 14 men for almost the entire match after the St Alban’s lock (and vice-captain) was sent off after 5 minutes. I didn’t see the incident, so can’t comment on same. So…a decent start for St Alban’s considering that this is potentially a ‘dream team’ for St David’s, as they only lost to only two games as u16s, including a narrow loss away to Hilton, who are looking good this year.

Wel gedaan Menlo, Eldoraigne, EG Jansen. Let wel in 2015 speel EG Jansen as 0/16 gelykop teen Monnas in Tuks groepswedstryd.

    Menlo vs Kemptonpark:
    O/14 Menlo 68 – 0 game stopped
    O/15 Menlo 52 – 5
    2de Menlo 21 – 18
    O/16 Menlo 48 – 5

    1 ste Menlo 17 – 11

@Kattes-Strofes: Good summary of the game. Gim deserved winners but Stellenberg showed real guts on the evening. Two silly mistakes handed Gim two tries on a platter. With the 2nd team only losing by 4 points and the u/16 team playing to a draw, things are looking good for the season ahead. On this performance I have little doubt that Stellenberg will surprise some A league schools this year.

The schoolboy rugby season in the Western Cape kicked off last night with a highly entertaining match between hosts Paarl Gim and Stellenberg.
Although there were some early season mistakes, made by both teams, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of play. The battle up front was huge, as the visitors matched the efforts of their more illustrious opponents. Gim were slightly better in the set scrums, but Stellenberg shaded the lineouts. In general play, both teams put their bodies on the line with some huge hits.

The key factor in the outcome of the match came amongst the backs, where Gim looked far more smooth and secure on attack. They also have some good pace out wide. Without naming and shaming players, one of Stellenberg,s main playmakers, who is normally a sound player, had an off night, which filtered through to his fellow backs.

The difference in this 31-19 Gim victory was, the ruthless way, as all top sides do, of Gim, to capitilise on mistakes from their opponents, while clinically finishing off all their scoring oppertunities.

My two standout players of the fixture was both forwards. Henco Martins, the lightning quick no.8 of Gim, capped off a brilliant performance,by scoring no less than three of the hosts tries.
Janko Swanepoel, the lanky no.4 lock of Stellies, was dominant in the lineouts and also impressed with his high work rate in general play.
I expect both these players to be serious contenders for higher honours later in the season.

All in all, a solid start to the season by both schools. I watched the match in the company of Western Cape schoolboy rugby guru, Tony Stoops, who was in fine form, sharing some good jokes not to be repeated on a schoolboy rugby site ! Also met some fellow bloggers, which resulted in some interesting chatter .

@Skopgraaf243: it’s that good kind of nervousness that begs to be released by some on- field action. I have full confidence in our team’s abilities and look forward to some good running rugby from both teams. Tomorrow this time will be 1/2 way through match and soon thereafter life will carry on as normal. Some glad, others sad, soon to pass. Until the next gut wrenching buildup to one of many SBR clashes.

Some feedback on the Maritzburg College / St Charles practice matches yesterday (Wed 16th)

Maritzburg College and St Charles College met on the rugga field across the age groups (A & B teams in age groups – with 1-3 in Opnes) this afternoon at both College (U16 & Open) and SCC (U14 & U15), for the FIRST time in a decade or two! There are staggered games at age groups most years in make up fixtures. Good to see the “Amalakites – a Skonk Nicholson & Jos Robson term for SCC – back in action against College”

And lightning stops play ⚡⚡ :(

Matches started in 34 degrees in hot dry conditions….. but by the end of the first matched (B teams and 3rds) – the wind had picked up and skies had darkened a bit. Half way through the second round (age group A and 2nds) – strong winds – a driving rain and even light hail peppered the boys and spectators alike. Just before full time – lightning was closer than the allowable – so play was stopped.

The fist teas waited for weather to clear and eventually trotted on to the paddock about 20 minutes after scheduled start.

The captains, coaches and ref had a quick meeting on Satans Table (the cricket pitch on Goldstones) – and decided that player safety at this juncture was far more important than a game in non-ideal conditions and the game was called off.

The results – College ran out comfortable winners – but SCC U15B & U14A in particular looked good and held College a lot more than was expected before the games. Once the College teams started playing to a structured approach and not letting the SCC game plan disrupt their flow – the tries started flowing.

There is a lot of good work obviously being done by the boys and their coaching teams – and this looks good for a great Midlands season ahead.

Both schools face visiting opposition from Bloemfontein in their opening fixtures (St Andres and Grey Bloem).

@RnR: Gaan ‘n goeie wedstryd oplewer.

So daar kan dalk potensiaal wees.

@Valkie: Ja Curro se rugby..gaan net soos Rob baie optel. Ken Curro coach baie goed, was onnie by NHS so 4 jaar terug.. great ou met passie vir rugby en n liefde vir die kinders.

I see a bad moon rising ……

@Queenian: I think it is a little early to get a proper picture. There is a lot more experience this year, so that will help out. At least they are playing a few games ahead of the season. Jumping into the first fixture against KES away from home is never a good idea.
