KZN u18 youth week trials 2016

The always interesting and sometimes controversial KZN provincial youth week selection process is approaching it’s business end.

For this year a new player rating system has been adopted – see the blog here: http://schoolboyrugby.co.za/?p=12951 for more details of how it works.

As usual both the main trials (Wed 11 May 2016) and final trials (Wed 18 May 2016) take place at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.

The main trials fixtures are:

10 : 00 – 11 : 00 SHARKS vs STORMERS
11 : 00 – 12 : 00 BULLS vs LIONS
12 : 00 – 13 : 00 CHEETAHS vs KINGS
13 : 00 – 14 : 00 LUNCH
14 : 00 – 15 : 00 CRUSADERS vs HURRICANES
15 : 00 – 16 : 00 BLUES vs CHIEFS

From these trials players will be picked to play matches at final trials.

When last checked the KZN u18 selectors were:

Convenor Quentin Reynolds KZNRU
Selector / Coach CW Rudi Dames Glenwood
Selector / Coach AW Jeremy McLaren Glenwood
Selector / Coach CD Antonie Prinsloo Kearsney
Selector Gerald Pyoos George Campbell
Selector Tony Richter Hilton
Selector Jono Piek Clifton
Selector Kevin Smith Maritzburg College

Does anyone have the full team sheets for the final KZN Trials on Wednesday? Beet, surely these must be out by now?

@Grasshopper: If there were independent selectors then if Glenwood gets 15 of the boys through there can be no finger pointing. They are clearly the best side in 2016 and they should have the bulk of the boys representing KZN.

Why can’t they just have the head coach from the 8 big schools as selectors. They pick a team of players not from their school. Put the names into a hat and from there pick the squad based on most votes. That would be fair.

At least they are moving in the right direction. In the past it was Glenwood who represented Durban South and that will have its benefits as they can use their school calls etc As far as quotas go. They are here to stay and that will affect a lot of kids. There seems to be a large number at the trials so it will make the selectors jobs that much harder. I still feel that there should be independent selectors provided by the union so that there can be no finger pointing at bias towards a Glenwood who has 12 of the 25 – you know what I am getting at. I hope they pick a competitive side to represent our province and come away with 3 from 3.

@Grasshopper: Seems like Chiefs and Blues are the top selections.

Anyone want to have a go at selecting CW and AW teams from early season form?

From what I’ve seen – Richardson, Richie and Craze from Kearsney are contenders.

I could be wrong but it looks like the Chiefs trial team is the preliminary “A team” going into the trials.

What is very interesting is Jerome’Bossr’s name in the mix. He hasn’t played all season. I wonder if that is due to an injury or by choice to focus on cricket. It seems it could be the former. I would say that is suitable unfair going in based on reputation instead of form…

I see Richardson from Kearsney is in at #2 – I think there are some quality 2’s already and he’d be better served in the loose trio

@Bush: let’s see who actually makes it. For me Glenwood certainties are Van Rooyen, Van der Mescht, Brummer (VC), Holtzhausen, Maduna & Lubbe. Real star quality players. Some might think Brummer is too small but he is a great leader.

@McCulleys Workshop: Ja shame, injury against College. Talking about College, bit of a surprise they have 20 boys in the lineup. We have to be real here, Glenwood, Kearsney, and DHS should make up the bulk. I haven’t seen Westville play, but from the reports they seem good. Then you have Hilton. I don’t think Second Team players should make up the short fall.

@Bush: Don’t get only 4 players from Hilton, although they have 1 or 2 u19’s who don’t qualify. I see 15 from MHS is out for the rest of the season.

@oldschool: 5 fits into 64 many more times.

Hopper not been Anti-Glenwood 8-O. The amount of players you get into the teams, is quite like the quota system. As long as they deserve to be there. Having the best side in KZN for sure, followed by Kearsney, then so the list can go on. Having Second team players make the list before other First Players is a little wild.

Still seems odd to me – many of the college “non- PDP’s” are actually in the 2nd team – and I’m sure it’s the same for GW. So why invite so many?

Secondly – there are plenty of class quota players in the various schools 1st XV set ups IMO? Just saying.

I certainly am happy that some fringe players who feel they may have been overlooked by a school coach – or could be the combination that KZN are looking for are getting a shot – but once again – it seems strange that 48 players can come from 2 schools.

@Rugger fan: they include 2nd team players because if they can’t find a quota player in the 1st team they have to look at 2nd team players.

@Grasshopper: The point remains the same – 48 players from 2 schools???? Far too many – and that is excluding their U19 players who are not eligible.

and this in a year when College are not looking like the clear second strongest team in KZN?
