Dale beats Queen’s 29-19 in their 174th meeting – match report

Preview: Queen’s will host Dale at their famous ground The Rec on their Reunion Day. Within the context of what has been building up to be tough match 15 on 15, there are some interesting individual battles set to take place as well. Promising up and coming hooker Gareth Heidtman goes up against the battering ram that is Bubele Gongqa. At  no.8 it’s Johan van Heerden against Ronald Jiri. Inside centre matches Juan du Randt against Siyamthanda Mgubo while on the wing Mihlali Peter has to prove his worth against Luyolo Khuse.

Match Report compliments of Queen’s College:

In a highly anticipated match, two of the Borders’ archrivals met at Queen’s College. The conditions at the Recreation Grounds were perfect for running rugby.

The hosts started the match like a house on fire and Justin Kuyler opened the scoring for Queen’s in the second minute, which was converted by Albré Wagener. After the restart it was once again the hosts who were on the front foot and after the some patient phase play scored their second try of the match for a 12-0 lead.

Dale managed to gain possession after the opening few minutes and Courtney Winnaar was successful with a penalty for the visitors. Dale was the next team to score and controlled the rest of play for the first half after some poor defence and inaccurate kicking. The first try came for the visitors after a poor midfield kick which saw the Dale fullback go on a jinxing run and dot down next to the posts, which was converted by Winnaar. Queen’s failed to learn from their earlier mistake and another poor kick was punished when Winnaar dotted down for the visitors’ second try, which he converted. The third try for the visitors was scored by the Dale wing after some good phase play by the visitors. Winnaar was successful with the conversion and Dale enjoyed a 24-12 lead at half time.

The second half, whilst a low scoring affair, was a keenly contested half between both teams who threw everything into attack and defence. Dale was first to open their accounts with an unconverted try in the corner and they enjoyed a 29-12 lead. The Queenians managed to produce a good passage of play just before the final whistle to score a converted try. Queen’s lost the game to Dale 19-29.

Queen’s will rue the fact that that their tactical kicking on the day, was of poor quality, and that they lacked the necessary accuracy to win such a tough encounter, but in true Queenian spirit the boys will put the game behind them and look forward to their next game which is on Friday 24March against Welkom Gimnasium at the Recreation Grounds.

@QC86: After Dale blitzed them with 3 tries in 10 minutes QC went flat like somebody let the air out of a balloon.

Ive watched many a Dale/Queens game in my time, but I honestly cannot recall a more dominant performance by a over a queens side at 1st team level. The Dalians were just a class above. Good to see far more adept tactical and structured play which seemed to pay off alot. Our twelve, who is our captain, was all over the big 12 from queens, was a defensive spectacle. Tactical kicking from queens let them down big time! Coming back from 12 – 0 is something that is not often achieved, let alone dominating them in all departments!!! Well done dalians

@Playa: The Under 13A game was a treat here were two very good teams and although the QC team is really good one of the best at this age group I have seen for a very long time, the Dale team is also very good just came up against a freakishly good team and both these teams must be watched in the future if QC/Dale can hang on to these players things look good for there rugby.

Mind blowing that it is only April and this was the QC Under 13A , 15th game already for the season which they have won all including schools like Monnas/Wynberg/Melopark/Dale and many others.

Only thing that will stop this team this year is size.

@Playa: Watched the game and will say after 15 minutes thought QC had it in the bag they were 12 nil up and then a 10 minutes 24 point blitz by Dale which was really good after that QC just seemed to go flat . Must say QC missed the forwards that were out hurt there pack just did not seem the same without them.

The other games in the senior’s were all pretty tight with QC just edging them all.

Under 16A Dale were never in it and were lucky not to lose by another 20 points this QC team is really good, they don’t quite have the size to be un-beaten but will give Grey and Selborne a close run this year.

Under 15A game was the game of the day for me and Dale’s defence was out the top draw stopping at least 4 certain tries and came away with a win against the odds. Well done Dale

Under 14A game was very close and beside one or two blunders by QC which cost them the game a fare reflection would have been a draw. Both teams have very good mobile players with very good ball skills but are very small, but I am afraid will get 50 points put past them by Grey and Selborne. The little QC no 8 if he grows and bulks up will be a star in the making.

Otherwise a very enjoyable day and besides the Under 16 game which was very one sided all games were very close, with QC winning 10 and Dale 4
