Kearsney beats Glenwood 13-11 – match report

KCvsGW

From  Kearsney – Working Words

Kearsney hosted Glenwood on a hot and humid afternoon for what proved to be a very exciting and closely contested match.

Kearsney got the scoreboard ticking with a long distance penalty kick by James Tedder. He repeated this with another monster kick, to give the hosts a six point lead after 10 minutes. Kearsney impressed with their resolute defence against a speedy Glenwood back line and hard running forwards.

Kearsney was soon awarded another very convertible penalty, but captain Tristan Dixon decide to have a scrum instead. He justified his decision with a planned striker move to score Kearsney’s only try, which Tedder converted for a 13 – 0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Kearsney let slip a few opportunities with poor set phase play which the opposition exploited well. Glenwood was awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time which Boss converted for a 13–3 score line.

Glenwood was the first to score with a penalty in the second half. Both teams were prepared to give the ball air but, due to the humidity, the slippery ball made handling very difficult and it was often spilled in contact and many errors occurred.

Kearsney hooker Joshua van Vuuren received a technical yellow card and Glenwood attacked with determination during this period and was awarded with an unconverted try which drew them very close to a 11-13 deficit.

Kearsney defended well but sadly did not enjoy any quality set phase possession to pose any serious threats on attack. Dixon and Tedder were the outstanding performers for Kearsney.

@Grasshopper: I need a marketing exec. Interested? You fit the bill perfectly!

Jokes aside, any number of schools will do. It all depends where you feel most comfortable. That will sway it at the end. Obviously a bit of persuasion from the school is not harmfull to the cause.

Agreed guys, I actually had a good family friend ask if I had a 12 year old boy where would I send him, gov school only due to budgets. I said you cannot really go wrong with College, Glenwood, Westville or Northwood. All great schools succeeding in different area’s. It’s up to the parent to decide what is best for their son. DHS is getting back to that group of four. This friend said she had attended all of those schools but was most impressed by Glenwood’s level of professionalism in all areas. She was especially impressed by the ‘good day mame’ she got from all the boys. With teenage boys discipline forms a very big part in their development.

@GreenBlooded: Well said – boys are really doing their best – and GW remains one of the great SA schools, with lots of great traditions and very proud OB and boys.

As a parent – like with most good schools – the boys are generally courteous, well mannered and a credit as upstanding citizens. School policy and other “higher” issues do not make everything about the school unsavoury. They are still getting a LOT right.

    @oldschool:

It’s unfortunate that the frustration around imports/recruitment etc is often directed collectively at the Glenwood boys. You are quite correct – they are committed to their school and as many have noted are the most well mannered and respectful boys you will find anywhere. For this alone I am proud to be a GW old boy. We must remember that the boys are the pawns in the whole recruitment/import debacle – the anger should not be directed at them, they are just schoolboys who are committed to their school, their team-mates and trying to do the best they can.

@Grasshopper: those a great results for Kearsney , besides last year each game very tight ….. it must be the best record of any school against the Wood of recent times !!!!

I thought that all the games on Saturday were played in a good spirit , most games were competitive , the glenwood boys are mostly very disciplined rugga players and have great manners off the field .

There is a big difference in results at home vs away and when we play at Glenwood , we hardly win a game , at home we always come up with a handful of victories ….

I really believe that this victory is great for KZN rugga and pretty much proves to Hilton that they pulled the fixture prematurely , resulting in their 2015 very capable side not having the opportunity to play the best which is very unfair on the boys !!

One has to say , from reading this and remembering the dark days of 2012, that they have returned, its been said today, 2012,2013,2014, this issue with recruitment is wrong and distasteful , and it shows, what can be fortunate is that as there exists real skill with these players is they will gel and then win, and this is positive and negative , as it reinforces the procurement policy leading to a winning team, but its looses soul , and its becoming tasteless.

Well done KC, I think it would have been a different result if it was 2nd term , but I have always noted its better to build up and rather not play these BIG games so early in the season, .

@Grasshopper: that 8 days last year the KC boys would like to erase from the record books- Firstly MHS cleaned their pipes then the biggest humiliation in my boys rugby career so far. Up till then they had been very competitive .
Life skills on how to lose and pick yourself up were learned and are better for it.
May the contest continue for many years to come.

    Kearsney won: 29
    % won: 57%
    Drawn: 3
    Biggest win: 86-13 (2014)
    Biggest loss: 3-38 (2001)

So it’s been quite close over the years.

Also, to throw a kid from a little school like Stoffberg into a 1st team game vs Kearsney is unfair. He is still learning the position and should have been started in the 3rds for the first few weeks and build it up. Like throwing a lamb to slaughter. He looked like a deer in headlights. Massive potential there, dwarfs most players…

@Pedantic: agreed, seen it derail the Glenwood 2012 season with Marne Coetzee, then Warren Potgieter and others. I just can’t understand how the Glenwood decision makers didn’t learn from those messy episodes. The young lock, was actually a centre two years ago. Maybe I bit of a Eben Etzebeth, growing massively now. Being back means he has to learn how to be a forward quickly. He might lack the ‘aggro’ required for a lock, time will tell. Sounds like my season in 96 where the 3rd team only lost 1 game, but 2nds & 1st’s barely won a game. I remember the 3rds actually beating the 2nds in practice….politics politics!

@Grasshopper: I think we’re starting to experience the harsh reality of late recruitment – it was always going to rear it’s ugly head sometime.

It only takes one or two acquaintances of the demoted players to entice negativity and sadly, human nature kicks in and others join in to “kick them when they’re down”.

It’s pretty clear that Bossr has something special, but unable to deliver on the day – let’s hope he has the mental toughness to overcome all the negativity, else it may well be better for him to return home to his support base and regain his form.

The young lock looks like an incredible athlete, one can see straight away the work he puts in to be in that condition, unfortunately he was nowhere in the match, I don’t remember seeing much of him at all. In fact, you mentioned before that Xaba was off form – IMO Xaba was 300% better than the new youngster and I felt he had a decent game.

Most of the long term GW players demoted due to recruits were playing in the 3rd team – interesting that they were the only opens in the top 4 to win

@QC86: Boils down to family dynamics as well though. Some kids are taught to do as their parents say, and that’s that. In my mom’s words, “This is not a democracy, you did not vote for me to be you parent, and I did not campaign for you to be my child”…though the campaign bit can be debatable
And then there’s the whole naivety debate as well. Not too many 15 year olds have the will to say no to a carrot being dangled…especially when their folks think it’s a good idea. I really feel for the young man.I hope he has character enough to ignore the noise.

@QC86: harsh – not the kids fault – fault lies with the parents and school exco who actively seek and encourage the moves. This is not a professional footballer moving from Liverpool to Man U where shareholders, fans and season ticket holders have every right to question the modus operandi and ability of the player – seems some perspective is needed in school boy rugger.

In my opinion – fault lies with parents first and foremost

@Rugger fan: Yes but some poor kids dream has been smashed by a headmaster that allows the wholesale purchase of players,is one kids dream more important than another.I think if you are a purchase and you don’t perform you should expect a bit of flack, very harsh at schoolboy level i know, but as soon as you accept money you are no longer protected by innocence. What do you think??

@Rugger fan: I wanted to but decided not to cause a scene. Poor kid, but hopefully he didn’t hear much of it. Every player was lambasted, even poor Mukendi who had a mare. Overall it was just a nightmare game for the boys, they will come back hard though :-)

@Grasshopper: Very sad,but if you mess with the natural ebb and flow of life,in this case school boys, there will always be a reaction.Bossr a much better 15 than 10 but as beet says GW are sorted at 15.Full of talent, just hoping the boo’s don’t crack him,and knowing him quiet well he would have hated it and not to speak about his dad,I won’t be surprised if he’s not back at Dale already.

@QC86: yep, I was on the stand next to the Glenwood schoolboys, lots a lip from one particular parent. Didn’t like most of it, very negative. I was only shouting ‘support’, talk to each other boys, come on etc. This bloke attacked all the players and shouted ‘Bossr go back to Selborne’. Bossr didn’t have a great game, running laterally and into his own back line players, but the kid has serious skill & talent. He just needs time with the backs and better, quicker ball from the scrummie. Reminds me of the 2014 Glenwood fly half, Jonas now playing for the Lions in Vodacom Cup
