Martizburg College will be going on a short tour to the land of the “Purple People Eaters” during March.
Their schedule consists of games against Voortrekker of Bethlehem (16h00 Thu 12 March) and Hentie Cilliers (10h00 Sat 14 March).
“Purple People Eaters” was a nickname given to the North Free State rugby team by former Natal captain Dick Cocks in his popular Natal Mercury column, Cocks and Bull. Northern Free State (now called the Griffons) played a role in keeping Natal (now called the Sharks) out of the Currie Cup Rugby A-Section during part of the 1980’s, a decade during which Maritzburg College rugby was at a peak and they were respect as one of the strongest rugby schools in the country.
College’s preseason includes warm-up matches against TBA opponents at the Voortrekker Night Series on successive Fridays, 27 February and 06 March.

@chopper: Excellent stuff. I look forward to you start showing that support.
@Playa: support schoolboy rugby…love it!
@chopper: Any particular school that you support?
@kosie: HAHAHAHA!
@chopper: Bru – you’re going to have to get off this horse sooner or later, it’s called bias confirmation, basically if you look for something hard enough you will find it.
It’s not about the planning at all – the canoeing calendar is decided by the KZN Canoe Union because canoeing is not done on a nice piece of flat grass or astro where a first aid team pitches up and helps. Canoeing is on wild stretches of water miles from anywhere, the logistics of competing are much more difficult and safety has to be the first concern – the death on this years Dusi a stark case in point (where despite the best efforts made, people can die). Remember that canoeing is a year round sport, so it’s not the end of the season completely, just the discipline changes now, the river season ends this weekend, they move to flat water, slalom and sprints which not all boys are required to do. But this weekend they finish what they started, so I’m fine with that. Better than fine actually, it’s imperative, just as you said here —>
“I seem to remember watching a T20 game between College and DHS live on TV about 4 or 5 years ago (if my memory serves me correctly it was the franchise final to determine who would represent the Dolphins at the National Schools T20 finals) when the cricket team were missing 3 front line players who had been forced to attend 1st XV rugby practice by the then headmaster and his deputy who also happened to be the MIC Rugby at the time. I think it was Andy Capastagno who nearly swallowed his microphone when he interviewed the College captain who told him that the team had 3 enforced changes from the one that had won the local regional final……and that they were not injured but at a rugby practice!!!!! “.
Fish or fowl Mr Chopper? … or is it which ever way the wind blows at the time?. My son is fulfilling his obligations to canoeing. What makes that different to 4 or 5 years ago – or was that just bad planning as well?
Surely all summer sports finish on the same weekend. Sad that your boy has to miss out on the first hockey game. Sounds like some pretty poor fixture planning to me.
@Gungets Tuft: Tuftie, every game played is a friendly game…two halves of 35 minutes running time…..each and every Saturday. Agree that any defeat is not fatal although there would be some old boys who would disagree with you wholeheartedly about that because it’s rugby after all! Take it as fact, the season started last Thursday. The DHS encounter will be one sided again and then it’s Westville I see…..then Saints Festival with Grey PE(tough game) followed by two easy runs…St Albans, who are very average this year, and some development outfit! So in all a pretty decent run around at the start of the season, before some heavy traffic arrives. Enjoyed the gutsy Kearsney result over the Greenblooded, Grasshopping Umbiloburgers on Sat I have to say. Wasn’t surprised either about parental comments along lines of ” *****” go back to Selborne!” I wonder if and when the alleged HMA will be adhered to by the AUTHORITIES at the “Wood?” Isn’t that the lad who, according to sources within that establishment ” just arrived at the school gates one day?” And old Grasshopper seems to haver “never seen” some of the team that did duty against Kearsney. Lastly domyounhave any idea where the College vs Glenwood game is being played this year….is it confirmed for Growthpoint Kings Park?
@chopper: Don’t know about how they feel, pre-season friendlies are what they are, if they learned something they will have achieved what they set out to do. I don’t have as much at stake in College sport success or lack of it as you might imagine I do, my expectations of what the boys get out of the College experience is more turning out the whole man. A defeat or two is not fatal, might in fact prepare them better for life. But I’ve regurgitated that ad nauseum here so will just leave it there. The season starts next week against DHS. I will miss that, my boy involved in compulsory canoeing. He’s a hockey player but has to fulfill the responsibility to his primary summer sport first. It’s not all about rugby and hockey …
@chopper:
No worries mate. See you at the Festival no doubt.
@Gungets Tuft: I hear that the College team went down to Hentie Cilliers today…26-27. Any details available from the game? I would imagine some disappointment at the 2 results up in Bethlehem?
@Roger: Just saw your post now about Jeppe. Nope, only the highest regard for Jeppe, fine, proud school. You won’t find a College man, Old Boy, parent or player, taking any team for granted. It seems that Chopper might think that Jeppe are an easy victim but since we don’t know who he supports I can’t speak for him.
Remember that College chose the Jeppe festival rather than Wildeklawer (I think I’m right there) – that should say everything that needs be said about the relationship between the schools.
@chopper: Excellent, so we’ll see you pro something shortly then. Perhaps a school jersey choice will help, we will then know who you support rather than just oppose?
Your comment about loving rugby more than anything else does seem to contradict what you said earlier about rugby seeming above other sports at College, “going back in time”. All very cryptic …
@GreenBlooded: @greenblooded Anti nothing pal! Follow all schoolboy rugby closely mate- in fact, I love schoolboy rugby more than anything. Not sure what dots you seem to be joining either?
@Roger: Just having some fun here. It does however make me think of a world renowned rugby administrator who almost resigned when he saw the 1987 Springbok rugby jerseys used against the Cavaliers. Somehow the world has moved on from there
@kosie: no problem with that – festivals are a costly exercise. Logos on 1st XV jerseys are the pits
Will we one day see the Mercedes Maritzburg College 1st XV playing in their kit sponsored lekka Mr Price jerseys on the hallowed Game Store Goldstones field – I fokken hope not
@beet: What specific attributes would your Knowledge Enlightning Subject or Agent KES have to have? Probably no branded attire, probably nobody north of the boerewors curtain!
@kosie: You owe me a new keyboard on my phone, just spat beer all over this one.
@kosie:
@Roger: No matter what your feeling is regarding sponsorship, I will still attend the Standard Bank KES Festival.
At least I will feel comfortable knowing Beet’s Agent KES will also attend.
And I believe that several teams from Grey primary is/ was in Pretoria yesterday to play rugby It was compulsory for all the Bulls to attend(except for the 70% who are OGs) And I notice a few ego trips with supporting stats. If only that damn school in the centre of the country was not real, “our stats would have looked so much better”
@Roger: Sponsor get’s advertising, otherwise fokol. The school get’s kit, otherwise fokol. It’s great that some schools can function without sponsors, but the reality is that most schools won’t survive without them
@Tang: Are you referring to:
Vital Bishops
Auric Rondebosch
Mr Price Wynberg
@Roger – When KES and PBHS play, one of the best features is the absence of sponsors logos on the kit. Take a walk through schools and have a look at the first team rugby pics – the transformation from kit without logos to kit with logos is scary.
How many traditional rugby schools don’t have logos? I can name the following:
KES, Pretoria Boys, Parktown Boys, St Johns, Bishops, Rondebosch, Wynberg and St Stithians. I am now sure about the Eastern Cape and Border schools but the number is really small.
@Ploegskaar: silly me – of course the sponsor gets fokkal – their logo is never visible under the mud (badda bing badda bong)!
@Ploegskaar: who gets fokkal – the school or the sponsor – enlighten me again
@Vleis: No doubt, that shows quality…but only quality
@Ploegskaar: @BoishaaiPa: You could well be correct that quality of the teams from the WC are better than those from the North.
Only one school in the North publishes its historic results against all other schools, so I had a quick look and found the following:
Affies results v the A league Cape schools:
Bishops: Played 3, won 3
Boland Landbou: Played 4, won 3 and lost 1
Paarl Boys: Played 19, won 12 and lost 7
Paarl Gim: Played 14, won 6, lost 7 and drew 1
Paul Roos Gim: Played 17, won 9, lost 7 and drew 1
Rondebosch: Played 4, won 1, lost 2 and drew 1
SACS: Haven’t played
Wynberg: Played 5, won 5
Those results aren’t too shabby from a poor quality team from the North.
@BoishaaiPa: At least they get a brief glimpse of quality, class and culture when the WC teams play at the Gauteng ERF’s every year. Standard fare for us every Saturday of course and worth every cent!
@Roger: They get fokol, so consider yourself enlightened
@Ploegskaar: Apparently they don’t pay for watching school matches up North ..but I don’t blame them..I wont pay to watch such kak rugby either!
@Ploegskaar: no idea – enlighten me
call me a traditionalist but just don’t like it
@Roger: What exactly do you think a kit sponsor gets from a school apart from a bit of advertising?
No, but I think Pinotage attended the game- Im almost sure he did
@Vleis: – thanks Vleis – always the million dollar question – how do a very successful u16 group adapt in their first year at U18/19 level – time will tell
@Playa: ridiculous@Rugger fan: they charge at Glenwood don’t they?
@Roger: @bison: @Tang:Re Jeppe: the following must be considered:
1. The current u18s are a relatively weak group by Jeppe’s new improved standards.
2. The current u17s are an exceptionally strong group – last year’s u16 age group was almost certainly the best in Jeppe’s history.
3. I’m not sure how many u19 players Jeppe has in the school. I know of one provincial player who is in the grade below his age, so I’m not sure how many more there are?
4. Have Jeppe brought in any new players? I know that Jeppe brought in two new players in last years u16A team.
I’m pretty certain that Jeppe will have a good 1st team this year but points 3 and 4 above will determine whether they will be able to run with the big dogs (Affies, Monnas, etc). Remember how poorly Affies did (by their great standards) in 2014 due to a weak matric group. Affies g11s last year were very strong, but sometimes the younger players need time to adapt to open rugby.
@Roger: Team naming rights are certainly no jest…or did you think Kynoch Noord-Kaap was a new Super Rugby franchise?
@TJ: had long debates at KES about it (jersey sponsors that is) – there is no shortage of interest from both sides – hopefully KES can afford to keep the wolves at bay for the foreseeable future
unfortunately KES succumbed to the numbers on the jersey a few years back when the rugby started to be televised – a believe that was not negotiable from the broadcasters. Not sure how Bishops still get away with it …….
naming rights of fields and teams ! Surely you jest!
@Gungets Tuft: Correct – same grade as my boy. Got there end of Gr9 – was one age group up. So first year of rugger was in Gr 10 but straight into open group (u/19) as an u/17 player whilst his classmates were playing u/16.
Entrance fee? Where?
@Rugger fan: and an entrance fee – that’s the pits
@BOG: Take on the game… one of were there – otherwise I’m sure we would have shared?
Do you have any feedback? Looking forward to the Hentie Cilliers feedback too. Will be at MC for their rugby trials tomorrow for the rest of the boys not currently in the 1stXV squad.
@Bog: That would be very nice of you if you could be so kind to give us your unique take on the game?
@Roger: Agreed Roger. I can live with the jerseys (and even the need to have numbers on the back) – but not naming rights on the teams themselves? And grounds? And then down to age group?
@Tang: my absolute pet hate is sponsorship on 1st XV jerseys – I understand the financial needs but thank Providence that KES and Boys High have so far resisted.
The aunties have got the handbags out this morning. What about the rugby, MC vs Voortrekker? Or would you like me to give you an overview of the SA economy for the next 5 yrs? I remember, after last yrs fixture MC vs GCB, the discussion after the match, sounded more like a gastronomic evaluation of Bloems eateries and dancing locations, but very little rugby.
In depth knowledge of College sport, specially cricket, and College sportsmen.
Disgruntled with College and certain elements of the leadership.
Anti Glenwood
Anti College Rugby.
The dots are starting to join up!!
@chopper: Correct, I was wrong, but he arrived in 4th term grade 9 unless I’m misinformed.
@Rugger fan: It certainly looks like the left and right hands are not joined to the same body down there in the Burragh! Rugby rules again……..going back in time it would seem?
@Gungets Tuft: Guma is U18 and in Grade 11 this year Tuftie!
@Bwana: That’s very strange as he has been a regular starting XI player for the past month or so! Very puzzling decision but am not at all surprised to be honest. Wonder what part he could have played in a 6-0 win?
@Pedantic: Guma started in Grade 10 but was under 17
Strange – Bowman’s name is on the Sri Lanka touring team list?
My sources at Red Black White HQ tell me that Bowman was given permission to play on the tour of the Northern States by the Director of Cricket/1st XI Coach as he is not going on the Sri Lankan tour. Getkate has stayed behind in the Hollow to play in the day/night final against Hilton
@Gungets Tuft: Guma is U18 this year!!
@chopper: Who ever claimed College don’t recruit, but perhaps you can back up the “poach” comment. The Guma saga was debated to death, why not just paste the link to the last time it was discussed.
@Pedantic: Guma is U19 this year, nothing untoward, he hasn’t repeated a high school year, there is no Grade 11 repeat to justify a loophole in the HMA, so no similarity to past cases at all.
As for cricketers playing rugby, let’s all just check team sheets later in the year, but for now why not just keep it tidy and keep boys names out of it unless you’ve got something complementary to say.
Busy day on the roads today, it’s not going to be me debating this.
@beet: Have a peep at gc.co.za/Images/files/Rugby%20(Final).pdf This is the program for the rugby at Diamantveld, but it demonstrates how a larger school(GCB in this case) can participate with all its teams against a combination of smaller schools, by “mixing and matching” the different teams. No real excuse for larger schools not doing this more often.(Not on your program by the way)
@Gungets Tuft: Guma played Boland GK so couldn’t have started beginning of Gr10 unless it’s a similair situation to the “Hilton doing it Wright” debacle.
@beet: Sounds like a cracker of a game!!! Okes are probably tired from a 6 month pre-season build up !
@GreenBlooded: Had a wonderful cricket season with my son. T20 finals in Stellenbosch and other great encounters. But now it is the time of the oval ball again. I am pretty sure I will see you in Pmaritzberg in good time.
In 2000 it took me 9 hours and 51 minutes to get there from Durban. Wearing Asics, a vest and Pollyshorts!
@Gungets Tuft: @Gungets Tuft: Munangi arrived in grade 10, Chikwezvero and Jaravani in grade 11, and Guma in grade 10. “College don’t recruit or poach!”
On the “cricketers who play rugby” debate, did Bowman go to Bethlehem? If not it looks like him and Getkate are the said cricketers. I seem to remember watching a T20 game between College and DHS live on TV about 4 or 5 years ago (if my memory serves me correctly it was the franchise final to determine who would represent the Dolphins at the National Schools T20 finals) when the cricket team were missing 3 front line players who had been forced to attend 1st XV rugby practice by the then headmaster and his deputy who also happened to be the MIC Rugby at the time. I think it was Andy Capastagno who nearly swallowed his microphone when he interviewed the College captain who told him that the team had 3 enforced changes from the one that had won the local regional final……and that they were not injured but at a rugby practice!!!!!
@Roger: Jeppe 016a beet Affies last year as well. Do you know how many of these Jeppe grade 11 ‘s will play for the first team this year?
@Pinotage: To confirm what Pinotage wrote.
FINAL SCORE : VOORTREKKER 0 COLLEGE 6
Apparently College dominated but could not finish largely due to good defence by Voortrekker
@Gungets Tuft @ Rugger Fan – Always a great pleasure to have MC in Pretoria. An honest hard school boy contest with great respect between the schools.
I have attended over 10 of these and unfortunately don’t have many left.
As far as I know, every boy will have been at PBHS from grade 8. If they were not at PBHS in grade 8, they have moved to the school for a valid relocation reason. There is not one single boy on a rugby scholarship!
Look forward to seeing the Red, Black and White shortly. By the time the first fixture comes around on 2 May, each team will have had many significant fixtures behind them.
@Pinotage: interesting, in deed!
@Tang: I look forward to my first PBHS trip this year – so hope to see you there too!
@Cappie: Yebo. Final score. Very gutsy defence by Voortrekker. Lots of squandered opportunities as can be expected early season
@Tang: Boet – we’re brother schools, only respect from us. I will almost certainlyt make that trip – it will be the last PBHS weekend away for my son, I want to be there that weekend.
Will all the PBHS boys have been there since Grade 8??
@Gungets Tuft – Just remember when you play us up in Pretoria on 2 May the PBHS side will be made up of 100% pure PBHS. No bursaries, no acquisitions, no logo on the jersey.
@Pinotage: final score?
@Tang: Let’s see who makes the team before I subject myself to the PT. But Guma arrived beginning of Grade 10 – if you missed that …. welcome to planet earth, enjoy, you will find we are a generous if slightly strange species.
Munangi – Grade 9 I believe.
Other 2, not sure, but one grade 10, the other grade 11 I think, and if not mistaken the parents arrived from Zim, but I will accept correction from someone more in the know. I’m active here on the blog but my boy doesn’t even play rugby, I know some of the boys well because my son is mates with them, but I’m no Grassy in terms of my knowledge of the players and the teams. Sorry.
I’m pretty sure Beet has the skinny …
M/College 6 Voortrekker 0
@Gungets Tuft – What is the history of Xolisa Guma, Kudzai Munangi, Tim Jaravani and Tanaka Chikwezvero? How do you think these four will affect the College recruitment scorecard?
@GreenBlooded: I can see a few Bowls Club Transkei dumpies in my future … ?
@Pinotage:
What is happening with the College / Grey match this year? I guess it will be at College this time round? It was great for ou Gin-n-Tonic and I to make your aquaintance at Grey last year and it would be good to see you in Maritzburra this year. I might even introduce you to ou Rugger-Fan who has also dusted off his whistle and will hopefully also be reffing a match or 3 when you guys tour.
@beet: Currently a bit of thunder and lightning in Bethlehem. Good or bad omen?
@Rugger fan: I remember a few years ago I was a hit amongst a few Bulls twitter fans after CJ Stander bounced a player and I tweeted “Standerstruck!”
More mileage available from this College youngster’s name for sure!
@Dixon’s: Dixon’s – I wonder if Thunder will get a contract at the Stormers (sorry – too weak)! :P
@Cappie: Nope, sorry. I’m towing myself stukkend a long way from home, hence my terrible spelling. I can check up once the match is over, or perhaps College will tweet updates.
@Gungets Tuft: will you be able to keep us posted about the score between Voortrekker and College this afternoon?
@GreenBlooded: Thunder…. an inspiring name for a rugby captain to have if ever i heard one!
@chopper: College play Hilton in the Midlands 45 over cricket final on Friday at 2pm. At least 2 very strong 1st Fifteen candidates in the squad.
The touring squad for Sri Lanka can be found here – go your gums.
http://www.maritzburgcollege.org.za/home/news
Commons injured.
Don’t believe everything you hear. We hear of promising crickers giving up rugby all over the place, the best is to check out the programme on match day.
@Roger – Very good point about Jeppe. They should be very good this year. I just wonder how they will handle the high levels of expectation being built up.
When PBHS played polo against Jeppe a few weeks back, there was lots of talk about how they plan on having a successful season.
I have seen many great u16 sides flop at open level and many poor u16 sides produce at open level.
@chopper:
Kelton Thunder captained the team at the Voortrekker tournament – not sure if that’s a permanent thing or not. He certainly has loads of passion and commitment.
@chopper: Chopper – the MC 1st XI are gearing up for a tour to Sri Lanka towards the end of the second term (northern hemisphere cricket season) – http://www.maritzburgcollege.org.za/home/news/223-cricket-team-to-tour-sri-lanka
And there are a few familar names on both lists if you see the squad.
@Gungets Tuft: Easy run at the Festivals Tuftie…….is your pick for skipper a loosie by any chance? And what boys are out for “other sport” – wasn’t the last summer sport fixture last Saturday? And didn’t see any 1st XV players in the 1st XI cricket team. Heard that last years 2nd XV had wisely hung up his boots if he is the cricketer being referred to. I see no Commons in the group- is he injured or retired?
@Gungets Tuft: @chopper: If you fellas think Jeppe is an easy game this year then good luck to you – their U16A side last year was ranked 2nd in the country after Monnas and they have a few returning from their very successful 2014 team. In my opinion – they will be the team to beat in the Northvaal this year along with Affies and Monnas.
@chopper: You named names, and you made it plain that their parents have influence (which implies that the first team coach and director of rugby are lackies of these Old Boys). It also implies that the boys have done nothing to justify their selection (“Old boys sons in ***and *** are indeed a surprise but hey, if you have influence you have influence”).
Not buying it.
As for captaincy – not sure, just remmeber there are boys out for other sport and injury – my pick of captain is on that list, but the injury might be longer term so I’m going to stay silent on that.
Easy run – OK, if you say so. Glenwood, House, Affies, GCB, Grey PE, all top 10 possibilities.
@Gungets Tuft: Just an observation Tuftie-nothing negative at all! Am looking forward to seeing how the team performs. I see quite an easy run to they have with only Grey PE and possibly Jeppe as relatively stiff opposition in the Festival rugby they are playing this year. Pity the team aren’t up against the real SA school powerhouses like Paul Roos, the two Paarl powerhouses etc. Do you have any idea who the team will be skippered by? That could be an interesting choice in itself.
Neither *** or *** are a surprise to me, I have watched both boys develop over the last 4 years. Please tell me that you are not implying that either of them does not deserve to be there?
The boys didn’t pick themselves. Both are hard working, dedicated boys and if they make the final cut will do the RBW proud. Who their parents are is of no consequence. I think it’s wrong to name them negatively like this.
Going the Glenwood route are College- academic time off for a mid term rugby tour! The names of the ever influential Old boys sons in ***and *** are indeed a surprise but hey, if you have influence you have influence! They can now live the dream they’ve waited for for the past 5 years.
I’ve added the touring squad. A few boys still missing due to the cricket playoff match this Friday and a few out with injuries as well.
@Pinotage: Thanks, even though Im kicking a little slower than last year.Have a blessed 2015. Hoe lyk die vooruitsigte vir 2015 daar in Bloem ? Hoe doen jou rammetjie? Mos sy eerste jaar “ope”, nie waar nie?@beet: Thanks Beet. I shall suspend all the plans we had to burn schools in KZN and the EC.(Dale was on top of the list)
@rugbyfan: Looking forward to that read as always.
@beet: I have sent you my yearly summary on the ECape schools please put it up. Did not get to all the schools this year was a bit tied up.
@BOG: @Pinotage: Well the good news is I now have the Bloemfontein schools and Griffons fixtures as well the Kynoch Northern Cape (Noord-Kaap) fixtures. So now it’s just Diamantveld on the wishlist and there should be a FSG button in the sidebar by Monday
@BOG: I will post the Griffons scores. More particularly Bethlehem and others in the region. Glad to see you are still kicking!
@kosie: @Playa: Ironically, the only tie I have with the FS, is GCB. I dont even have a distant cousin there. Maybe an old school girlfriend who has been married a few times, but thats not going to help me with rugby scores- other scores maybe (I wish – Im at the stage where Im like a fox terrier chasing a bus. If I catch it, I would not know what to do with it) But why should the FS be dealt with differently? Perhaps if we burn a few schools (in KZN and E/Cape) Beet will listen to us. Surely Beet, it cannot be that difficult to find a source? One each in Welkom/Betlehem, Kimberley and Bloem.
Thanks Beet
@beejman: I think returning regulars from the 1st XV 2014 are the prop, wing and fullback/utility. There is a squad listed here:
http://blog.schoolboyrugby.co.za/?p=10115
Next week we’ll have a much better idea of who will make their starting lineup.
Does anyone have an idea what the college team is like this year? How many 1st team players returning?
@kosie: Hahahaha! WOW! I wonder how the name ‘Dick’ came about?
@Playa: A piece of useless info. Dick’s real names were Timothy Maxwell Delve Cocks known as Tim. He played 3 games for the Boks on the 1980 South American tour!
@beet: @BOG: Jokes. It’s hard to get Free State fixtures apart from Grey.
If you are able to source them, then please forward and I will post with pleasure. Others just accept it for what it is.
@BOG: All you need to know about the Free State fixtures here:
http://blog.schoolboyrugby.co.za/?p=10165
@Playa: You’re right with the name, poor fella. His brother was my maths teacher and even he received the odd remark which we cannot repeat on this blog!
It couldn’t have been easy growing up with a name such as Dick Cocks…eish
@BOG: There’s F/State-Griquas link above the schoolboy rugby blog logo at the top of the page. We hope we can find it there
@BOG: My first port of call would be the score board at the venue. If what they say is true that one can see 7 days in advance in the FS, then finding the score should not be difficult. On a more serious note, you have a good point.
I get my Griffon info from family but that is not the most reliable stream of info.
Looking forward to this. But where will we find the results? I see we can click on for the Fixtures/Results for W/Cape,N/Vaal, KZN and E/Cape, but no F/State- that “non-existent” region
