Maritzburg College Squad for tour of Northern Free State

Martizburg College will be going on a short tour to the land of the “Purple People Eaters” during March.

Their schedule consists of games against Voortrekker of Bethlehem (16h00 Thu 12 March) and Hentie Cilliers (10h00 Sat 14 March).

“Purple People Eaters” was a nickname given to the North Free State rugby team by former Natal captain Dick Cocks in his popular Natal Mercury column, Cocks and Bull. Northern Free State (now called the Griffons) played a role in keeping Natal (now called the Sharks) out of the Currie Cup Rugby A-Section during part of the 1980’s, a decade during which Maritzburg College rugby was at a peak and they were respect as one of the strongest rugby schools in the country.

College’s preseason includes warm-up matches against TBA opponents at the Voortrekker Night Series on successive Fridays, 27 February and  06 March.

@chopper: Bru – you’re going to have to get off this horse sooner or later, it’s called bias confirmation, basically if you look for something hard enough you will find it.

It’s not about the planning at all – the canoeing calendar is decided by the KZN Canoe Union because canoeing is not done on a nice piece of flat grass or astro where a first aid team pitches up and helps. Canoeing is on wild stretches of water miles from anywhere, the logistics of competing are much more difficult and safety has to be the first concern – the death on this years Dusi a stark case in point (where despite the best efforts made, people can die). Remember that canoeing is a year round sport, so it’s not the end of the season completely, just the discipline changes now, the river season ends this weekend, they move to flat water, slalom and sprints which not all boys are required to do. But this weekend they finish what they started, so I’m fine with that. Better than fine actually, it’s imperative, just as you said here —>

“I seem to remember watching a T20 game between College and DHS live on TV about 4 or 5 years ago (if my memory serves me correctly it was the franchise final to determine who would represent the Dolphins at the National Schools T20 finals) when the cricket team were missing 3 front line players who had been forced to attend 1st XV rugby practice by the then headmaster and his deputy who also happened to be the MIC Rugby at the time. I think it was Andy Capastagno who nearly swallowed his microphone when he interviewed the College captain who told him that the team had 3 enforced changes from the one that had won the local regional final……and that they were not injured but at a rugby practice!!!!! “.

Fish or fowl Mr Chopper? … or is it which ever way the wind blows at the time?. My son is fulfilling his obligations to canoeing. What makes that different to 4 or 5 years ago – or was that just bad planning as well?

Surely all summer sports finish on the same weekend. Sad that your boy has to miss out on the first hockey game. Sounds like some pretty poor fixture planning to me.

@Gungets Tuft: Tuftie, every game played is a friendly game…two halves of 35 minutes running time…..each and every Saturday. Agree that any defeat is not fatal although there would be some old boys who would disagree with you wholeheartedly about that because it’s rugby after all! Take it as fact, the season started last Thursday. The DHS encounter will be one sided again and then it’s Westville I see…..then Saints Festival with Grey PE(tough game) followed by two easy runs…St Albans, who are very average this year, and some development outfit! So in all a pretty decent run around at the start of the season, before some heavy traffic arrives. Enjoyed the gutsy Kearsney result over the Greenblooded, Grasshopping Umbiloburgers on Sat I have to say. Wasn’t surprised either about parental comments along lines of ” *****” go back to Selborne!” I wonder if and when the alleged HMA will be adhered to by the AUTHORITIES at the “Wood?” Isn’t that the lad who, according to sources within that establishment ” just arrived at the school gates one day?” And old Grasshopper seems to haver “never seen” some of the team that did duty against Kearsney. Lastly domyounhave any idea where the College vs Glenwood game is being played this year….is it confirmed for Growthpoint Kings Park?

@chopper: Don’t know about how they feel, pre-season friendlies are what they are, if they learned something they will have achieved what they set out to do. I don’t have as much at stake in College sport success or lack of it as you might imagine I do, my expectations of what the boys get out of the College experience is more turning out the whole man. A defeat or two is not fatal, might in fact prepare them better for life. But I’ve regurgitated that ad nauseum here so will just leave it there. The season starts next week against DHS. I will miss that, my boy involved in compulsory canoeing. He’s a hockey player but has to fulfill the responsibility to his primary summer sport first. It’s not all about rugby and hockey …

@Roger: Just saw your post now about Jeppe. Nope, only the highest regard for Jeppe, fine, proud school. You won’t find a College man, Old Boy, parent or player, taking any team for granted. It seems that Chopper might think that Jeppe are an easy victim but since we don’t know who he supports I can’t speak for him.

Remember that College chose the Jeppe festival rather than Wildeklawer (I think I’m right there) – that should say everything that needs be said about the relationship between the schools.

@Roger – When KES and PBHS play, one of the best features is the absence of sponsors logos on the kit. Take a walk through schools and have a look at the first team rugby pics – the transformation from kit without logos to kit with logos is scary.
How many traditional rugby schools don’t have logos? I can name the following:
KES, Pretoria Boys, Parktown Boys, St Johns, Bishops, Rondebosch, Wynberg and St Stithians. I am now sure about the Eastern Cape and Border schools but the number is really small.

@Ploegskaar: @BoishaaiPa: You could well be correct that quality of the teams from the WC are better than those from the North.

Only one school in the North publishes its historic results against all other schools, so I had a quick look and found the following:

Affies results v the A league Cape schools:

    Bishops: Played 3, won 3
Boland Landbou: Played 4, won 3 and lost 1
Paarl Boys: Played 19, won 12 and lost 7
Paarl Gim: Played 14, won 6, lost 7 and drew 1
Paul Roos Gim: Played 17, won 9, lost 7 and drew 1
Rondebosch: Played 4, won 1, lost 2 and drew 1
    SACS: Haven’t played
    Wynberg: Played 5, won 5

Those results aren’t too shabby from a poor quality team from the North.

@Roger: @bison: @Tang:Re Jeppe: the following must be considered:
    1. The current u18s are a relatively weak group by Jeppe’s new improved standards.
    2. The current u17s are an exceptionally strong group – last year’s u16 age group was almost certainly the best in Jeppe’s history.
    3. I’m not sure how many u19 players Jeppe has in the school. I know of one provincial player who is in the grade below his age, so I’m not sure how many more there are?
    4. Have Jeppe brought in any new players? I know that Jeppe brought in two new players in last years u16A team.

I’m pretty certain that Jeppe will have a good 1st team this year but points 3 and 4 above will determine whether they will be able to run with the big dogs (Affies, Monnas, etc). Remember how poorly Affies did (by their great standards) in 2014 due to a weak matric group. Affies g11s last year were very strong, but sometimes the younger players need time to adapt to open rugby.

unfortunately KES succumbed to the numbers on the jersey a few years back when the rugby started to be televised – a believe that was not negotiable from the broadcasters. Not sure how Bishops still get away with it …….

@Pedantic: Guma is U19 this year, nothing untoward, he hasn’t repeated a high school year, there is no Grade 11 repeat to justify a loophole in the HMA, so no similarity to past cases at all.

As for cricketers playing rugby, let’s all just check team sheets later in the year, but for now why not just keep it tidy and keep boys names out of it unless you’ve got something complementary to say.

@Gungets Tuft @ Rugger Fan – Always a great pleasure to have MC in Pretoria. An honest hard school boy contest with great respect between the schools.
I have attended over 10 of these and unfortunately don’t have many left.

As far as I know, every boy will have been at PBHS from grade 8. If they were not at PBHS in grade 8, they have moved to the school for a valid relocation reason. There is not one single boy on a rugby scholarship!

Look forward to seeing the Red, Black and White shortly. By the time the first fixture comes around on 2 May, each team will have had many significant fixtures behind them.

Will all the PBHS boys have been there since Grade 8??

@Tang: Let’s see who makes the team before I subject myself to the PT. But Guma arrived beginning of Grade 10 – if you missed that …. welcome to planet earth, enjoy, you will find we are a generous if slightly strange species.

    Munangi – Grade 9 I believe.

Other 2, not sure, but one grade 10, the other grade 11 I think, and if not mistaken the parents arrived from Zim, but I will accept correction from someone more in the know. I’m active here on the blog but my boy doesn’t even play rugby, I know some of the boys well because my son is mates with them, but I’m no Grassy in terms of my knowledge of the players and the teams. Sorry.

I’m pretty sure Beet has the skinny …

What is happening with the College / Grey match this year? I guess it will be at College this time round? It was great for ou Gin-n-Tonic and I to make your aquaintance at Grey last year and it would be good to see you in Maritzburra this year. I might even introduce you to ou Rugger-Fan who has also dusted off his whistle and will hopefully also be reffing a match or 3 when you guys tour.

@Roger – Very good point about Jeppe. They should be very good this year. I just wonder how they will handle the high levels of expectation being built up.
When PBHS played polo against Jeppe a few weeks back, there was lots of talk about how they plan on having a successful season.
I have seen many great u16 sides flop at open level and many poor u16 sides produce at open level.

@Gungets Tuft: Easy run at the Festivals Tuftie…….is your pick for skipper a loosie by any chance? And what boys are out for “other sport” – wasn’t the last summer sport fixture last Saturday? And didn’t see any 1st XV players in the 1st XI cricket team. Heard that last years 2nd XV had wisely hung up his boots if he is the cricketer being referred to. I see no Commons in the group- is he injured or retired?

@Gungets Tuft: @chopper: If you fellas think Jeppe is an easy game this year then good luck to you – their U16A side last year was ranked 2nd in the country after Monnas and they have a few returning from their very successful 2014 team. In my opinion – they will be the team to beat in the Northvaal this year along with Affies and Monnas.

@chopper: You named names, and you made it plain that their parents have influence (which implies that the first team coach and director of rugby are lackies of these Old Boys). It also implies that the boys have done nothing to justify their selection (“Old boys sons in ***and *** are indeed a surprise but hey, if you have influence you have influence”).

    Not buying it.

As for captaincy – not sure, just remmeber there are boys out for other sport and injury – my pick of captain is on that list, but the injury might be longer term so I’m going to stay silent on that.

Easy run – OK, if you say so. Glenwood, House, Affies, GCB, Grey PE, all top 10 possibilities.

@Gungets Tuft: Just an observation Tuftie-nothing negative at all! Am looking forward to seeing how the team performs. I see quite an easy run to they have with only Grey PE and possibly Jeppe as relatively stiff opposition in the Festival rugby they are playing this year. Pity the team aren’t up against the real SA school powerhouses like Paul Roos, the two Paarl powerhouses etc. Do you have any idea who the team will be skippered by? That could be an interesting choice in itself.

Neither *** or *** are a surprise to me, I have watched both boys develop over the last 4 years. Please tell me that you are not implying that either of them does not deserve to be there?

The boys didn’t pick themselves. Both are hard working, dedicated boys and if they make the final cut will do the RBW proud. Who their parents are is of no consequence. I think it’s wrong to name them negatively like this.

@kosie: @Playa: Ironically, the only tie I have with the FS, is GCB. I dont even have a distant cousin there. Maybe an old school girlfriend who has been married a few times, but thats not going to help me with rugby scores- other scores maybe  (I wish – Im at the stage where Im like a fox terrier chasing a bus. If I catch it, I would not know what to do with it) But why should the FS be dealt with differently? Perhaps if we burn a few schools (in KZN and E/Cape) Beet will listen to us. Surely Beet, it cannot be that difficult to find a source? One each in Welkom/Betlehem, Kimberley and Bloem.
