Posted on 24 Feb 2015 : Will anyone play Selborne? Selborne College has been left in a bit of a predicament. They don’t have opponents for the annual Border Schools Rugby Day – the traditional season starting festival. It’s believed that initially Selborne were meant to play against fellow East London high school Stirling. Stirling however declined the match-up. Border Rugby then paired Selborne with Hangklip from Queenstown. The unconfirmed news passed on about Hangklip is worrying, as it suggests that Hangklip are struggling to find enough players for a team this year and have therefore withdrawn from the Rugby Day. The latest news is that Pearson all the way from Port Elizabeth or Cambridge from East London may asked to be Selborne’s opponents. Other yet to be confirmed changes to the original fixture list below are that Queen’s of Queenstown will now play Grens from East London, while Dale from King William’s Town will meet Hudson Park of East London. (obviously this speculation was ended by the acceptance of the final fixtures listed above)
@QC 86: You are so friendly on this blog but intimidating in real life, Hudson Park were also gifted a try by the ref when that Hudson kid scored a try from an offside position! I also don’t like the arrogance Hudson Park pupils are always displaying!
@CHS08: How was that ref in our game Hudson in our 22 and grubber the ball thro,it hits the ref between the shoulder blades, bounces off him sharply and into the Hudson wings hands about 15m away,scores in the corner untouched,ref says no advantage play on WTF
@QC 86 and GCollege 86: Mr Venter I was sitting so close to you at the stands, but again I chickened out u were sitting with Mr Coetzer, couldn’t come say hello. All these statements are true. Congratulations to your sons for making the 1st team. Not to keen about driving to Grahamstown this weekend. I’m exhausted but I can’t miss the Graeme Rugby day. I hope all the Border schools bar Hudson Park do well.
@QC86: Although I could not go watch the game in Porterville the feedback I got was that the Framesby pack and backs were as huge…conditioning though not up to scratch and were only competitive for 10/15 minutes. No use in having a huge team but no stamina or skills…results will reflect that!
@BoishaaiPa: His mate Ronald Jiri was very good,big ball carrier,Dale backline very good,forwards like ours very unfit and slow.QC in for a long season,no12 centre very good,frontrow can’t scrum ,need help urgent,
Love the fullback from Dale’s first name!..
@CHS08: I am not sure why people are expecting so much from Selborne this year. Backline should be good but forwards are very slow around the park and not to skillful. Give Hudson their due, they are well drilled and always punch above their weight , that said the winning margin on Saturday was the biggest it has been for a couple of years
@CHS08: Lots of work this week. No excuses but the team was very unsettled this week with sudden withdraws. The fly half was the 3rd choice.
Very disappointed with the Selborne performance from yesterday! Some dodgy defending. Brits and Tiaan were outstanding though. Selem was my pick of the forwards. Hope they improve because there are some really tough fixtures coming up. Starting with Brandwag next weekend.
@beet:
Cambridge 39 – 0 Zweliyandila
Stirling 17-10 Maclear Academy
Selborne won 43-22
Dale won 40 odd 0 and selb22-10 at ht
Dale up 26-0 just after half time v port rex
@QC86 Thanks seems like a close 2nd half how do you rate QC this year
QC win 19-0 v grens
@spilly: Qc up 12-0 AT halftime v grens
Thanks will lookout for the Selborne supporters next weekend best of luck to the team and parents looking forward to those scores
@spilly: they should all be back by next week, will post you some scores today cheers
@QC86 THanks for the info congrats on Grant as CAptian for today how long will Morgsn be out was looking forward too seeing him will be at Greame day visiting all the way from Aus hope Koyana ant Boloko back
@spilly: they all In the mix.Morgan and Taki Boloko are injured, Konana had to go see his father that was badly injured in a car accident
Surprised not to see Morgan Steyn Koyana and Boloko not in the Selborne squad any news on there availability
@Queenian: Especially after what happened last year
@Playa: Lets just make sure they get past Grens tomorrow first. Ye the one QC lock is a giant but sometime those boys don’t have the heart to go with it, actual thought this boy had left school already, maybe a “allar Noord Kaap move” by QC
@rugbyfan: Yep! I have been reliably told that QC have quite a big pack this year…and so do Dale, it seems. Yebo Tanks Selborne could have some competition upfront for a change
@Queenian: That ’97 team was monstrous! I remember seeing little Nick Eyre being dragged by into numerous rucks with the use of finger nails (he was very nippy around the fringes). The backs were blitz and skilful. That team was just complete. The best QC side I have ever witnessed.
@Playa: Maybe this is going to be like 97 were everybody was expecting a weak small QC team and “on walked the giants” remember watching them play Grey PE that year they were enormous.
@rugbyfan: Thanks yes I did confirm with QC the Smith boy is back playing rugby so that’s good.
@Queenian: @Playa: Went past QC on Tuesday and ye was very surprised to see some very big boys at the QC practice did not see them 3 weeks ago when I was there, so not sure if JD has been hiding them somewhere, this could be a very interesting year.
@Queenian: And you will be happy to know saw the Under16A practicing and Ilano Smith was there and is playing rugby this year so I think the Under16 age group in the Eastern Cape is going to be very tight between Grey/Selborne and QC
@QC86: Thanks.
Beet ,the fixture’s all been played at Selborne College.
@Queenian: not a chance! Hennie is a Dalian through and through…born and bred!
@BOG: There are. I made an error in my maths calculation…number 3 Reezwaan Shahadat.
Still missing a soutie
@Playa: Did not catch his name. He was in Qtn on Wednesday, when Maclear played Hangklip in a friendly.
@Playa: Thanks for the spelling lesson. No more Indians in the EC? It will be good to have a Reddy on the wing or prop- his breath after a curry dinner the night before, should have the desired impact on the opposition
Queen’s squad named and listed above
@Playa: Now that’s a “Rainbow Nation” for you.
Nobody can say that Dale have not embraced the new South Africa you sure that boertjie did not escape from Bog’s old school JJS.
@QC86: NCNCNCNCNCNC
@QC86:
@Playa: i did know you were going to put your foot right in the maths trap.
@Playa: only you can write that and not be called a racist,just had a long chuckle
@Queenian: My maths counts: 13 Xhosas, 2 Zulu, 2 coloureds, 2 Zimbos, 1 Sotho and 1 Boertjie…we’re just a soutie away from being the most representative team in the country, wouldn’t you say? Certainly represents the demographics of the EC more than any other within a 54km radius from King
@BOG: Cumakala!
@QC86:
Reading through the Dale team sheet i might have to change their name to the Zim Leopards,with Ronald and Godknows??? Don’t we have any Xhosas in Dale. jees
Go “Thumaka”!! My place of birth. @Playa: Help out with the correct spelling here.
@Andre: @Playa: Yeah now I’m interested to see how Maclear perform against Stirling
@Andre: Who’s their coach?
Watch Maclear Academy, that coach knows what he’s doing.
@beet: You might want to re-work your write up as well. I’m sorry, but this is how things are done by those in charge in Frontier Country…they will inconvenience you to pits
@GCollege86: Thank you I have updated the fixtures.
@beet: Check your emails. I sent you the final fixture list for Border Schools Day
@Playa: Agree with you about QC I think everybody is under rating them when I was there 2 weeks ago I got the impression that John Duncan has everything under control and quite cagy about what is happening.
Although I don’t expect them to be great I expect them to be a lot better than most people are thinking. Even got the impression when at Grey PE the other day that they believe QC are not a threat to them this year but we had herd that one before.
Although I think that 2016/2017 will be good years for QC
Queens are playing Grens
@Playa: Exactly what BoishaaiPa says is their logic. They already had some boys playing for BCD last year. Will see the Border Rep who told me last year on Friday night and will give feedback.
@Playa: Dale vs Port Rex …I am now anxitious to see the rest of the fixtures on that BSR list
@beet: Just received a text that Dale will now be playing Port Rex at BSR Day.
@BoishaaiPa: Why the Border CD team plays in the CW and not the AW in the first place is a mystery to me. Secondly, they will become a one school team…and as a bonus, they will meet the PDI requirements (purely on merit) quite comfortably with just QC as a team, and still be competitive. Something Grey will envy *running away from BOG*
As for WP. That question has baffled me for some time. maybe they just enjoy sitting on a fat bank balance. There is absolutely no practicality in having one WP side a CW.
@Playa: They somehow have to justify the inclusion of a Border CD team at CW and incorporating an old traditional like Queens will give it some substance. What baffles me is a big union like WP that says it can only a afford one team at CW, but yet Border ,Griquas and EP have 2 teams there and they are not the most cash rich provinces I know of!.
@GCollege86: But what sense is in that decision? Has there been any confirmation of this?
Hey guys, if anyone has the finalised Border Rugby Day fixtures, please post it or email to me.
Thanks.
@rugbyfan:
Yes, unfortunately this is true. Weird decisions were made by Hangklips very young coach, like playing absolute novices at prop instead of an experienced 140kg tighthead that squats 240kg.
@rugbyfan: There was also talk late last year that Queens will fall under Border Country Districts and not Border for Provincial selections this year. I will try and find out the latest.
@rugbyfan: Some of the Queens boys moved from Hangklip to Queens in the last two years. They also lost some boys to Grens in East London. Hangklip also only have 8 fixtures this year.
@Andre: There was talk of Hangklip boys wanting to play for Queens, which sounds weird not sure if there is any truth in it.
It looks like Queens are playing Grens and not Hudson
Hangklip versus Selborne would probably not be in the Klippies’ best interest, as it would be a very uneven match up.
Hangklips young coach, and this is only my own personal opinion, has been making some questionable decisions that probably does not count in their favour either.
Gents who is exactly playing who at Border schools?
@GCollege86: Any update on the fixtures? Does BRU have a confirmed list?
@Playa: Agree 100%
Marlow is usually a tough match-up for most schools.
@GCollege86: I recommend that in future, they look at going as far out as the EP schools: Graeme, and I am sure the likes of Union, Marlow, Cradock, and if distance is not a problem, maybe even the Uitenhage schools, in Muir and Dan Pienaar would love to take part. But ja…the BRU is a different beast for sure.
Just heard now that Selborne will be playing Hudson at Border Schools so I expect a reshuffle of most of the fixtures. Border Schools will take place at Selborne College. But who knows, everything might change again tomorrow.
@Knight_CHS07: Agree 100% with you. The problem with Border Schools day is that 24 teams has been invited or indicated that they will be attending the day. They try and match teams up that don’t play each other during the year or only once during the year. For the last few years, Grens has been playing Queens and they see it as a sort of a derby because all their other teams usually play Queens on the same day. Hudson also usually plays Dale on this day and Selborne plays Stirling.
This year we have a bit of a spanner in the works with Stirling not willing to play Selborne and now Hangklip also not willing to play Selborne. By the sounds of it there might not even be 24 attending the day. I believe Grens is now playing Queens and Hudson playing Dale as it use to be. If Pearson doesn’t play Selborne on the day, I believe and hope it might be Cambridge against Selborne on the day.
The solution to this problem is easy……..lets match up Dale and Selborne so that we can put them into their place early on in the season ;)
I wonder why Hudson Park is considered “superior” to CHS in rugby . If they are so superior then I think they should play Selborne and CHS play Dale.
I was disgusted by the refering of the Selborne vs Hudson derby last year. I think BRU should match up Selborne and Hudson, and the CHS can play DALE.
That’s really worrying about Hangklip
@Veg: Maclear is an entity of a bigger group of academies which include KWT, Alice, Queenstown, EL, Mthatha and Butterworth. It’s a SARU-BRU initiative funded by the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport, University of Fort Hare’s Human Movement Studies Research Department, and the Eastern Cape Sport, Arts and Culture. There are also a few corporates involved, like Twizza.
@akw: I believe they have the majority of last year’s team returning this year, so they should be a competitive outfit again.
How strong is Grens going to be this year?
Do any of you Guys know much about the Maclear Academy.Was in Maclear the other day and saw a sign for it.Is it based at the Maclear School?
I seem to think it is a Department of Sports funded thing.Hopefully the BRU has nothing to do with it.
@Playa:
@Knight_CHS07: Just be happy you’re gonna start the season off on a winning note. Would you like to swop opposition with Dale?
Port Rex may come second best against Zweliyanda. Well that’s if last year should be taken as an indication.
Interesting fixture list…we are playing Tsholomnqa
