Posted on 24 Feb 2015 : Will anyone play Selborne? Selborne College has been left in a bit of a predicament. They don’t have opponents for the annual Border Schools Rugby Day – the traditional season starting festival. It’s believed that initially Selborne were meant to play against fellow East London high school Stirling. Stirling however declined the match-up. Border Rugby then paired Selborne with Hangklip from Queenstown. The unconfirmed news passed on about Hangklip is worrying, as it suggests that Hangklip are struggling to find enough players for a team this year and have therefore withdrawn from the Rugby Day. The latest news is that Pearson all the way from Port Elizabeth or Cambridge from East London may asked to be Selborne’s opponents. Other yet to be confirmed changes to the original fixture list below are that Queen’s of Queenstown will now play Grens from East London, while Dale from King William’s Town will meet Hudson Park of East London. (obviously this speculation was ended by the acceptance of the final fixtures listed above)

@QC 86: You are so friendly on this blog but intimidating in real life, Hudson Park were also gifted a try by the ref when that Hudson kid scored a try from an offside position! I also don’t like the arrogance Hudson Park pupils are always displaying!

@QC 86 and GCollege 86: Mr Venter I was sitting so close to you at the stands, but again I chickened out u were sitting with Mr Coetzer, couldn’t come say hello. All these statements are true. Congratulations to your sons for making the 1st team. Not to keen about driving to Grahamstown this weekend. I’m exhausted but I can’t miss the Graeme Rugby day. I hope all the Border schools bar Hudson Park do well.

@QC86: Although I could not go watch the game in Porterville the feedback I got was that the Framesby pack and backs were as huge…conditioning though not up to scratch and were only competitive for 10/15 minutes. No use in having a huge team but no stamina or skills…results will reflect that!

@CHS08: I am not sure why people are expecting so much from Selborne this year. Backline should be good but forwards are very slow around the park and not to skillful. Give Hudson their due, they are well drilled and always punch above their weight , that said the winning margin on Saturday was the biggest it has been for a couple of years

Very disappointed with the Selborne performance from yesterday! Some dodgy defending. Brits and Tiaan were outstanding though. Selem was my pick of the forwards. Hope they improve because there are some really tough fixtures coming up. Starting with Brandwag next weekend.

@Queenian: That ’97 team was monstrous! I remember seeing little Nick Eyre being dragged by into numerous rucks with the use of finger nails (he was very nippy around the fringes). The backs were blitz and skilful. That team was just complete. The best QC side I have ever witnessed.

@Queenian: And you will be happy to know saw the Under16A practicing and Ilano Smith was there and is playing rugby this year so I think the Under16 age group in the Eastern Cape is going to be very tight between Grey/Selborne and QC

Although I don’t expect them to be great I expect them to be a lot better than most people are thinking. Even got the impression when at Grey PE the other day that they believe QC are not a threat to them this year but we had herd that one before.

Although I think that 2016/2017 will be good years for QC

@BoishaaiPa: Why the Border CD team plays in the CW and not the AW in the first place is a mystery to me. Secondly, they will become a one school team…and as a bonus, they will meet the PDI requirements (purely on merit) quite comfortably with just QC as a team, and still be competitive. Something Grey will envy *running away from BOG*

As for WP. That question has baffled me for some time. maybe they just enjoy sitting on a fat bank balance. There is absolutely no practicality in having one WP side a CW.

@Playa: They somehow have to justify the inclusion of a Border CD team at CW and incorporating an old traditional like Queens will give it some substance. What baffles me is a big union like WP that says it can only a afford one team at CW, but yet Border ,Griquas and EP have 2 teams there and they are not the most cash rich provinces I know of!.

Hangklip versus Selborne would probably not be in the Klippies’ best interest, as it would be a very uneven match up.

Hangklips young coach, and this is only my own personal opinion, has been making some questionable decisions that probably does not count in their favour either.

But ja…the BRU is a different beast for sure.

@Knight_CHS07: Agree 100% with you. The problem with Border Schools day is that 24 teams has been invited or indicated that they will be attending the day. They try and match teams up that don’t play each other during the year or only once during the year. For the last few years, Grens has been playing Queens and they see it as a sort of a derby because all their other teams usually play Queens on the same day. Hudson also usually plays Dale on this day and Selborne plays Stirling.
This year we have a bit of a spanner in the works with Stirling not willing to play Selborne and now Hangklip also not willing to play Selborne. By the sounds of it there might not even be 24 attending the day. I believe Grens is now playing Queens and Hudson playing Dale as it use to be. If Pearson doesn’t play Selborne on the day, I believe and hope it might be Cambridge against Selborne on the day.

I wonder why Hudson Park is considered “superior” to CHS in rugby  . If they are so superior then I think they should play Selborne and CHS play Dale.

I was disgusted by the refering of the Selborne vs Hudson derby last year. I think BRU should match up Selborne and Hudson, and the CHS can play DALE.

@Veg: Maclear is an entity of a bigger group of academies which include KWT, Alice, Queenstown, EL, Mthatha and Butterworth. It’s a SARU-BRU initiative funded by the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport, University of Fort Hare’s Human Movement Studies Research Department, and the Eastern Cape Sport, Arts and Culture. There are also a few corporates involved, like Twizza.

@akw: I believe they have the majority of last year’s team returning this year, so they should be a competitive outfit again.

Do any of you Guys know much about the Maclear Academy. Was in Maclear the other day and saw a sign for it.Is it based at the Maclear School?
I seem to think it is a Department of Sports funded thing.Hopefully the BRU has nothing to do with it.

@Knight_CHS07: Just be happy you’re gonna start the season off on a winning note. Would you like to swop opposition with Dale?
Port Rex may come second best against Zweliyanda. Well that’s if last year should be taken as an indication.
