Kearsney beats Glenwood 26-25

17 March, 2013 beet 65

Supporters got to witness schoolboy rugby at it’s very best in a thrilling match won 26-25 by Kearsney against Glenwood. The match had been billed as one of the biggest games of the KwaZulu-Natal season and it lived up to expectations in every way with the lead changing hands before the winning try was scored by Kearsney virtually at the death.…

11 March, 2013 beet 30

09-Mar-13. Kearsney illustrated the importance of teamwork and a balanced approach as they systematically built up a 30-0 lead over 70-minutes against their hosts Northwood. George Campbell beats St Charles 10-7

10 March, 2013 beet 0

09-Mar-13. Hosts George Campbell scraped home 10-7 against St Charles in a new fixture. It’s excellent that the two schools are competing again because past indications suggested that they are more or less on par in rugby. This match proved it. A very even contest just as the scoreline suggests with both teams enjoying periods of domination. …

1st KZN Top Schools Rugby Festival a success

7 March, 2013 beet 34
TIME SCHOOL SCHOOL
16h30 Port Natal 17 14 Pionier
17h20 George Campbell 8 3 Clifton
18h10 Northwood 8 3 DHS
19h00 Kearsney 17 5 Westville
19h50 Glenwood 19 0 M.College

Congratulations must go to the KZNRU for putting on a successful and very entertaining festival at Kings Park. It was well attended and the boys lived up to the billing by playing attractive early season rugby. It seems pointless over-analysing the results because of the format (2 halves of 20 minutes) and the differing motives of the various coaches coming into the games.…

Glenwood beats Framesby 26-24

3 March, 2013 beet 71

02-Mar-13. Glenwood and Framesby treated early arriving fans at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban to the only real excitement at the venue on the day. With the main game, a Super Rugby match between the Sharks and the Stormers turning out to be a dull affair, the 50-points aggregate score in the schoolboy rugby curtain raiser proved to be an advert of how rugby is meant to be played from a tactical point of view. In the end Glenwood won 26-24 after leading 12-9 at the break.…

Kearsney ready to kick start the year 2013

21 February, 2013 beet 9

Kearsney will head into their first major contact session of 2013 without a number of their stalwarts. Just like Tier 1 opponents College and Westville, the overlap of the rugby pre-season with the summer sports calendar has resulted in a number of first choice players  not being made available for these warm-up games. This along with injuries sees Kearsney travel to the Voortrekker Rugby Night Series in Pietermaritzburg for a match against locals College without the likes of their SA Schools duo of Dan and JL du Preez, highly rated Ayron Schramm, playmaker Tyler Smith, the ever-reliable decision-maker Tristan Tedder and strongly-built Guy Francis.…

15 February, 2013 beet 72

It’s still early days and Westville like all other schools competing at this time of the year are using game time as part of their preparations for the regular season. Damelin Night Series: Port Natal beats Northwood 8-7

13 February, 2013 beet 8

With Northwood’s first assignments of the KZN Tier-1 season being March dates with Kearsney on their lush green Reece-Edwards pitch in Durban North followed by Michaelhouse up at the Meadows in Balgowan, they might well have been tipped to cause an early season upset or possibly even two.  The six pre-season games at the Damelin Night Series provides an excellent lead up to these two regular season games against opponents who are expected to have had less match practice and should therefore be a little cold coming into those Northwood games. …

KZN Tier-2 suffers under new SARU age-banding

10 February, 2013 beet 127

One of the first questions that came up when the new SARU age-band rules were implemented was what effect will it have on the smaller schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The ruling which comes into effect this year prohibits all under-16 players from playing in under-19 (open age-group) games, something that was allowed up until the end of the 2012 season. Many of the KZN Tier-2 schools do not field an under-16 age group. Players go directly from under-15 to the open age-group. …

Damelin Night Series: Northwood edges out George Campbell

6 February, 2013 beet 74

Northwood had to come from 6-0 down at half time to edge out George Campbell 10-6 in the first major clash of this year’s Damelin Night Series at Port Natal. The match may not have been everyone’s cup of tea due to the number of unforced errors committed but in the context of it still being the first week of February and just the second competitive game of the season for both teams following relatively easy first round matches last week, the match provided good spectator entertainment and an opportunity to gather a lot of meaningful intel on the teams.…

All eyes on Northwood at the Night Series

31 January, 2013 beet 28

Northwood is bound to draw the most attention from neutrals in attendance when the Damelin Night Series kicks off at Port Natal on 01 February 2013. The Durban North school would have stated their campaign to win back the floodlit rugby title they last held in 2011 as the clear-cut favourites, following months of hard work put in to assemble a team capable of challenging the very best that KwaZulu-Natal schoolboy rugby has to offer once the season proper starts in March.…

Northwood ready to wrestle the mantle away from Michaelhouse

24 January, 2013 beet 20

How Michaelhouse will fare during the 2013 season remains a bit of an enigma. Those that have followed the progress of the team will know they have the right ingredients for a meaty pack of forwards. Their power in the forwards should be most obvious come scrum-time. Here they could prove to be very hard to contain.…

Glenwood, Westville & DHS make front page news

21 January, 2013 beet 93

Months after the initial Glenwood/Westville rugby fallout was blogged here on Schoolboyrugby.co.za, it has made the front page of a local KZN morning paper. Although it is not a new story, for many not close to school rugby in the province it will come as a huge shock to find out that two of KZN’s biggest schools don’t have any first term fixtures against each other on the cards as well as no rugby match in 2013.…
