Hosts Northwood has beaten Hilton College for the first time since their outstanding first team led Michael Alison won 12-6 back in 1991.

This was a match of two halves. The first half belonged to Hilton, who played the far more constructive game in the opening 35-minutes and enjoyed territorial advantage. However they could not translate this into a lead on the scoreboard and changed ends at 7-11 down. Under the floodlights, Northwood upped their game considerably in the second half.…

The 133rd meeting between Glenwood and DHS, saw hosts Glenwood winning 38-13, meaning they improve to 54 wins versus DHS’s 68, with 11 draws since the first game in 1922.

During this match, DHS did ever so well to keep the score at 0-0 for the first 33 minutes but after that the floodgates opened and Glenwood scored 6 tries in 29 minutes before DHS got a consolation try.…

This weekend Northwood School will host Hilton College on their beautiful fields in Durban North. Northwood is one of those schools that really knows how to make home field advantage count. They can usually be worth up to 10 points on home soil but given the high they are currently on having recorded wins by scoring over 30 points per game during their last two home matches against Gauteng English Medium Schools Jeppe and Parktown; that figure might have to be bumped up even more. …

A comment last week by Hilty before the Hilton-Michaelhouse derby about the two captains Jayson Gouws (Penzance, Hilton) and Thomas Walker (DPHS, MHS) both being the 2009 KZN under-13 Craven Week flanks, prompted this research on what had happened to Thomas Walker’s teammates from the DPHS 2009 team.…

The match against St Charles was played on Stott field in Botha’s Hill on a day of ideal conditions. St Charles had a strong physical pack which was assertive at line-outs and scrums. They werehighly competitive and impressive at the breakdown and managed to break the Kearsney momentum at times.…

Amongst the things one comes to expect from a Hilton-Michaelhouse derby are a packed ground, wonderful atmosphere and arguably the best pre-game “Spell” show in the whole of South Africa. With all the above boxes ticked, the good weather also added to this occasion at Balgowan, creating an almost perfect setting that was made complete by the 1st XV players of both private schools producing an absorbing game that held everyone’s attention from the first kick-off right through to the final whistle.…

Gilfillan Field in Hilton which must rate amongst the best school rugby venues in the country, played host to an entertaining 1st XV game. Visitors Kearsney won 31-17 after dominating the scoring in the second half. In many respects, the teams were very evenly matched…

After tripping over the Port Natal hurdle a few days earlier, DHS made the perfect recovery and cleared the potentially tricky George Campbell obstacle with easy during a home midweek night game on Van Heerden’s field. Maritzburg College took on Northwood on Goldstones on Human Rights Day, Friday 21 March 2014.

If the sign of a good team is being able win when not at their best, then College’s rather impressive 31-6 score-line against Northwood puts them on a level above good because the Red, Black, White attack scored four tries while struggling for much of the game to get into the higher gears. …
